Title: All of us, who remember.....
Post by: Shammu on January 27, 2006, 05:26:15 AM
This is to all of us who are old enough to remember and to the youngsters who didn't get to live and enjoy the good old days !

Congratulations--From me to you

TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED the 1930's, 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's !!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they carried us.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing and didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, our baby cribs were covered with bright colored lead-based paints.  We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking. As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat.  We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a water bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle, and NO ONE  actually died from this. ;D  We ate cupcakes, bread and butter and drank soda pop with sugar in it, but we weren't overweight because WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING! We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.   No one was able to reach us all day.  And we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.  We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 99 channels on cable, no video tape movies, no surround sound, no cell phones, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat rooms..........

WE HAD FRIENDS . . . we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.

We made up games with sticks and tennis balls and ate worms and although we were told it would happen, we did not put out any eyes, nor did the worms live in us forever.  We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them!

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment.

Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL!

And YOU are one of them!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids. That is before the government regulated our lives for our own good. :'(

Does anyone remember your parents getting a couple of loads of topsoil for the lawn when you were a kid?

Keep in mind that this was just a pile of plain old dirt. This was like an invitation for every kid in the neighborhood. How many things could a bunch of kids do with a pile of dirt and how long did it take? I'll give you a few ideas and see if you remember:

King of the mountain.
Roads up the mountain.
Forts with plastic soldiers.
Caves.
Streams and rivers.
Bridges and other structures from Popsicle sticks.
Wet mud molded structures.
Last but not least - mud-ball fights.

 ;D

Oh yeah! I loved it when it was dumped! And I hated when they took that wonderful hill and spread it out to grow grass!
You could make the coolest roadways for Matchbox cars!

ROFl... ok like minded here SH... matchbox cars,, they were my all time favorite toy when i was young,, and LOVED making roads and toens and all hehe.. my poor mom would buy me barbies and all but guess i took after my big bro and rathered the cars!

I loved king of the castle and all that, see, here, in the freezing cold winters of Canada.. we looked forward to the HUGE snow "mountains" from when the driveways were plowed to play aot of them games with snow instead of mud (mud was fun to tho hehe), alot of my memories of that kind of thing are about going down over huge hills of snow on our crazy carpets and of course almost always going off course and landing head first into the snow of the little side cliffs!!wearing myself totally out trying to get back up that hill so that i could fly down it once again!ahh the memories  ;) ;D

Yeah they would spread the soil out and grow grass. The fun was gone and the work began with a motorless push mower.

We had a city lot across the street though that still had dirt piles year round. Snow piles in the winter even when there wasn't much snow it was fun sliding on the snow covered dirt piles.

I see that nobody else mentioned mud-ball fights, so maybe you were too intellectual for that.  ;D

YES, I remember the old manual mowers. I also remember asking dad to let me try it and him telling me that I was too little. What I didn't know is that I would be guaranteed a chance to use it often when I did get big enough.  ;D

OK - here's a few more to remember:

Tether-ball
Tops
Duncan Yo-Yo

We had an old crab apple tree. I would have been killed for using the apples that way. My parents didn't believe in waste and used everything for some useful purpose.

Yeah our crab apples were real sour, too. The only thing I got to do with them was to collect them and help can them into candied apple rings and candied apple bits. What we didn't put up in the basement  would then get sold. Now there were some laying on the ground that had rotted too much to use. I do remember throwing one of them at my older brother. I think that was when I learned how to run really fast.

You'll wonder where the yellow went when you brush your teeth with Pepsodent.

Here's another way to learn how to run long and hard, but only if you can keep from laughing:

Your older brother is in a steaming, hot shower getting ready for his Saturday night date. Little brother sneaks in with a 5 gallon bucket full of ice water, stands on a stool, and dumps the entire 5 gallon bucket over the shower curtain. OH! - I forgot - AND THEN RUNS COMPLETELY OUT OF THE HOUSE AND DOWN THE BLOCK!

LOL.....   I wasn't quite as bold. I just turned the hot water off at the hot water heater. That gave me at least another 50 ft lead on them.

I'm sure glad to know that I wasn't the only mean little kid while growing up. However, I must add that I was on the receiving end many times from my brothers.

That was me, the recieving end. I think my actions was more a matter of survival, it was fight back or get tromped. I was #5 in 8 kids. With Four of the older ones being brothers I got picked on quite a bit.

I remember throwing an old empty purse of my mothers at my oldest brother in response to him picking on me. I didn't mean for it to hurt him but there was a metal closer on top that hit him in the face. I ran barefooted down a freshly layed white gravel driveway to get away from him. It's funny how fear removes all sensation of pain.

ohh mean little boys hehe.. ok here goes one that i was a victim(hehe) of

i had a aunt and unclethat had alot of kids LOL and when they and my parent went out for the evening.. the older kids looked after the younger.. well i was part of the younger.. so one night the older guys decided to scare the bejeebers outta me.. so they lived in an old scarey farm house that alot of creepy things happened in and most of them were the older kids doing lol. anways.. they got one of the boys to stand in the living room (at night , pitch black, and i mean cant see your hand BLACK)
anyways got one to stand at the far corner of that room and then one of them put me on his shoulders and told me this horrifying story of this meant man that loved to eat little girls.. and while telling me this.. walked me on his shoulders toward this DARK room.. well when we got about half way in, the guy that was in the far corner turned on this flashlight under a horrfying halloween mask.. and then they told me he was the meat man.. and that they were taking me to him for his night time snack.. well needless to say it scared me so bad i can rmemeber every detail.. they got into a little trouble lol but that only stopped them till the next time! soo i was bad and mischievious little girl.. but i got it back twice as bad LOL

