Title: Old TV Shows Remembered
Post by: Bronzesnake on April 21, 2005, 02:43:04 PM
Does anyone remember old TV shows that you watched as kids?

 here's a few I recall.

Rip Chord - A show that, as I recall involved rescues involving parachuting.

Rawhide - A western which followed the events arising out of a cattle drive. This was Clint Eastwood’s first series.

Lost In Space - Most baby boomers will remember the original TV series of the Robinson’s who were ship wrecked on a distant planet. When I got "old", and saw the show in rerun, I was horrified to realise Mr. Smith was gay!

Rat Patrol - Desert warfare

Combat - WWII stuff, starring the late Vic Morrow

My Favourite Martian - About a goofy looking martian and his exchanges with earthlings.

Heck Ramsey - About the first detective in the old west to use modern scientific methods such as finger prints, to solve crimes. Sort of an old west C.S.I, starring Richard Boone.

Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom - One of the very first nature series which often pitted man against beast such as alligator and lion wrestling. It was later cancelled after it was discovered these "wild" encounters were actually staged. I can't recall the chaps name - I believe his last name was Perkins.

Perry Mason - Still one of my favourites. A lawyer who won all but one case, which the prosecution won, headed by Mr. Hamilton Berger "Ham Burger" Starring Canadian, Raymond Burr, as Perry Mason.

I could go on but I'll pass the torch and give someone else a chance to stump the old folks!

Cars? Whats a car? now a horse drawn wagon I know.  :D :D

I can remember my Dad's first car. A used 1950 Chevy sedan, ugly green. What a car. The day he brought it home he went out and pulled up the old cast iron horse pole. My grandpa still had his model T.

Our first TV was a black and white with a round picture tube. Our electrical wiring wasn't grounded and when an electrical storm hit a lighting bolt came through the house right over my head hit the TV. Man what a firestorm!

It was time for TV number two.

How about pysco Ronny Reigns, John Hall,, or Little Richard? those guys, had the blocks that really could hurt you. Then the women, who could hurt you. Shirley Hardman, Sally Vega, Colleen Murrell, or Toni Kadrmas.

As you can tell, I enjoyed Roller Derby.

Did anyone mention:

Gene Autry
I Remember Mama (Nels, Katrin, Dagmar)
Detective King (Goodnight! I'm coming home Mabel)
Your Hit Parade (Dorothy Collins)
Dinah Shore Show
Dick Clark's Bandstand

Does anyone remember that the picture tube turned snowy after about midnight?  TV was off the air until around 6:00 or 7:00 in the morning.

Does anyone remember, "This is the Dumont Television Network" between programs?

The days of "tube replacements"!  ;D

Oh, I almost forgot.  There were floor models and table models.  The table models were less expensive.  The floor models were actually in "real" wood cabinets.

Aahh, "how sweet it was."  :D

I do pine sometimes for those "good ole days."

Sister Chris,

:D  I remember most of what you mentioned. You stumped me on several of the old shows. I told my children about the days before television, and they looked at me like I was crazy. It was something like:

"Dad, how did they do mass communications in those days - jungle drums?"  :D

I told them we actually had a telephone, and the entire number for dialing it locally was three digits.  ;D  Again, they looked at me like I was crazy.

I told them we lived in a very modern home with one bathroom, 1 bedroom, and an add-on porch that doubled as another bedroom.  Things were rough back then and my mother's sister and her family also lived in the same house of about 700 square feet. So, we had 4 adults and 6 children using that modern house that even had indoor plumbing and electricity. My kids didn't believe me.  ;D

Me thinks that the last several generations were spoiled. Now, a child is considered to be deprived if their parents don't buy them $70 - $90 tennis shoes.

Back to the thread topic:  it's really pretty sad that we've gone from the Lone Ranger to the Gay Stranger for shows to watch.

Love In Christ,
Tom

Acts 26:18  To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.

I remember a time before TV. Everyone sat around the big RCA radio listening to the Lone Ranger and The Shadow Knows. Having to go to the outhouse that was unheated. Using a big metal tub for bathing where the water was heated on the stove. These tubs are now used on farms for watering horses.

I remember our first TV with only a few programs a day which were mostly news reels. Getting up at 5 AM to shovel coal into the furnace in order to have heat for the day. A telephone on the wall with a crank that you had to turn to get the operator who had to patch you through to the person you wanted to talk to.

Yes folks "Andy of Mayberry" was modern in comparison.

Those were the days when neighbors actually knew each other and a mans word with a handshake actually meant something. The big event would be a town picnic with prayer and a sermon (in public even).

Enjoyed your posts BEP and PR.  Our telephone number had 3 digits and a letter, something like 425R.  Then they dropped the letter, and phone numbers were ALL numbers, no letters.

I remember the days of listening to the radio (a wooden floor model).  I remember wanting to know when the radio would play ALL music.  As a kid I wasn't interested in "news".

Our standard of living is just unbelievable today.  When did anyone in history (common people) ever live the way we do?  NEVER!  I'm not against technology, but it has taken it's toll on our lives, ie., what you said PR, about neighbors actually knowing neighbors.  Oh yea, and the handshake and word being a man's bond; it's certainly not like that today, unfortunately..................just sad, very sad.

Hey, do you all remember when kids actually played outside?  There really wasn't anything much else they could do.  Do you remember when just everyday life was "exercise"?  We didn't need to make time for extra exercise because we never even thought about it.  ;D

Does anyone remember the time when there was no bubble gum?  All of those resources were used because of WWII.

Does anyone remember when you could go to the movies for .50?

Does anyone remember when the cost of a house is what a downpayment is today?

