31  Entertainment / Computer Hardware and Software / Re: Another great extension by FireFox on: August 30, 2007, 12:44:54 PM
I'm caught in two minds about this extension and for that reason do not use it. I can understand all the reasons such as helping if your on dial up, viruses and trojans (although most good Anti virus programs should neutralize this threat). But i can also see the other side of the coin and how these adverts keep websites going.

I am going to use Christians Unite just as an example....I would guess that the reason CU use's adverts is because of revenue and it helps to keep CU going. But just imagine if everyone used a adblock piece of software. The companies paying to place adverts on CU would soon realize and would eventually decide it doesn't pay to place there adverts on here. An important revenue for CU suddenly dries up and after a while, how would this effect a website like this? Would it be able to carry on without the revenue it receives from adverts. Probably not.

No one here thinks that the U.S. is more important than anyone else.

Thank you for saying that pastor roger. I can completely understand where David is coming from after being on other forums. I am glad to hear that CU isn't the same.
33  Entertainment / Computer Hardware and Software / Re: Windows XP to be retired in 2008 on: April 17, 2007, 06:15:48 AM
Price aside, as we all know the price of an O/S is scandalous, you will find that in a number of years, most people will be using Vista without any problems. What is happening now is exactly what happened a few years back when Microsoft introduced Windows XP and gradually withdrew Windows 98. Everyone was up in arms about XP and how useless it was and yet now, most people love XP. And i can count myself among these. When i switched from 98 to XP, i hated it. It was the most confusing thing i came across. But now i cannot imagine using anything else....But i know my next machine will have Vista on it and unless i plan on using another system like an Apple or Linux, i have no choice....But i'm sure, give it another year or two, when all the bugs have been ironed out, i will enjoy Vista as much as i like XP now.
34  Entertainment / Computer Hardware and Software / Windows XP to be retired in 2008 on: April 15, 2007, 03:37:26 PM
Windows XP will stop being available on new PCs from the end of January 2008.

Microsoft is keeping to a plan to stop selling the operating system even though surveys show a lukewarm response to Windows Vista among consumers.

A poll by US market research firm Harris Interactive found that only 10% of those questioned were planning to upgrade to Vista in the near future.

All versions of XP, including those made for media centre or tablet PCs, are affected by the decision.

System shock

Microsoft has confirmed that from 31 January 2008 large PC makers, such as Dell, HP and Toshiba, will no longer be able to buy licences for the software so they can install it on new machines.

Windows XP is being retired to make way for Windows Vista, the consumer editions of which were launched in Europe on 30 January.

However, a poll released in early April suggests that Vista has yet to win over significant numbers of potential customers.

35  Entertainment / Computer Hardware and Software / Re: Firefox 2.0.0.2 on: April 15, 2007, 03:34:23 PM
Joey this is weird if I use IE I can see the animations, if I use Mozilla I can't. I am going to have my husband look at it and fix it for me. He's an IT and I know he's going to tell me I don't need both browsers ...yada yady yada yada... so I haven't said anything to him yet.  Grin Roll Eyes Shocked

Sorry i didn't see this sooner. If your still having probs, try this. Open Firefox and go to tools menu > options > content > load images automatically > exceptions (button) and see if you've accidentally told Firefox not to load images from christian unite and if so, remove the site from the list > okay and reload the page and see if it helps.... Its so easy to accidentally block images on a web site.

I'll do some research on that. In the meantime maybe someone else on here knows of a good free one.

Unless you have a problem with your registry, i would recommend you leave it well alone, unless you know what you are doing. Just one mistake and it will mess your whole system up. There really is not any need to clean the registry as it makes no difference to the running of your PC.

Ever since I downloaded firefox 2.0.0.2 I can't see any of the animations here in the forum. Any suggestions?

41  Entertainment / Computer Hardware and Software / How secure is your browser? on: April 01, 2007, 03:21:06 PM
I know many here are now using a more secure browser than IE, such as Firefox, Seamonkey or Opera. But just how secure is your browser. If you haven't got it set up correctly, you'll be just as open to exploits as if using I.E and you may just as well continue to use I.E. Here's a good little test for your browser. Mine passed all tests, thanks to the settings i have.