Beat that one LOL

Thats about the worst thing I did, when I was young. Except putting 55 gallons of concentrated  liquid soap in the City Hall fountain, back in 1975. ;D

Dreamweaver, are there any other "EXCEPTS"?   ;D   ;D

That would be enough soap bubbles to cover several city blocks, and it would have definitely cleaned that fountain. Did you send the city a bill for services rendered, or did you simply consider it a civic duty?   ;D

That actually happened in a city near us a few months back!  :D
The city was MAD and my husband and I drove by and just laughed!  :D
And we snickered every time the news reports tried to make it sound so terrible!  :D

WAIT! Was that you, Pastor Roger?  :o

It was my civic duty, in front of city hall was always dirty. So two friends and myself cleaned it up. ;D

Nope there are no other excepts after that.

Something good and something bad at the same time.

My younger brother had a bed wetting problem when he was younger. One of my older brothers teased him mercilessly. My older brother was a heavy sleeper so one night I took some warm water and stuck his hand in it. It worked. He never teased my younger brother again. Instead he started helping him out.

How about pie tin frisbees before the frisbees were even made.

Making a night light with fireflys and a canning jar. Then camping out in a homemade tent made with old blankets drapped over the clothes line.

DreamWeaver said: I would flush the toilet on the bathroom.....

Wow! You had a bathroom to flush lol!
I remember the two hole out house. A sears roebuck catalog beside one of the holes :-[

In the summer time we didn't get any shoes, that was for winter time only, and (school).
In the summer it was pig party time! In other words us younguns had to round up the older pigs, run them through a shoot to be loaded up on a truck to be sold.
It was messy but boy was it fun, we would feast on ice cold watermelon and didn't care how sticky our elbows got from it!
If we had grits for breakfast and there was some left over, you knew what was for snack, baked grits pudding! Don't ask me how to make that, I never got the recipe! I'm not sure if I'd want it.
If we were outside got a cut or a scrape we didn't run to Ma crying, we would fill the wound full of dirt and go on doing what we were doing.
We had one television station; CBS, and I ate more dirt than I care to remember.
We would catch junebugs tie strings around them and fly them till they died!
That was fun!
We had china berry wars with sling shots; OUCH!
We would play outside from daylight to just about dark. We would jump out of the loft of the barn on huge mounds of hay. We didn't care if it was used or not, we were having fun!

We also had to work!

Even the youngest of us had stuff to do. If it was to pick up the house they had to do it. We worked in the cotton fields too. We had vegetables like butterbeans, peas, squash, corn, tomatoes, and whatever else you can think of that had to be gotten in and prepared.
In the autumn it was time to run chichens, we would put them in the freezers for winter.
We never lacked for anything! And we never got sick, no had ear infections or any of the other ailments prevalent today with our grand kids. We were very healthy.

The good old days... Things were a lot less complicated, a lot more fun! You knew who your neighbors were and you could trust them.
Sunday after church we would go visiting! The front porch was the place to be if you were an adult.
If you were a kid, you'd best not be hanging around the adults, you'd better be in the yard playing but where they could watch you. It was great!
I wished it was like that again...

Hello Anyah,

Ah YES, the gold old days. Thanks, I really enjoyed your post.

I was just reflecting on the times and how they have changed. It's really pretty shocking to compare 50 years ago with today. I'll simply say that things were simple, clean, and moral 50 years ago. I would happily go back to those times.

Love In Christ,
Tom

Galatians 4:4-6 NASB  But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba! Father!"

Hello Anyah, I can remember on my grandfathers farm (dairy,) milking cows, picking corn, strawberries (some how I never had much, when I got back, ;D )  I also remember the outhouse, outside of the barn. I also remember the poison ivy............ :o

His farm is also where I learned how to drive, at 9 years old. In a 1949 International stakebed truck, no brakes. I also drove the tractor, durning harvest, pulling the wagon, fo hay, alafa, and corn feed. :P

Yes things were simpler in the mid-sixtys.

When I was little my mom used to baby sit the neighbor's kids. I remember going down to the creek and catching frogs, turtles, snakes and fish.  We would come home and fill up the kiddy pool with the animals that we caught.  My mom would be mad but it was fun. ;D  I also would catch bugs and put them on a string, they were flying grasshoppers.  June bugs scared me.  They get in your hair and stuff. Yuck.  We had a field by my house and we made bicycle jumps, that was fun but is also how I broke my wrist.

What about forts?  No one I think said anything about forts.  I remember one time we wanted to make a fort in this bush but there was a nest of hornets that lived in the ground.  It was my bright idea to make a soap water solution to pour into the hole.  We designated John to go and pour it on the bees.  He poured it down the hole and all the sudden a swarm of angry bees were chasing him.  Boy could that kid run fast!

Other things I remember growing up:

Wild strawberry picking

Neighborhood praides (we would all dress up and praide around the neighborhood waving an American flag) My mom has a picture of that some where.

Ice-skating on a near by pond.  Scott once pushed me down and I fell through the ice.  It was only knee high water. I went home freezing and wet. :(

We also used to go one nature walks in the woods.  Thank goodness I never found poison ivy.

