THE DOCTRINE OF SANCTIFICATION

THE DOCTRINE OF SANCTIFICATION
Scripture Reading: II Timothy 2:20, 21
"We are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all...For by one offering He hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified" (Hebrews 10:10,14). God has set us apart unto Himself. "He (in Christ) gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from all iniquity, and PURIFY UNTO HIMSELF A PECULIAR PEOPLE, ZEALOUS OF GOOD WORKS" (Titus 2:14). This is our positional sanctification, which places us under spiritual obligation to prove ourselves worthy of His expectation. "For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus UNTO GOOD WORKS, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them" (Ephesians 2:10).
The Apostle Paul exhorts us to faithfully dedicate ourselves to this end. "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God. which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God" (Romans 12:I, 2).
Paul explains his responsibility to encourage our faithfulness through "ministering the gospel of God, that the offering up of the Gentiles might be acceptable, BEING SANCTIFIED BY THE HOLY GHOST" (Romans 15:16b). "If a man purge himself from these (vessels of dishonor), he shall be a vessel unto honour, SANCTIFIED, and meet for the Master's use, and prepared unto every good work."
Pastor Robert Hanna, Calif.

~THE DOCTRINE OF REGENERATION~

~Daily Inspirational ~ ~THE DOCTRINE OF REGENERATION~ JUNE 30, 2006
~THE DOCTRINE OF REGENERATION~
Scripture Reading: II Corinthians 5:17
"If any man be in Christ, he is a new creation: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." This is the only way that one can become a new creation. Our own efforts are limited to our feeble attempts to improve the old creation, which is directly opposed to the Word of God. Regardless of the physical condition of the natural man - even the moral state - the Word of God labels it unacceptable in His sight. "For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit... They that are in the flesh cannot please God... But if the Spirit of Him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, He that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken (make alive) your mortal bodies by His Spirit that dwelleth in you" (Romans 8:5, 8,11).
"That which is born of flesh is, flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit" (John 3:6). Only the Holy Spirit does the work of regeneration. Having become a new creation, we are urged to behave accordingly. Put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; and be renewed in the spirit of your mind... Put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness" (Ephesians 4:22-24).
Conflict between the old and new natures will continue as long as this world is our abode. "Who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 7:25).
Pastor Robert Hanna, CALIF.

ARE BELIEVERS ABOVE THE LAW?

ARE BELIEVERS ABOVE THE LAW?
by Russell S. Miller
Some people understand the grace principal to mean that living "under grace" we may do as we please, but grace is, by no means, a license to sin. However, it is argued that because the covenant of the law was made with Israel, Gentiles were not under the law, and Romans 3:19 is cited in support of this thinking:
"Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God."
The covenant of the law was, indeed, made with God’s chosen nation, Israel, and no such covenant was ever made with any other nation, but that did not exclude Gentiles from God’s law. The law was given, we read, "that every mouth might be stopped, and all the world might become guilty before God" (Rom.3:19). So, Israel represented the righteous and holy standards of the Law of God in the world. And "when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves" (Rom.2:14). This bears witness that Gentiles had "the law written in their hearts" (Rom.2:15). It is no wonder that we have such a lawless society today when believers feel themselves to be above the law.
In this dispensation of grace it is blessedly true of us, that "sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace" (Rom.6:14). "Free from the Law" does not mean that we are above the law, although we are to produce that fruit which is spiritual (Col.3:1-4), and heavenly (Eph.1:20,21; 2:6), in character. In so doing we shall, by His grace, accomplish what the law could never do.
Therefore as members of the Body of Christ the Apostle Paul exhorts us:
"This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh" (Gal.5:16).
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, "Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law" (Gal.5:22,23).

