My son told me about this from his Navy days, and he said it was pretty wild. He also told me it was always rough going around the Cape of Africa. I can't remember the name of the club the Navy uses to signify that someone has gone around the Cape, but my son is a member. For whatever reason I don't understand, the harsh rolling seas never bothered him at all. I know that many people would get sick, including probably me. He also told us that many storms are incredibly beautiful to watch at sea. AND, obviously the sunrise and sunset show the MASTER'S work at sea with nothing to get in the way and ruin the beauty. I never got sea sick until I someone esle get sick. I think it was seeing them sick that bothered me the most. My problem always came when we got back in port. I would walk down the pier looking like a drunken Sailor until my equilibrium got reaccustomed to not being bounced around. I can't remember the club name for going around the cape either. I never went through there. I did get to join the Shellbacks and the Golden Shellbacks several times. A Shellback is a person that has crossed the equator and a Golden Shellback is one that has crossed the equator at the International Date Line. I've been across the equator while at sea 5 times and at the Date Line twice.

For some reason I always thought that it was a requirement. It's not a disgrace Brother, it's just that we are different

To pass bootcamp all I had to do was float on back half way around a very calm swimming pool. It took a lot for me to do that. I have a very hard time staying afloat and tend to sink like a rock. I only have 3/4th the lung capacity of most people. My left upper lung is shut off, genetic defect I got from my Dad. floating in a rough ocean for me is impossible as even in the swimming pool only my nose would barely be above water. it's just that we are different Most assuredly.

When I go to the pool I always stay in the 4 foot section, that way I know the water won't go over my shoulders.

I used to stay in the shallow end myself. I don't even go to a pool anymore. I don't think that I could climb back out of it.

It's no easy task for me either Brother, especially when I'm soaking wet, my husband usuall has to either boost me or pull me.