See?  I was born in 1985 and growing up we still knew how to have fun :)

What sweet memories you all have!

And they gave me pause to be thankful that my kids are now being raised in the country where they, too, will have many of the same types of memories!

 :D

Well, with some modern additions like indoor plumbing and triple antibiotic creams.  ;D

I bet he ran fast, LOL! My grandparents lived in the Appalachian country, and we moved there to take care of grandma. It was great, woods and creeks and hilly fields. My sister and I made forts with branches and rocks, with moss for carpets, as well as bridges and paths...

How did I miss this thread?
DW I agree with everything you said, but you forgot to mention that if we got caught doing something wrong even if it was just a neighbor, the neighbor would grab us by the ear and take us straight home to mom, mom would spank, and then tell dad and he would spank too. It never killed us.

We had an old crab apple tree. I would have been killed for using the apples that way. My parents didn't believe in waste and used everything for some useful purpose.

I don't mind showing my age, it just means that I have survived longer.

The town I grew up in was so small that everyone knew everyone. There was no getting away with anything no matter where a person may go. If I did something wrong my parents would be sure to get a phone call, then everyone in town knew because we had party lines back then and no phone call was private.

The town I grew up in is only 1 square mile, so everyone was related in one way or another, you know like 3 degree separation?

anyways, I remember when westen union would deliver messages to the door, there was nothing scarier than having the western union man knock on the door in the middle of the night.

I'm sorry to hear that sister. I will be praying for you.

Actually I do pretty good with my cane so the squirrel can keep the walker.

We may end up "legally blind" but there are others that have 30/30 vision that are fully blind. Praise God that we can see and hear.

That was called a "rumble seat" and it came in the old Ford Roadsters in 1929 through 1932 I think. Yes it was a popular car to be restored or souped up in the 50's. That car can really move if a 302 is dropped under the hood.  ;D ;D Some of them were soft top convertibles so you probably could still stand up in them.  ;) ;D ;D

That was called a "rumble seat" and it came in the old Ford Roadsters in 1929 through 1932 I think. Yes it was a popular car to be restored or souped up in the 50's. That car can really move if a 302 is dropped under the hood.  ;D ;D Some of them were soft top convertibles so you probably could still stand up in them.  ;) ;D ;D

nah you're going back way too far. The car I'm talking about was a sedan, not convertible and the little jump seats were inside the car there was a big space between the back seat and the front seart and inbetween there was this little round stool that would pop out as an extra seat. The car mut've been an early 50's model. Possibly a Buick or a Pontiac.

It sounds more like a Cadilac. My uncle had his own Cadilac transmission shop and owned somewhere around 20 caddies from 1949 to 1958. I remember a couple of those cars seemed to fit the discription you are giving. If it was a Buick or Pontiac it would have to have been a pretty unique model where not many were made.

I was just a little girl (yes! believe it or not I was young once),  ;D
so It may have been a Cadillac, I just remember I loved sitting in that little seat and when I got tired of sitting I would stand up.

I did find an old Merc' on the internet that had a jumpseat but I don't think it was original equipment.

I believe in 1954 or 1955 they started putting rear facing jump seats in some of the station wagons of domestic cars .... Buick, Pontiac, Ford, etc .....

YES, I remember the old party lines, and I also remember that kids weren't allowed to use them. Phones were for adults who had important business. Our entire telephone number was 3 digits, and I can't remember how many families used the same phone line.

AND, someone had to remind me about the homemade sling-shot. If you guessed anything about a broken window and someone getting into trouble, you guessed right.  ;D

Someone also mentioned forts. YES, we had a good one, and we had mud-ball fights with the neighbors. I found all kinds of ways to get into trouble, and it seemed that I always got caught. I learned to just plead guilty and throw myself on the mercy of the court.  :D

Dreamweaver,

Brother, I really never had a single thought about becoming a police officer until I saw a job opening notice one day. I still feel like I was led to become a police officer, and I don't regret the decision at all.

I certainly wasn't any little angel while growing up. Maybe the experience of being caught helped me to learn how to be a catcher.  :D

My brothers would plan things out when I was younger but wouldn't let me in on the plans. As a result I ended up being the fall guy. As I got older I got wise to that and would see their plans working and would get clear away from them and would get an alibi, sitting with my mother. I ended spending a lot of time with my mother.  ;D ;D ;D

When I was in Jr high 8th grade.  I beat up the school bully, for picking on my brother. He was a senior, at that time. He out weighed me by a good 75-100 pounds, and was about 5ft 10 inches.  ;D  But thats about what I weighed at that time, except, add maybe 10 pounds. I was on the swim team, swimming butterfly.

I used to tattletale on my brothers, but I also fought a lot of fights for them, yes a girl fighting boys, how about that. To this day my brothers look at me and wonder how such a small framed and petite person could have been so fierce. I am only 5'1" now and I nver weighed more that 93 pounds, but I DID some heavy duty fighting for my brothers.
Yea, I tattled on my brother for the first time when I found out one of them and his friends were playing 'chicken' on the railroads, after that it was a piece of cake, all I had to do was hear that one of my brothers was doing anything out of line and after I beat them up, I went and told my dad. They used to call me the 'stick cop' cause I would carry a stick and I would hide it behind my back (and because I was skinny as a stick)  ;D  and when I cought them doing wrong I would whack em and then I would go and tell my dad. They turned out to be very self respecting and responsible men though, all of them served in the military and only 1 of them was ever arrested and that was for DUI. And they "all" still respect me, even my nieces and nephews used to call me the seargent when I went to visit they would hide cause I would make them field day their rooms. ;D ;D (their mom was dying of cancer).

