News Crew Attacked at Islamic School

A news crew from KSTP, ABC channel 5 in Minneapolis, was assaulted today during a visit to Tarek ibn Ziyad Academy.  Two men confronted the journalists who had gone to the school to obtain a comment from the school about a state Department of Education finding against the school.

    In an attempt to report about the new findings from the Department of Education, 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS went to TiZA. While on school grounds, our crew was attacked by school officials. Our photographer was injured while wrestling with the two men over the camera.

    Our photographer was examined by paramedics and suffered minor injuries.

The academy initially came under investigation after a teacher alleged that the school was engaged in Islamic instruction in violation of its state charter, some of which have been borne out, including more-or-less mandatory prayer and an after-school Islamic study period.

Since try were attacked by school officals, the officcals from the school need to be arrested for assault.

Nation of Islam to police Miami?
City pays mosque-based Muslim group $150,000 to patrol, promote civility

The City of Miami hired Muslims with ties to the Nation of Islam to patrol streets and keep the peace.

The city will pay $150,000 to Peacemakers, a civilian group run by Progressive Land Development International, as part of a $1 million crime-fighting initiative, Fox News reports. However, a great deal of controversy has been caused by the organization's mailing address – it also belongs to the Miami's Nation of Islam.

Though Peacemakers insists it has no official affiliation with the Muslim organization, the patrolling group is run by well-known NOI member Rasul Muhammad. He is also the son of late Elijah Muhammad, the man responsible for developing the NOI.

Peacemakers' corporate offices are also located in Miami's Nation of Islam Muhammad Mosque 29, the 7th regional headquarters of the Nation of Islam.

According to reports, Andrew Rosenkranz, the Anti Defamation League's Florida Regional Director, said the City of Miami made an odd selection when it chose the civilian patrol group to teach acceptance and civility.

The Muslim group has "a well-documented, irrefutable public record of racism, bigotry and anti-Semitism," Rosenkratz said.

According to the Miami Herald, Muhammad denied claims that the Peacemakers are racially prejudiced.

"We are not anti-Jewish people," he said. "We are not anti-Catholic people. We are not anti-white people. The whole Peacemakers project is being based on being anti-crime, anti-immorality. ... Are they saying that they don't want peace?''

However, Rosenkranz said Miami should look at examples set by other cities who enlisted members of the Nation of Islam for programs.

A $15,000 New Orleans Police Department contract with Nation of Islam's Louis Farrakhan was scrapped in 2005 after the public protested the organization's reputation for anti-Semitism.

"While we appreciate the City of Miami's efforts to improve conditions in the Overtown area, we are concerned that it did not fully understand the nature of the organization that it chose to provide these services," Rosenkranz told Fox News.

The City of Miami stands by its choice, and Ed O'Dell, spokesman for the city's Community Redevelopment Agency, claimed they extended an invitation to their meeting to several community and faith-based groups following requests from home and night club owners for improved safety measures

"Other groups were at the meeting," he said. "Homeowners' groups, pastors, parents – anyone could come. I don't know why they didn't want to be a part of it."

An official agreement has not yet been signed, and O'Dell said there are other positive components to the $1 million contract.

"These are really three separate contracts, the surveillance cameras, extra police and the Peacemakers," he said. "The idea is to have as a component of the whole package, people on the street who are taking charge of their own community, so that it's not just a police state with big brother and cameras watching."

Still, Rosenkranz said he is still concerned about the Muslim group's intolerance, and he is not convinced it will be an asset to the city's streets.

"The Anti-Defamation League strongly believes that there is never justification for racism, intolerance and anti-Semitism and remains concerned about the Nation of Islam's activities."

Then they refuse to read the news. Everyday there is violence, and islam is normally the cause of the violence through their own violence.