THE DOCTRINE OF SUBSTITUTION

~Daily Inspirational ~ THE DOCTRINE OF SUBSTITUTION July 2, 2006
THE DOCTRINE OF SUBSTITUTION
Scripture Reading: Romans 4:25; 5: I
"Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures" (1 Cor. 15:3b). The guilt of transgression was ours, but the punishment was suffered by Him "who His own self bare our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by Whose stripes ye were healed" (I Peter 2:24). Human reasoning does not accept this astounding truth. Civil courts do not operate on such a principle, which would never be recognized as either moral or just. Finite intelligence cannot conceive of punishment being rendered by a loving God, even against the guilty - much less against an innocent victim in substitution.
But this is altogether GOD'S doing. God created man. Man turned against God. For fellowship to be restored there must be a reconciliation between the parties involved, the offender and the offended. Since God is not only the victim but also the judge, His is the power to assign guilt and render punishment. We do not understand vicarious sacrifice; we must simply, by faith, receive and cherish the newness of life bestowed by the grace of God in providing it. "[He] was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification. Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ."
Such is the miracle of love and grace by "God our Saviour; Who will have [wishes] ALL MEN to be saved, and to come to the knowledge of the truth... Who gave Himself a ransom FOR ALL" (I Timothy 2:4, 6).
Pastor Robert Hanna, Calif.

~ONE THING~

~ONE THING~
by C. R. Stam
Referring to the great Temple of God, which King David so earnestly hoped to build, he said:
“ONE THING HAVE I DESIRED of the Lord; that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to enquire in His temple” (Psa.27:4).
Similarly, when Martha of Bethany complained to Jesus that Mary “sat at [His] feet and heard His Word” while she was left to serve alone, the Lord answered:
“Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things, but ONE THING IS NEEDFUL, and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her” (Luke 10: 41,42).
Today, with regard to the message of grace from the ascended, glorified Lord, the Apostle Paul exhorts us: “Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly” (Col.3:16). Wonderful results follow such a determination to know Christ through the Word.
When the Lord Jesus opened the eyes of the blind beggar, the poor man was immediately persecuted by the religious leaders of the day. He could not answer all of their questions but he could answer the one most important to himself:
“ONE THING I KNOW, that, whereas I was blind, now I see” (John 9:25).
The rest of the narrative relates how the blind beggar also received spiritual sight as, face to face with the Son of God, he exclaimed: “Lord, I believe! …and…worshipped Him” (Ver.38 ).
But what about our conduct after spiritual sight has been bestowed? The most consecrated believer will acknowledge that he often fails to live up to the light he has received. St. Paul, by inspiration, gives us the solution to this problem also, saying:
“THIS ONE THING I DO: forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press [strain] toward the goal for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus” (Phil.3: 13,14).

THE CAPTAIN OF OUR SALVATION

~Daily Inspirational ~ THE CAPTAIN OF OUR SALVATION July 5, 2006
THE CAPTAIN OF OUR SALVATION
by C. R. Stam
Years ago a man of God was asked to preach at the funeral of a young soldier whose parents were unsaved.
During the course of his message the preacher sought to impress upon his hearers the basic fact that “the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Rom.6:23).
This greatly upset the parents. After the service they complained: “This is embarrassing. Our boy was not a sinner.”
The truth was that shortly before his death this young man had done what every true, born-again Christian has done. He acknowledged himself to be a lost sinner and, trusting Christ as his Savior, had been so gloriously saved that his parents were mystified that he could be so happy in the face of death.
The simplest believer in Christ understands all this. He knows that for the “old man” the death of the body is indeed a “dishonorable discharge” for laws broken, orders disobeyed, responsibilities unmet, and trusts betrayed. But for the “new man the death of the body is the vestibule through which he is ushered into the blessed presence of “the Captain of our Salvation,” the One who “by the grace of God tasted death for every man” that He might “bring many sons unto glory” (See Hebrews 2:9,10).
This is why we read in Hebrews 2:14,15:
“Forasmuch, then, as the children [of Adam] were partakers of flesh and blood, He [Christ] also Himself likewise took part of the same; that through death He might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; “And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.
No wonder St. Paul’s simple message of salvation was: “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved” (Acts 16:31).