PR, these are my step daughters, and they had a lot of emotional problems when they came to live with me 7 years ago, at the time my husband was not a Christian and he absolutely did not want me to correct them, spank them, or punish them in any way. Today he is trying hard to correct the problem he created for himself and me, but it's not very easy. I think he was that way at the begining because he had never taken any active part in their life before then. But their childhood was very disturbing before they came to me. Now they feel like they don't need to listen to me because they have dad. This caused a lot of problems in my marriage too, but  thank God that now my husband is saved and he cees his mistakes and is trying to correct them. He still doesn't let me correct them, because as he puts it he is looking out for my health. Needless to say I'm still praying abouth that.

AMEN SISTER MARIA!

I like the way you expressed that. That's just one reason why real beauty is in the heart. I do like to daydream from time to time about what our glorified bodies might be like. I certainly wouldn't debate it, but I keep thinking they might be like LIGHT. There are some Biblical reasons for this thought, but it's mainly just a pleasant thought about eternity with JESUS.

Love In Christ,
Tom

Matthew 5:11 NASB  "Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me.

Brother Tom

Hello Dreamweaver,

Brother, please keep me in mind as you progress with your study. I would be very interested. I just made some guesses based on pretty vague Scripture... "fashioned like unto His Glorious Body." Several beautiful portions of Scripture refer to JESUS as LIGHT. I'm thinking right now especially of a portion in Revelation regarding no need for the sun because of the LIGHT OF JESUS. I know this isn't anything concrete, but it's at least a beautiful thought. AND, obviously we wouldn't have the brightness of JESUS.

Love In Christ,
Tom

1 Thessalonians 5:8-10 NASB  But since we are of the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet, the hope of salvation. For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with Him.

Title: Re: All of us, who remember.....
Post by: Soldier4Christ on March 14, 2006, 10:02:12 PM
I haven't done a thorough study on this myself but from what I remeber on this I would think our bodies would be similar to what we have but more perfect just by looking at the fact that we were created in His image. Could that be in the form of light though .....  possibly so.

Brother Tom

That is something I am working on, what our glorified bodies might be like.

We will have eternity to work on that, one thing you can be absolutely certain of is they will be perfect. Not capable of growing old, or feeling pain. But right now we have to take the best care we can of the ones we have here and now, because God gave them to us for a purpose.

There is a store at the mall near here that sells coffee beans, all flavors they are not to make coffee with they are to eat. They tastes so good. Especially the chocolate covered ones.

Sister Maria,

I was just kidding, but I like coffee enough to try just about anything. I also like the smell of coffee, brewed or otherwise. I've only tried the really fancy coffee a couple of times. I just can't see paying $5 for a cup of coffee, but some stores charge more than that and they are doing big business.

Love In Christ,
Tom

Romans 5:17-18 NASB  For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.  So then as through one transgression there resulted condemnation to all men, even so through one act of righteousness there resulted justification of life to all men.

lol .....  I used to go to the coffee shops in the malls that would give out samples. Their samples usually consisted of a small ounce cup of coffee. I would usually ask them instead for just one bean of a certain type. They would be more than generous in doing so and sometimes would give me one bean of quite a few different types. I would pop the bean in my mouth whole and walk around the mall with quite a buzz.

I had to give them up though. The coffee beans that way were too much for my old ticker.

Sister, I don't usually do that either, and I did feel pretty silly in spending that much for a cup of coffee. Curiosity just got the better of me, and I had to find out how that famous chain sells all that coffee for such outrageous prices. My answer was that I don't know how they do it. BUT, I was silly enough to try a different flavor some time later, thinking that I might have just ordered a type that wasn't very good. They got me.  :D

DW, you're not missing a thing, like BEP's said a coffee shop is where they sell you  'BRAND' name coffee for $5.00 a cup, and a mall is where you will find the coffee shop where you can buy the coffee to make yourself feel better after spending your paycheck and topping off your credit cards  ;D  ;D
(Well not you but a lot of people)

Title: Re: All of us, who remember.....

My only reason for going to the mall was that was where the only book store in town was. Otherwise it was all too expensive and anything else I wanted could be gotten for less elsewhere.

Am I the only one who likes "those" kind?  :o

It's a real treat to me when we go somewhere new and I get a cup of "brat" coffee!  ;D I've tried all kinds all over the southern states! And I liked most all of them!  :P

And I even get coffee beans for gifts! I won't normally pay the extra for the flavored beans - just a cup once in awhile. But I got an old-fashioned coffee grinder (crank, not electric), so I love to get new flavors of coffee beans!  :-*

But in the mornings - I like need the plain ole kind.  ;D

Nope. I like a few of them but I go to the local Grocer (kroger) for them not the mall, there cheaper. But that is a rare event. Most of the time I just get regular Folgers and add the flavoring. MOCHA!

Has anyone else noticed that Folgers is now trying to keep up and they are coming out with all diferrent kinds of grinds and flavors also? It is getting ridiculus.

One of the reasons, I don't buy Wally world coffee.