Alleged 9/11 mastermind requests death penalty
Tribunal begins for five alleged plotters charged with 2,973 murders

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed said Thursday that he would welcome the death penalty for his confessed role as mastermind of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

“Yes, this is what I wish, to be a martyr for a long time,” Mohammed told a military judge who warned that he faces execution if convicted of organizing the attacks on America. “I will, God willing, have this, by you.”

The former No. 3 leader of al-Qaida and four alleged co-conspirators were being arraigned Thursday in their long-awaited first appearance before a war-crimes tribunal. All five face death if convicted of war crimes including murder, conspiracy, attacking civilians and terrorism in the 2001 attacks, which killed 2,973 people.

Mohammed wore thick glasses and a turban and stroked a bushy gray beard, in stark contrast to the disheveled hair, unshaven face and T-shirt he wore when he was captured in Pakistan in 2003. All five defendants wore cream-colored clothing and turbans.

Appearing calm as he propped his glasses on his turban to peer at legal papers, Mohammed also grinned and exchanged a few words with someone at the defense table occupied by Waleed bin Attash, who allegedly selected and trained some of the 19 hijackers who turned airplanes into missiles in the attacks.

He rejects military lawyer
As the judge tried to question him about whether he was satisfied with the U.S. military lawyer appointed to defend him, Mohammed stood and began to sing in Arabic, cheerfully pausing to translate his own words into English.

“My shield is Allah most high,” he said, adding that his religion forbade him from accepting a lawyer from the United States and that he wanted to act as his own attorney.

He criticized the United States for fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq, waging what he called “a crusader war,” and enacting what he considers illegal laws, including those authorizing same-sex marriages.

The judge, Marine Col. Ralph Kohlmann, tried to persuade Mohammed to accept an attorney, telling him, “It’s a bad idea for you to represent yourself.”

Court transcripts show that Mohammed told a military review panel last year that he approached Osama bin Laden with the proposal to hijack passenger planes and crash them into landmark U.S. buildings, then oversaw execution of the plan “from A to Z,” according to U.S. military transcripts of the hearing.

But Mohammed cast doubt on that transcript in Thursday’s hearing. “They mistranslated my words and put many words in my mouth,” he said in English.

First big tribunal test
The arraignment of the alleged al-Qaida co-conspirators begins the highest-profile test yet of the military’s tribunal system, which faces an uncertain future. The Supreme Court is to rule this month on the rights of Guantanamo prisoners, potentially delaying or halting the proceedings.

It also carries some strategic risk: the military is trying to minimize the chance that Mohammed will be able to spread al-Qaida propaganda in courtroom speeches. Kohlmann announced a 20-second delay in the closed-circuit video feed to prevent classified information from being disclosed outside the courtroom.

It is the first public appearance for Mohammed since his capture in Pakistan in 2003. He was held in CIA custody at secret sites and then transferred to the U.S. Navy base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in 2006, where the exact location of his cell also is top-secret.

Mohammed’s defense team has said he may have suffered cognitive impairment from harsh interrogations in CIA custody. The Bush administration acknowledged in February that Mohammed was waterboarded — a technique that involves strapping a person down and pouring water over his or her cloth-covered face to create the sensation of drowning.

The Supreme Court struck down the commissions as unconstitutional in 2006. Congress then altered and resurrected them, but they have remained mired in confusion over courtroom rules, dogged by delays, and challenged repeatedly as unconstitutional.

Military commissions have been conducted since George Washington used them after the end of the Revolutionary War, but this is the first time the United States has used them during an ongoing conflict, said Air Force Brig. Gen. Tom Hartmann, a top tribunal official.

Army Col. Steve David, chief defense counsel for the tribunals, said the military commissions are “fundamentally flawed.”

“We will zealously identify and expose each and every (flaw),” Davis said Wednesday.

Prosecutors want to start the trial phase on September 15, a date the defense says was chosen to influence the U.S. presidential election in November.

The defense recently asked Kohlmann to dismiss the case and remove Hartmann, who was accused of political meddling by a former chief prosecutor for the tribunals.

