I'll take the hurricanes I don't like surprises, if I know a hurricane is getting ready to hit us hard, we hit the road fast. My daughters too, they always say if more than a cat 1 we're gone. What i still haven't figured out is this; everyone got ready for Ernesto, they got generators, batteries, propane, flashlights, canned goods, lots and lots of water, and plywood, yet if we were to expect another hurricane next week, they would
all
go out and buy more, why can't they just save it for the next one? That's what I do, I checked all my batteries yesterday, I charged the ones that neede to be charged, I made lots of ice and kept it in the freezer...then all I needed to get was some canned and non perishable foods. We don't eat canned foods, so those just get saved in case we have another hurricane threat.

You know what's bad about tornados in Florida? The houses don't have basements or cellars, we just have to run to the safest place in the house with no window usually a closet. That's a great place the Prayer Closet.
The tornados here I don't think are nearly half as bad as where you are. There have been many devastating tornandos in tornado ally.
We also get a LOT of lightning strikes.
I don't have a basement or cellar here either, just a hallway big enough for two people to stand up in.

When I was in Guam the threat was always some very powerful Typhoons. One was sustained winds of 220 MPH. The people there did the same thing. They bought all kinds of things then if the storm didn't hit they returned the items back to the stores. Didn't make sense to me. I guess they needed the money more than they thought they needed the supplies.

we only have 3 standard size windows and a sliding door, so almost anyplace except where the sliding door is would be safe enough.

Our front and back doors are heavy reinforced steel doors in a steel frame. The windows are special double pain windows that are also steel framed (not aluminum) and the glass is some special type of glass that is supposed to take the brunt of flying objects that are traveling in tornado force winds.
So far the neighborhood I am in has never had a tornado hit it. The closest tornado on record for here was about three miles to the south of us. The weather "experts" say it has something to do with the Illinois River that runs right past us and the slight valley we are in. The same was told about a town 25 miles from here. That city was bragging about it and that same year a tornado went right through the center of the city destroying some buildings and landmarks that were over 200 years old.

Our kids are grown and on their own, so the wife and I have an empty nest that's bigger than what we need. I'd really like to build a much smaller house and build it exactly the way we want it. We would build it with a safe room inside the house instead of a cellar outside of the house. We can even get tax rebates here for building a house with a safe room, and it also lowers the insurance. The ones that I've seen could withstand just about anything except a nuclear bomb.
I was just thinking about our little storm alert radio that sounds an alarm for bad weather. If I do get to sleep, I can sleep through that alarm and never hear it.
It's designed to go off any time that the winds will be over 50 mph, and that's pretty often in a normal year of thunderstorms. Sadly, the weather trends here have changed over the last few years, and we don't get enough rain to keep the stock ponds from going dry. Maybe we shouldn't have complained at all when we had plenty of rain and some wind damage.
I think that I've only been in a hurricane once, and that was as a child. We were caught out in a car and I remember being scared half to death. Dad couldn't drive in it, so he just pulled off the road for what seemed like 3 to 5 hours. We couldn't see anything at all, and we heard things hitting the car and felt the car being blown around. Those were the days when family cars were built like tanks, but the weight of the car was just barely enough to keep it on the ground. I remember everything being flooded and all kinds of damage everywhere, so I was happy to get into a safe place. Whew! - I'm remembering that was in Galveston, TX in about 1957. I still think of Galveston immediately when I hear the word "hurricane". Katrina finally convinced my aunt and cousins to leave Galveston and move to Fort Worth. 1957 is all I wanted of hurricanes.

I can't count all the hurricanes, typhoons and tornadoes that I have been through, both on land and at sea. It's real fun to be at sea and go straight through a hurricane. On can actually walk on the walls.

My son told me about this from his Navy days, and he said it was pretty wild. He also told me it was always rough going around the Cape of Africa. I can't remember the name of the club the Navy uses to signify that someone has gone around the Cape, but my son is a member.
For whatever reason I don't understand, the harsh rolling seas never bothered him at all. I know that many people would get sick, including probably me. He also told us that many storms are incredibly beautiful to watch at sea. AND, obviously the sunrise and sunset show the MASTER'S work at sea with nothing to get in the way and ruin the beauty.

I was just laughing and thinking that you had them completely under control. If they don't act nice - you don't feed them.
That would straighten them out in a hurry.