If there is a Publix nearby try their coffee it's the same as Folgers

Big supermarket chain in the southeast.

I kinda figured that. We have a Kroger, a County Market, Schnuck's, Aldi's and a Sav-A-Lot but Wal Mart's Super Store is still the cheapest.

We light up!

Rev. 22:5 ...because the Lord God shall illumine them, and they shall reign forever.

The city is "illumined" too (24:23).

God dwells with Man in His orchard of delight. Wherever God dwells, there are bright things, which take their "illumination" from God; shining angels, seraphim like copper fire, Moses whose face was so brilliant that it terrified the Israelites. God is the "Father of Lights". Stephen's face, when he beheld a vision of Christ standing in Heaven, "shone like the face of an angel"; but we will have more than a vision, because Jesus Himself will be there to "speak plainly of the Father" when there are no more riddles and all secrets are judged.

"When we've been there ten thousand years, bright shining as the sun, we've no less days to sing God's praise than when we'd first begun"

:D

Sister, I don't usually do that either, and I did feel pretty silly in spending that much for a cup of coffee. Curiosity just got the better of me, and I had to find out how that famous chain sells all that coffee for such outrageous prices. My answer was that I don't know how they do it. BUT, I was silly enough to try a different flavor some time later, thinking that I might have just ordered a type that wasn't very good. They got me.  :D
Well, I think you've discovered how they do it.  ;D

Hello Willowbirch,

Sister, thanks for the beautiful thoughts about JESUS. I do like to daydream about what HE might look like and how things will be for eternity. These are very pleasant thoughts to think about often as we run our course here in this short life.

:D  And, thanks for telling me about my discovery on the expensive coffee. Now I feel like an explorer and wonder if I should record this for posterity.

Love In Christ,
Tom

For those that remember the times before modern conviences:

 Outhouse

I remember when I was a kid,
We were the poorest folk in town.
And we had a wooden outhouse,
You could smell for blocks around.

I remember in the summer,
How the aroma burned your eyes--
And how that old two holer
Would collect a million flies

And I remember in the winter
When it was nine below,
How I used to sit down easy
On that cold and icy hole.

And there was poor Aunt Millie
After she had sipped some cider.
Was bitten in the outhouse
By a darned black widow spider.

Well, she came running in the house
And it gave us such a scare.
And where that spider bit her at--
She wouldn't tell us where.

But ma took her in the bedroom
And called old Doctor Brown.
It seemed to me at least two weeks
Before she could sit down.

Then there was cousin Ollie,
Who came here from the city.
Oh the smartness that old Ollie had
Well it was such a pity.

He came running in the house--
And he began to blush.
He said I used the outhouse
But I can't get it to flush.

Well, I got the best of Ollie
And I'd do it every time.
I said we don't use water
All us rich folk all use lime.

Old Ollie took some lime home
After he had spent his hitch.
So the folks there in the city
Would think that he was rich.

Well lightning struck the outhouse
On a cold and stormy night.
And the folks there in the city
Thought that it was alright.

Well, it burned throughout the evening,
Until the break of day.
When the neighbors found the cranny gone--
They cheered for blocks away!

Well, the church built us an outhouse--
The kind that goes inside.
And when I sit upon that throne--
It fills my heart with pride.

I think of all those winters
The smell and all those flies.
And the bliss that I have sitting there--
Brings teardrops to my eyes.

Now Pa's got into money--
Throughout his later years--
So now we all use Charmin
Instead of books from Sears.

It used to be a big restaurant chain that had 1200 units from 1957 to somewhere around 1969. The theme came from a children's story book called "Little Black Sambo". Their specialty was pancakes even though they did serve other things. The grandson of one of the prior owners is trying to reopen the chain now.

In 1977 they had a total of 1500 Restruants. I have over 800 different wooden nickels, from Sambo's to this day. I also have other odds and ends, from Sambo's.

They must have good butter.

Has anyone read Little Black Sambo, where the little African boy tricks a tiger into chasing him around a tree? And then the little boy sneaks away from the tree, and the tiger is just chasing himself, round and round, so fast that he turns into butter. Then the little boy takes some of the butter home to his mama and it is the best butter they've ever had.

Sorry that was a typo. I meant 1980's. There is now a Sambo's in Santa Barbara area where the first original one was. It was opened up by one of the grandsons.

That store was never closed, as it wasn't Incorporated into the chain. The only time it has been closed is for remodeling. I've been to that restruant several times. Including back in 1983, when all the other Sambo's were closed. The address is  216 West Cabrillo Street.

I was born in 1963 before computers, gameboys, video games, and many of the other things our kids play with yet me and my friends managed to have a fun childhood imagine that. Remember "Etch A Sketch", "Slinky", "Hula Hoops", and Duncan YoYos, Old Maid, and Lego's. Remember when it was just "Barbie and Ken" and a few clothes before all the dreamhouses and accessories came out. Remember when you gathered with your buddies for a Wiffle ball game on Sat afternoon. Or had fun acting out a book that you had just read. My friends and I had great fun pretending to be pirates after we read Treasure Island.  ;D Oh and who could forget Double Dutch plain simple jump rope fun and trying to see what kind of stunts you could do while jumping. ;D ;D My list could go on and on my point is we didn't have the technology but we still had loads of fun. Maybe we had to stretch our imaginations with some of the toys but it kept us busy and we were never bored. ;D

You're a youngster then, Rev. I was born right after the 2nd WW ended. In fact I still remember the air raid sirens, when we were kids and we had drill we all had to go to the basement of our school and crouch, covering our heads and chest. I remember, thinking "I want my mommy".