~THE DOCTRINE OF ADOPTION~
Scripture Reading: Ephesians 1:3-7
We who are saved under the dispensation of grace are the most spiritually privileged and blessed of all generations of believers. Our positional status, our standing, transcends that of any previous children of God. Upon believing unto salvation we come into possession of every conceivable spiritual blessing and assurance. Knowing full well that we are totally undeserving of it, God has placed us as His full-grown, full-fledged sons - joint-heirs with Christ. We have served no apprenticeship, nor have we performed any required act of qualification to prove eligibility to inherit our promised ascension to the glory, seated together with Him in the heavenlies.
Such is our unequivocally assured eternal future: "the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of His glory" (Ephesians 1:14b). But we are even now enjoying our standing as full sons while "waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body" (Romans 8:23b). "For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with Him, that we may be also glorified together" (Romans 8:14-17). Addressing the head of the family, 'Abba, Father' is indicative of respectful familiarity, expressing trustfulness and reliance - an appropriate title to the privileged son and heir, the adopted by Jesus Christ.

~ THE GRACE VINE~
By Steve McVey
Give me one of the great compositions written by Bach and let me sit down to the piano and I can play every note of the piece. Hand me Marriage of Figaro by Mozart and I can play every note on the page. When I play the songs for you, there will be only one problem with my effort. I can't play the notes on the page in the order they are written. In other words, I can only sit down and bang on the piano, hitting every note at practically the same time to ensure that at some point I will have struck every key on the piano keyboard.
Can you envision me doing what I'm describing - banging on the piano like a small child? What I said initially is true - when I'm finished, I will have played every note written by the composer - just not the way he intended. That fact creates a problem. What I would be doing isn't really making music. Playing the notes in the wrong order is really just banging on the piano keyboard. Not only does it fail to meet the definition of music, it will soon give anybody who hears it a headache.
Sometimes we all have a tendency to live our lives that way. The Holy Spirit reveals to us God's plan for our lives in certain ways and we then set out to make it happen. We think that if we just know the plan God has for us, we can make it play out. However, when we try to do it on our own, instead of making music we create a discordant mess.
Abraham did it when God told him that He was going to give Abe a son through Sarah. The song didn't have the tempo Abraham expected. It moved too slowly for him, so he decided to take matters into his own hands by going to Hagar Nine months later a sour note was born named Ishmael.
God's people have often found themselves off key when they have tried to live independent of Him. Israel one day determined that they would defeat Jericho on their own terms instead of following the direction of the Composer/Conductor and they soon found themselves singing the discordant dirge of defeat
The early disciples were told to wait in the upper room until they were endued with power from on high. Instead, Peter took the baton and led the whole group in a stanza of "Let's Elect A New Apostle." Some guy named Matthias ended up as the new note in the symphony of early church history, but he didn't really fit the piece. In fact, he played that one measure in church life and then pretty much was never heard from again. In God's time, Paul became a sustained note He played who harmonized perfectly with His Salvation Sonata
There's a lesson we need to learn and then learn again. We can't make the music. Only God can. He wrote the melody and He alone is the one who can conduct it.
How does this practically apply to life? It means that it is important to wait on the Lord. Don't grow impatient because you believe the things God wants for your circumstances aren't unfolding as fast as you think they should be happening.
God is the composer of your life. He writes the notes and He leads the playing of the composition. When we try to take matters into our own hands, we're acting like a child banging on the piano. There's no way we can turn our circumstances into music.
If we wait on the Lord, however, we will discover that His timing and His order will create a melody in life that we could never create. Don't make the mistake of thinking you have to make something happen. Just keep your eyes on the Conductor and He will tell you when to hit the notes and which ones to hit. When you follow His direction, you will be amazed at the tune of triumph you will hear coming out of your own life. Anything else is nothing than the flat notes of a faithless lifestyle.