Hartmann has insisted the trials will be fair, and said he has not been asked to recuse himself from the upcoming trial.

Journalists were allowed to see the closed-circuit TV feed from a nearby press room. Some other observers including Fang Wong, a senior American Legion member, also were allowed to see the arraignment, which comes seven years after the attacks.

“I’m from the New York area, and I have been waiting for this for a long time,” Wong said as he waited to be searched by soldiers before entering the tightly guarded court complex.

Guards were near the men but no firearms were to be allowed in the courtroom, said Army Col. Wendy Kelly. Mohammed and the other four detainees can be restrained by retractable leg chains hidden underneath the raised courtroom floor if they become unruly, she said.

Obama, McCain on same page
With less than eight months remaining in President Bush’s term, presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain both say they want to close the military’s offshore detention center.

Obama opposed the Military Commissions Act that in 2006 resurrected the military commissions, but McCain supported it.

The modular courtroom can be taken down and “sent to Fort Bragg, Fort Lewis, or any installation that needs a big courtroom,” Kelly said.

The military expects the joint arraignment of the five to last just one day. The prisoners will be formally notified of the nature of the charges, will be told of their rights to attorneys and will be given the opportunity to enter a plea, though they do not have to enter one, Hartmann said before the hearing began.

The other defendants are: Ramzi Binalshibh, said to have been the main intermediary between the hijackers and al-Qaida leaders; Ali Abd al-Aziz Ali, known as Ammar al-Baluchi, a nephew and lieutenant of Mohammed; al-Baluchi’s assistant, Mustafa Ahmad al-Hawsawi.

The five are charged with committing terrorism and conspiring with al-Qaida to murder civilians in the attacks that launched the Bush administration's global war on terrorism. They also face 2,973 counts of murder, one for each person killed in 2001 when hijacked passenger planes slammed into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a Pennsylvania field.

The other defendants are accused of helping choose, train and fund the 19 hijackers, assisting their flight school enrollment and travel to the United States.

Mohammed is represented by two officers from the Navy and the Air Force. Two civilian attorneys from Idaho, including one who defended a client accused in the white supremacist Ruby Ridge case, also represent the Pakistani.

Arabs to discuss Israel's role in Med Union - Libya

TRIPOLI (Reuters) - Leaders from Arab Mediterranean states will meet in Tripoli on Tuesday to seek a common stance on a proposed union of Mediterranean countries due to be launched next month, Libyan officials said.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad will attend the mini summit, which will discuss Israel's role in the new union proposed by France and endorsed by European Union leaders.

Arab states fear joining the union alongside Israel might imply a normalisation of their relations with the Jewish state.

"They will forge a common stand on participation," an Arab diplomat said. "The only worry is the idea that Israel might join without needing to make any tangible concessions in peace talks with the Palestinians and Syrians."

The union was originally proposed by France as a way of boosting ties with the European Union's southern neighbours and improving trade and security cooperation.

Algeria said last week clarification was still needed on the union's institutions, financing and decision making, as well as Israel's role.

Any normalisation of ties with Israel should be based on the 2002 Arab peace initiative calling for Israel to withdraw from territories it occupied in 1967, said Algerian Foreign Minister Mourad Medelci

France's staunch ally Morocco has shown the most willingness to take part in the union and French President Nicolas Sarkozy chose the Moroccan port city of Tangier for his speech last year in which he appealed for a Mediterranean Union.

Officials in Tripoli said Morocco's king would not be attending Tuesday's gathering and the country would be represented by lower-level officials.

Some foreign dignitaries were due to start arriving later on Monday, they said.

The plan on the table is a scaled-back version of France's original proposal which would have grouped only states with a Mediterranean coastline and involved nine new agencies and a bank.

The latest proposal would see a regular summit of EU and Mediterranean countries with a presidency and a small secretariat. The project is due to be unveiled in Paris on July 13.
