Never heard of Sambo's   Sad    sounds like a great place though

It used to be a big restaurant chain that had 1200 units from 1957 to somewhere around 1969. The theme came from a children's story book called "Little Black Sambo". Their specialty was pancakes even though they did serve other things. The grandson of one of the prior owners is trying to reopen the chain now.

In 1977 they had a total of 1500 Restruants. I have over 800 different wooden nickels, from Sambo's to this day. I also have other odds and ends, from Sambo's.

They must have good butter.

Has anyone read Little Black Sambo, where the little African boy tricks a tiger into chasing him around a tree? And then the little boy sneaks away from the tree, and the tiger is just chasing himself, round and round, so fast that he turns into butter. Then the little boy takes some of the butter home to his mama and it is the best butter they've ever had.

Sorry that was a typo. I meant 1980's. There is now a Sambo's in Santa Barbara area where the first original one was. It was opened up by one of the grandsons.

I don't have one anymore but I did read it while eating some Sambo's pancakes.

That store was never closed, as it wasn't Incorporated into the chain. The only time it has been closed is for remodeling. I've been to that restruant several times. Including back in 1983, when all the other Sambo's were closed. The address is  216 West Cabrillo Street.