HE GAVE THANKS

HE GAVE THANKS
by C. R. Stam
At the institution of the Lord’s Supper, as He took the bread and the wine, we read that he “gave thanks” (Matt.26: 26,27; Luke 22:19,20).
Surely on this occasion He did not give thanks for food supplied! He was handling the symbols of His broken body and His shed blood. How we would like to know just what He said at this solemn moment; just what He gave thanks for!
This we shall never know in this life, but there are some basic facts we do know.
It was for love for sinful men that He was to die. He was to pay their debt of sin, and He looked forward to the time when, not only redeemed Israel, but the redeemed of every nation and dispensation will rejoice in sins forgiven and all that this entails for them. As He “gave thanks” in view of Calvary, He will then rejoice at the results of Calvary. The overflowing joy that will be the portion of the redeemed will be a greater joy to Him.
Thus Paul’s words in Hebrews 12:2 give us cause to rejoice in true thanksgiving of our Lord’s finished work of redemption on Calvary cross:
“Looking unto Jesus the Author and Finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

OUR VICTORIOUS WARFARE
- BY LEON TUCKER
'Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.' EPHESIANS 6:11
Speaking strictly within the Scriptures, the Church is not even on the earth. It is viewed by God as seated in the heavenlies. Positionally it is there, conditionally it is here: but spiritually it must reckon itself dead, buried, raised and seated with Christ in heavenly places. If the conflict of the Church is not against 'flesh and blood,' against who is it?
'Against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of the world, against spiritual wickedness in heavenly places.'
Four times 'against.' Four things, 'against,' - 'principalities,' 'powers,' 'rulers of darkness' and' spiritual wickedness'.
Let us ponder and consider these persons and powers of the underworld now holding possession and position in the upper world. Who are they? Where are they? Why are they?
They are wicked spiritual hosts in military organization camped and entrenched in the heavenlies. They are invisible agents of wickedness in an organized spirit world. They are the rulers of the darkness of this age They actually exercise rule over this world in this age - time of darkness and delusion. They direct the energy of the age. They are unquestionably organized in military order. Militarism not only prevails on the earth, but maintains in the heavenlies. Intimations and allusions to this organization may be found in Ephesians 1:21 and Colossians 2:15. The Book of Revelation seems to open unto this very sphere and describes a future struggle (see Revelation 12:7-9). The leaders of these hosts alone are mentioned.
When Christ was raised up from the dead and exalted to the highest point in the universe, He passed through these organized ranks who were powerless to prevent Him passing through and up. Says Ephesians 1:21: 'Far above all principalities and power and might and dominion.' Christ has been raised infinitely above them and they wait beneath His feet for their future humiliation and casting down.
Having failed to defeat Christ, the head of the Church, they now turn their attention to the Church, the Body of Christ. God has purposed that the 'heavenlies' will be the sphere of the future service of the Church (see Eph. 3:10). Its calling is heavenly, its ministry will be heavenly, therefore its conflict is 'heavenly.' The place now occupied by 'wicked hosts' will be then occupied by the Church. The Church must realize the character of this conflict and be properly armored. 'Put on the whole armour of God,' says the Apostle, 'that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.' The word wile is 'stratagem,' cunning art of a spiritual foe. Not a flesh and blood conflict where human wit must meet human wit, but a warfare issuing for the secret counsels of a world of darkness and demons. This is the one and only sphere of the conflict and contest of the Church. All other enmity to the Church is created and promoted from this seat of antagonism.

NOW AND FOREVER FREE!
By Miles Stanford
"Waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ" (1 Cor. 1:7,8 ).
We can trust Him for our matriculation here, and we can trust Him for our examination and graduation in Glory!
"That word, 'blameless,' may be translated 'unimpeachable' or 'unaccusable.' In other words, when we stand at last at the judgment seat of Christ, God Himself is going to see to it that no charge can stand against any believer, because the Lord Jesus Christ has atoned for all our sins with His own precious Blood. Every failure in life will be dealt with there, and all the wood, hay, and stubble will be burned in the fire of that day and we shall stand before our Lord unimpeachable, unaccusable." -H.A.I.
"Instead of my sins being between myself and Him, as before, it is Himself who is now between me and my sins; and the One who has thus interposed has given me to know that in the doing it He has brought me to Himself, and tuned my heart to His own praise.
"He has borne the judgment due to my sins, and condemned sin in the flesh; in the Person of my Substitute I am clear from, and carried beyond, the judgment forever; the power of death is annulled, that of Satan finally broken."
"Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's. elect? Shall God that justifieth? Who is he that condemneth? Shall Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us?" (Rom. 8:33,34).