As for Barbie, I remember when there was no Ken  ;D

Well,
I'm not so old school, but I grew up in the late 70's early 80's and there still wasn't all the video things that there is now.  However, my childhood was great! Saturday morning cartoons were everything!!!  I grew up in an apartment complex and there was always tons of kids to play with.  Our biggest joy was "kick the can," which is a version of hide and go seek, stick ball was a must in the evening.  We also played in the woods a lot, but that just gave me poison ivy...LOL!  Nothing to help the itch besides some kind of yellow detergent soap my mom use to buy!  The only video game system that came out then was ATARI, but that was for the rich people in the neighborhood.....LOL! Yes, I still have quiet an imagination that stems from my childhood.  ;D

The time for us that do to show them.  ;) ;D ;D

Definitely time for our generation to show the younger generations, to steer them in the right paths, guide them in light of God's Word, and teach them how good our God is. We must remember these are the ones who will be teaching the following generations. When I was growing up we played outside till mom called us in or dad 'whistled', then we had dinner, showers and family time. Family time, that is almost non existant now a days, but we really can't blame the young one we have to blame ourselves for slacking up on what we were thought.

 ;D  Great Thread!

The ultimate toys:

Mud puddles.

Water - including the bath tub.

Snow.

Trees - GREAT if you had a tree house.

Plain old dirt.

Searching for a 4-leaf clover.

Running to the end of the block - thinking that you can actually stand beneath the end of a rainbow.

Identifying stars and groups of stars.

A jar to keep various bugs in.

Catching lightning bugs for your jar and keeping them until mom and dad told you to let them go.

Taps for a pair of shoes that mom and dad would never allow you to wear to school or church.

Getting a brand new pair of Keds or Buster Browns.

Getting your first crystal radio kit (Heathkit) with the cool and private ear-piece. If you were really cool about it, you could listen to it at night and not get caught.

Communications experiments with empty cans and strings.

Collecting baseball cards with a bonus of chewing gum.

A whole nickel burning a whole in your pocket.

OK, let's see if anyone remembers:

You go to the drug store and ask for a tiny bottle of real, liquid cinnamon. You soak tooth-picks in the cinnamon at least overnight and you have a really cool tooth-pick that releases a pretty strong cinnamon flavor for hours. The little cinnamon bottle is a little bit taller than the average tooth-pick, and you can soak about 20 at a time. The longer you soaked it, the stronger the cinnamon taste was. Some of them got so strong that they would burn your lips.   :o

Or carbolic salve. The best all around salve for skin problems such as sores, burns, cuts ......

In a brand new container of it the salve would be a light tan almost an orange in color. Once opened it would start turning dark in color. Eventually it would turn black. The black colored salve was the best and strongest.

That almost sounds like AD Ointment.

Post by: Soldier4Christ on August 09, 2006, 12:06:07 AM
Nope. Not at all like AD ointment. It is a whole lot better and stinks a whole lot worse.

It has been known for relieving athlete's foot, ringworm, toe itch, golf itch and other fungus skin irritations; also aids in removing soft corns and calluses. It was also used as a "drawing salve". If you had a splinter, thorn or piece of glass imbedded in you it would aid in drawing them back out.

Sounded like that stuff cured all most everything.

I know just what you are referring to PR, it's a black stinky ointment that draws out not just splinters and things like that, but even poison. I was bitten by a spider (don't know what kind) on my thumb once and after an hour or so my arm was swollen and started looking real bad, then you could see where the poison was spreading all the way up my arm by looking at the veins in my arm, anyways I had no health insurance at the time and a neighbor bought over her ointment and put some on the bite, in less than 8 hours my arm was back to normal

Tell me the name of it again so I can try to buy it, might have to go to a mom and pop type of pharmacy to find it though.

There are various different manufacturer names it goes under. I believe Watkins or Raliegh are the most common ones but what ever the brand name it is still known as carbolic salve. I remember finding it in a Stuckeys gas market along I-40 in 1987. It can also be purchased through various internet stores.

I never heard of soaking the toothpicks in the cinnamon, but I did buy cinnamon flavored toothpicks.  I believe they have mint now as well.  My Mom use to yell at us when we had them cause she always thought we would choke on em! :o

Here is one I remember as a kid that my Dad said worked for him to cure poison ivy, so he would use it on me when I played in the woods and would get covered with the stuff!
Fels Naptha Soap

Yep I remember that well, right along with Lysol and boric acid. If I stepped on a nail or something and had it imbeeded in my foot my mother would use concentrated liquid Lysol in a pan of really hot water as a soak. It would pull all the peices of sock and show leather out and disinfect the wound. It would also dry the wound from the inside out.

;D   OK - I remember the cinnamon tooth-picks like it was yesterday, so you guys must have been in the TWILIGHT ZONE during the 50s. Nearly every drugstore sold cinnamon oil. If they didn't where you lived you must have been in a different dimension - possibly somewhere near the OUTER LIMITS of the TWILIGHT ZONE.   ;D

Eekkk!! To much of a graphic image.  Made me cringe.  I think that is because I remember the time that me sister steped on a nail.  I never could figure out why but no matter how hurt she used to get she could still run all the way home.  Like there was even one time that she fell out of a tree, scraped her side and fractured her foot and she still ran home.