REST, AND REJOICE!

~Daily Inspirational ~ REST, AND REJOICE! JULY 11, 2006
REST, AND REJOICE!
By Miles Stanford
"Rejoice in the Lord always!" (Phil. 4:4).
Exhaustive effort brings home the necessity of strengthening rest. The believer will not be ready to enter into his spiritual rest until he is utterly worn out by his unsuccessful efforts to conquer sin and the old man. There is no rest for the "wretched man" of Romans 7 - that struggle must lead to the rest of Romans 8.
"Grace is sufficient for favorable circumstances, but they are by far the most trying (spiritually) to the believer. There is an easy way of going on in worldliness, and there is nothing more sad than the quiet comfortable Christian going on day by day, apart from dependence upon the Lord.
"It must be as with Israel and the manna; there must be the daily gathering and daily dependence upon God. If circumstances come between our hearts and God, we are powerless. If the Lord Jesus is nearer, circumstances will not hinder our joy in God."
"The heart of man naturally seeks rest, and seeks it here. Now, there is no rest to be found here for the believer; but it is written, 'There remaineth, therefore, a rest to the people of God' (Heb. 4:9).
"To know this is both full of blessing and full of sorrow: sorrow to the flesh; because it is always seeking its rest here, it has always to be disappointed; blessing to the spirit, because the spirit, being born of God, can only rest in God's rest, as it is said, 'If they shall enter into My rest' (Heb 4:5). What God desires for us is to bring us into the enjoyment of all that which He Himself enjoys."-J.N.D.
"Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him" (Ps. 37:7).

HIS CROSS - OUR CROSS

HIS CROSS - OUR CROSS
By Miles Stanford
"He said to them all, If any man will come after Me, let him... take up his Cross daily" (Luke 9:23).
We go all the way to Calvary in faith and there find ourselves identified with the Lord Jesus in His death and resurrection. And Calvary comes all the way to us in experience as the Holy Spirit applies that finished work to our lives.
"It must be as with Israel and the manna; there must be the daily gathering and daily dependence upon God. If circumstances come between our hearts and God, we are powerless. If the Lord Jesus is nearer, circumstances will not hinder our joy in God."
"In the Reformation there was, through grace, a great deliverance. The groundwork of Christianity was recovered; namely, justification by faith. But though this was recovered, it was not maintained that the old man was crucified on the Cross, and hence they only refused the exactions of popery, but recognized the flesh as still before God. Refusing the exaction was right; but the retention of that in which the exaction could be made, the old man, was the weakness of the Reformation."
"I do not see the Cross truly if I only see it as opening a way of escape for me, and yet allowing that in me to escape which has incurred the judgment of the Cross. "
"In the present day (1867) the truth is lowered to the measure of man's need; hence if the need is met, which grace does, the convert makes little or no advance; he rests in the satisfaction of his need, instead of being directed to the scope of God's thought, which only begins with his need.
"Where would souls be put if they were simply and definitely instructed in Christ Jesus and Him crucified and risen; connected by faith with the living One, who was crucified, and whose death terminated man in the flesh?" --J.BS.
"Whosoever doth not bear his Cross, and come after Me, cannot be My disciple" (Luke 14:27).