Or hair that grows under or in the nose. The Vicks went not only on the chest but under the nose and in a special well in a vaporizer. I would rather the Vicks in the vaporizer though than some of the stuff that she used to use in it. There was some dark brown stuff she used to put in the vaporizer that stunk so bad I would gag from it. It would start out a liquid and then turn to a paste as the vaporizer worked.

There is a restored old west town near Sutters Mill in Calif that still serves it on tap. I used to get it at a Soda Shoppe in my hometown and couldn't find it any where for years after they closed the shoppe. While in the Navy I visited that old west toen and couldn't believe they had it.

I still would prefer the Vicks treatment rather than the older kerosene treatment. Before Vicks kerosene was rubbed on the chest or a rag was soaked in it and the rag was then tied around the throat.

I remember when my mother finally decided to start using Vicks instead. I actuall jumped for joy.

OK - Let me try again with an old drink called a "phosphate" (sp). Again, many of the old drugstores had a soda fountain area and phosphates came in many flavors. The phosphate was on tap, and they put the flavor you chose in last. Most of the flavors were fruit flavors, and my favorite was cherry. This was something really special because most of the people just didn't have the money to buy fancy stuff like this.   ;D  Now, you can all tell me that you've never heard of anything like this.

By the way, I still think that Vick's Vapor Rub works. AND, I don't care if cod liver oil and castor oil work or not - I'm not taking it!   ;D

Title: Re: All of us, who remember.....
Post by: Soldier4Christ on August 10, 2006, 06:18:21 PM
Yeah .... that was the first soda's on tap. They didn't have a fancy machine to mix the sodas for them so they had to do it manually. As you said, the phosphate ( phosphoric acid }, the carbonated part of the drink, would be served from the tap and the flavors added manually. The soda shoppe I hung out in as a teen still had equipment from the 30's and 40's in it and that is how they did their sodas. The also served Ne-Hi and Coca Cola in the bottle but they cost a bit more.

I figured it was time to add to this.....................   :o :o :o

Do you remember when...............

All the girls had ugly gym uniforms

It took five minutes for the TV warm up?

Nearly everyone's Mom was at home when the kids got home from school?

Nobody owned a purebred dog?

When a quarter was a decent allowance?

You'd reach into a muddy gutter for a penny?

Your Mom wore nylons that came in two pieces?

All your male teachers wore neckties and female teachers had their hair done every day and wore high heels?

You got your windshield cleaned, oil checked, and gas pumped, without asking, all for free, every time? And you didn't pay for air? And, you got trading stamps to boot?

Laundry detergent had free glasses, dishes or towels hidden inside the box?

It was considered a great privilege to be taken out to dinner at a real restaurant with your parents?

They threatened to keep kids back a grade if they failed. . . and they did?

When a 57 Chevy was everyone's dream car...to cruise, peel out, lay rubber or watch submarine races, and people went steady?

No one ever asked where the car keys were because they were always in the car, in the ignition, and the doors were never locked?

Lying on your back in the grass with your friends?
and saying things like, 'That cloud looks like a... '?

Playing baseball with no adults to help kids with the rules of the game?

Stuff from the store came without safety caps and hermetic seals because no one had yet tried to poison a perfect stranger?

And with all our progress, don't you just wish, just once, you could slip back in time and savor the slower pace? Share it with the children of today.

When being sent to the principal's office was nothing compared to the fate that awaited the student at home?

Basically we were in fear for our lives, but it wasn't because of drive-by shootings, drugs, gangs, etc. Our parents and grandparents were a much bigger threat! But we survived because their love was greater than the threat.

Send this on to someone who can still remember Nancy Drew , the Hardy?
Boys, Laurel and Hardy, Howdy Dowdy and the Peanut Gallery, the Lone Ranger, The Shadow Knows,Nellie Bell , Roy and Dale , Trigger and Buttermilk.

As well as summers filled with bike rides, baseball games, Hula Hoops, bowling and visits to the pool, and eating Kool-Aid powder with sugar.

Didn't that feel good, just to go back and say, 'Yeah, I remember that'?

I am sharing this with you today because it ended with a double dog dare to post it. To remember what a double dog dare is, read on. And remember that the perfect age is somewhere between old enough to know better and too young to care.

How many of these do you remember?
Candy cigarettes

Wax Coke-shaped bottles with colored sugar water inside.

Soda pop machines that dispensed glass bottles.

Coffee shops with tableside jukeboxes.

Blackjack, Clove and Teaberry chewing gum.

Home milk delivery in glass bottles with cardboard stoppers.

Newsreels before the movie.

P.F. Fliers.

Telephone numbers with a word prefix...( Raymond 4-601). Party lines.

Peashooters.

Howdy Dowdy.

Hi-Fi's & 45 RPM records.

78 RPM records!

Green Stamps.

Mimeograph paper.

The Fort Apache Play Set.

Do you remember a time when...

Decisions were made by going 'eeny-meeny-miney-moe'?

Mistakes were corrected by simply exclaiming, 'Do Over!'?

'Race issue' meant arguing about who ran the fastest?

Catching the fireflies could happily occupy an entire evening?

It wasn't odd to have two or three 'Best Friends'?

The worst thing you could catch from the opposite sex was 'cooties'?