Daily Inspirational ~ SPIRIT-TAUGHT AND SPIRIT-WROUGHT JULY 15, 2006
SPIRIT-TAUGHT AND SPIRIT-WROUGHT
"Hath made us alive together with Christ" (Eph. 2:5).
If we fail to rely upon the Holy Spirit for the practical day-by-day realization of the identification truths, we will fall short of Romans 8, and find ourselves bound in the struggle of Romans 7.
"If some of you who have been the Lord's for a long time cast a glance over your past history, you will be able to recall occasions when He spoke and you obeyed instantly. But you can recall other occasions when He spoke and you failed to respond; yet strangely, after a time you just found yourself in the way of obedience.
"Such is the fruit of the Holy Spirit's government in our lives. Even if we are totally unable to obey and cannot even exercise faith, a day comes when the resistance has vanished and we are trusting the Lord Jesus in simplicity of heart. It is the tireless energy of the indwelling Spirit that has accomplished this.
"Our union with the Lord Jesus is a union of life. We were raised with Him, we are made alive in Him. True, our bodies are to be changed, and those who have died in Christ are to be raised as to their bodies, but now we are raised with and are made alive in Him.
"The trouble is that many are not aware of this wonderful fact and position; all of it seems so far away and unreal. If we will believe God's Word and begin to thank Him for the truths that He tells us, the Holy Spirit will ere long begin to make these truths living realities in our lives."-L.L.L.
"And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus" (Eph. 2:6).

SHOULD CHRIST'S BODY WORK?

~Daily Inspirational ~ SHOULD CHRIST'S BODY WORK? (1 of 3 ) JULY 16, 2006
SHOULD CHRIST'S BODY WORK?
- (Part 1 of 3 )
Have you ever come across some item in your home which doesn't work any more? We have - ever so often! We usually make one of two decisions: either save it with the idea of repairing it so it will work, or discard it as 'junk.'
Should the saved people of this dispensation of the grace of God work? In the words of the above caption, 'Should Christ's Body work?' 'What do you mean?' you ask. After an individual becomes truly saved and thereby becomes a member of the Church, which is Christ's Body, is it necessary for that individual to do 'good works'? How do you answer that question? If you say 'Yes', can you prove it by the Word of God 'rightly divided'?
If you say 'No,' can you do likewise?
What saith the Scriptures? Realizing that our glorified Lord has made the Apostle Paul God's revelator to the Church, which is Christ's Body (as Moses was God's revelator to Israel), we turn first to his writings to answer this question. 'For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto (for the purpose of) good works, which God hath before ordained (prepared before-hand) that we should walk them' (Ephesians 2:10). 'That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge (full knowledge) of God' (Colossians 1:10), 'For it is God who worketh in you both to will and to do (work) of (for) His good pleasure' (Philippians 2:13). 'Who gave himself for us, that He might redeem us from all iniquity (lawlessness). that he might purify unto himself a people of his own, zealous of good works' (Titus 2:14). ''This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they who have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men' (Titus
3:8 ), 'As we have, therefore, opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith' (Galatians 6:10). 'This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of bishop (overseer), he desireth a good work' (1 Timothy :3:1)'.
These are but seven of many more exhortations of God in the Pauline epistles to point out that the members of Christ's Body should engage in 'good works' as a result of being a 'new creation in Christ.'
The Pauline Scriptures especially make it perfectly clear that the believer's forgiveness, justification, and standing in Christ are not matters of humanly produced works. Our standing in Christ is based wholly and totally upon Christ's work which is finished for us upon His death and resurrection. 'This is why our salvation is all of grace through faith: 'For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God - not of works, lest any man should boast.' 'And if by grace, then is it no more of works, otherwise grace is no more grace, But if it be of works, then is it no more grace, otherwise work is no more work' (Romans 11:6). 'But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justified the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness' (Romans 4:5). See also Titus 3:5-7.
Since works (good or otherwise) cannot affect our standing in Christ, are they necessary at all in the Christian walk? What saith the Scriptures? God's maintenance program for each member of Christ's Church is stated in Titus 3:8 (which we have previously quoted). Read it again and think about it. Tomorrow, Lord willing, we'll say more about 'Should Christ's Body ?' In the meantime let's ask ourselves,
'Are we doing HIS good pleasure?'
Grace, Peace and Love,
Pastor P. Hume