Having a weapon in school meant being caught with a slingshot?

Saturday morning cartoons weren't 30-minute commercials for action figures?

'Oly-oly-oxen-free' made perfect sense?

Spinning around, getting dizzy, and falling down was cause for giggles?

The worst embarrassment was being picked last for a team?

War was a card game?

Baseball cards in the spokes transformed any bike into a motorcycle?

Taking drugs meant orange-flavored chewable aspirin?

Water balloons were the ultimate weapon?

If you can remember most or all of these, then you have lived!!!!!!!

I remember those kind of phone numbers. In fact we had an old crank type phone and a party line that included the majority of the town. There is no way that I could remember it. I even have trouble remembering the one I've got now.   :P :P :P

YES - I remember those times with fondness and many times wish that we could go back in time. It was definitely a time of greater morals and innocence. Things were pretty uncomplicated.

Quote
Lying on your back in the grass with your friends?
and saying things like, 'That cloud looks like a... '?

YES, I remember doing this many times. It was really an awesome thing gazing into the sky, looking at the stars at night, and KNOWING WHO MADE IT ALL. I also remember saving for a long time and buying a small telescope. The world that can't be seen with the naked eye is just as interesting, so I eventually saved enough to also buy a small microscope. Things like this were fascinating.

Did anyone else spend some time in looking for a four-leaf clover? YES - I did.  ;)

I remember all the rest of it too. By the way, I got in trouble with the water-balloons.

We also had that party line, and we knew ahead of time when someone might need it worse than we did. We knew all of our neighbors, when they were sick, when someone was about to have a baby, etc., etc. By the way,  (E) for Elgin - 2305.

We all had chores to do for mom, and I had my first part-time job at the age of 8. Discipline was heavy, and I needed every bit of it.   ;D

THANKS for a nice trip down memory lane!

More to remember...........

Metal ice cubes trays with levers

Mimeograph paper

Beanie and Cecil

Roller-skate keys

Cork pop guns

Drive ins

Studebakers

Washtub wringers

The Fuller Brush Man

Tinkertoys

Erector Sets

The Fort Apache Play Set

Lincoln Logs

15 cent McDonald hamburgers

5 cent packs of baseball cards, with that awful pink slab of bubble gum

Decisions were made by going "eeny-meeny-miney-moe"?

Mistakes were corrected by simply exclaiming, "Do Over!"?

"Race issue" meant arguing about who ran the fastest?

Catching the fireflies could happily occupy an entire evening?

It wasn't odd to have two or three "Best Friends"?

The worst thing you could catch from the opposite sex was "cooties"?

Having a weapon in school meant being caught with a slingshot?

A foot of snow was a dream come true?

Saturday morning cartoons weren't 30-minute commercials for action figures?

"Oly-oly-oxen-free" made perfect sense?

Spinning around, getting dizzy, and falling down was cause for giggles?

The worst embarrassment was being picked last for a team?

Baseball cards in the spokes transformed any bike into a motorcycle?

Taking drugs meant orange-flavored chewable aspirin?

Water balloons were the ultimate weapon?

The National Anthem was played and we all stood, hands on our heart, as the curtains opened before the NewsReel and the first movie, The Three Stooges.  ;D

Tarzan, Jungle Jim, Tom Mix, Gene Autry, Wild Bill Hickok, Errol Flynn, The Lone Ranger, Sky King, The Invisible Man, Lon Chaney, Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff.

It was magic when Dad would "remove" his thumb.

Feeling the unrelenting love and warmth that comes from hugging a fuzzy puppy while it happily licks your face away...and all you can do is just laugh.

YES, Brother Bob, I remember them all quite well, but I go back a little bit further. We got in trouble for slingshots, so we used our imaginations on an arsenal of various weapons. Most of them were pretty innocent - like pea-shooters, clothes-pin launchers, spit-wads, rubber-bands, etc. It was fairly easy to get away with it if you could keep from laughing. YES - I got caught from laughing several times. I really had to stop because I rarely got anything done without being caught. I did have very strict parents and decided that I wanted to live.   ;D

Spit wads! Target ... clock front of room. The person furthest away from the bullseye got pelted with an onslaught of spit wads by all the others.   :D :D

I only used a pea shooter once. I almost didn't survive that one. I used my Dad's peas he had set aside for planting the next spring.  :-[ :P Besides that the school changed the straws to the kind that had the crinkles in them for bending them. They didn't make as good a pea shooter.

Did you ever experiment with partially melted butter in a straw. I did - it worked - I busted out laughing - and that was one of my last episodes with a pea-shooter. That did get the board of education applied to the seat of learning at school and again when I got home. The butter turned out to be a perfect shot - right between the eyes - and there's no way I could keep quiet and not laugh. OK - I was a mean little kid, but a little bit of partially melted butter never hurt anyone. I laughed when I got hit also, so it wasn't hard to catch me.

I never thought to use butter. My teachers never caught me. I had a reputation of being a book worm and I was able to control my laughing. No one ever ratted on me either.

Dreamweaver, are there any other "EXCEPTS"?   ;D   ;D

That would be enough soap bubbles to cover several city blocks, and it would have definitely cleaned that fountain. Did you send the city a bill for services rendered, or did you simply consider it a civic duty?   ;D

Yeah soap bubbles went out on the street until the sheriff office closed the intersection and got the water off.  ;D