Does anyone remember thinking our parent and grandparents lived in the "olden days"? ;D

Sometimes it's good to look back! ;)

Brothers and Sisters,

I many times think that I would have been much happier in the time frame of 1700s-1800s.

Bronzesnake, you got me on a couple, but I do remember the radio shows that Pastor Roger mentioned and others.

Chris, yes I've heard the kids talk about the "olden days" we lived in, and I remember being very interested in hearing my parents and grandparents talk about their days. I think those "olden days" where much better in many ways, especially in morals and values. I don't think that I would miss the technology much except in health care.

Ya, I agree. As much joy that old TV has brought me, it has gotten to the point where everytime I switch it on I see filth or a huge explosion caused by a guy flicking a ciggerette into a pool of gas! ::) Most of us know a ciggerette won't ignite a a pool of gas, but it happens all the time on TV. Violence and sex has become mainstream. How sad.

I would love to live in the 1700 - 1800 also, but I know I don't appreciate just how hard daily life was for those folks. Up before sunrise every day, sick or healthy to tend to the farm. Chopping wood by hand for the winter. Clearing fields of trees and brush with a beast of burden so you can grow crops etc.

Duz soap powder      “Duz Does Everything”
Rinso soap powder    "This new kind of soap dissolves instantly!"
Fels Naptha soap powder   Good for poison ivy treatment also
20 Mule Team Borax      Death Valley Days with Ronald Reagan
Ivory soap           And it floats (the idea was stolen by Swan)
Lux soap              Loveliness Of Soft Skin
Swan soap           It floats
Sweetheart soap   (You got me on this one, I don't remember any ads for it)

OK guys, I got bored easily and made fun of the ads.

How about:

Buster Brown ads
Vegemite
Burma Shave
"Dad Is The Captain, Give Him _________"

Nehi sodas also made other flavors such as orange and peach but the grape was the one that tasted the best. Grape Nehi with a Moon Pie!

That sounds like my childhood and I'm not that old!

Very good PR.

Sweetheart soap was oval in shape and originally a white color.  Both sides around the outside edges were embossed with little leaves or flowers or something.  The center was imprinted with the name, SWEETHEART SOAP.  My grandmother used it until they changed the formula and color to pink.  She didn't like it after that.  She also used SWAN but thought it a harsh soap.  Remember, there wasn't any such thing as a "detergent" in those days.  Detergents only came on the scene when synthetic fibers came into use.  They used to to tell us to use soap for natural fibers, and detergents for synthetics.  There are so many 100% cotton items in use today and ya never hear them advising to use soap.  Wonder why?  Cause one can't buy SOAP powder anymore.  Everything is a detergent.

Vegemite?  I thought that was something only Lucy Arnez used? ;D

I remember Burma Shave

I don't remember, Dad is the captain, give him________

I do remember Buster Brown....I wore their shoes and socks ;D.

Aah, Nehi Sodas...........I liked their colas.  I think orange was a favorite flavor along with the "red" cream soda.  Those were the days when they used cane sugar and not the high fructose corn syrup of today.......

Moon Pie?  Ya got me on that one.

;D  You'll wonder where the yellow went when you brush your teeth with Pepsodent.

OK - it's time for a quiz:

What was it that melts in your mouth, not your hands?

What was it that twins were always used to make ads?

What is Nehi?

Nehi is a brand name of soda's, like pepsi or coca cola.

Twins ads---------------doublemint chewing gum.

Melts in your mouth, not hands---------M&M's, of course.

Yes, the pepsodent commercial, how did I forget that one?  Remember when pepsodent also had a tooth powder?  One would sprinkle it in their hand, wet the toothbrush, dip it in the powder, and brush.

Love In Christ,
Tom

In 1950 a fellow of about 80 years of age was interviewed.  He was asked if he would want to go back to the 1800's as those days were the good ole days.  His reaction was that he liked everything about 1950.  He lived in the 1800's and would never want to go back.  He said people don't have any idea what they're talking about when they say they would want to go back to even the late 1800's.

I wonder what that man would say if he were still alive today?

It's still nice to go down memory lane once in awhile though, and nice to fantasize about what life might have been a century or two ago.

I remember watching a "Twilight Zone" movie.  A fellow kept getting on a train in NY but would find himself on a century ago train with the conductor saying, "Willowby, next stop, Willowby." When he looked out of the train's window, he saw people strolling along (the day's B4 automobiles) and music coming from the town's gazebo.  He finally decided to get off the train after about the 4th time, and enter those "good ole days."  Anyone see that one?

Dad is the captain, give him "Old Spice" a 1950s ad.

Moon Pie is still made in some areas. It is a cookie sandwich with cream filling and covered in chocolate.

Nehi belonged to Royal Crown for many years but is now produced by Cadbury-Schweppes Co. It is hard to find in stores at least in my area.

Moon Pies were produced out of a bakery factory somewhere in Tenn. The cookie portion is a graham cracker like cookie. There are festivals in the south based on RC Cola and Moon Pies.

Thank you PR.  I knew there was another name associated with Nehi but I couldn't think of what it was.........Royal Crown.  I remember those Nehi glass bottles.......thin and tall.

I'm still trying to place the Moon Pies, though.

Does anyone remember the milk man?  He delivered milk to your front door step in clear glass bottles with the cream at the top.  Later on, when they discovered that light penetrating clear glass bottles destroyed the Vitamin D, they changed to amber colored bottles.  Guess they don't care anymore as milk comes in opaque plastic gallon bottles.  Personally, I never would buy it that way for two reasons, the plastic leaches into the milk creating xeno estrogens, and the Vit. D is destroyed sitting under supermarket lights.  I buy the organic in the waxed paper cartons.  I feel a bit safer that way.

There was the egg man and the bread man in those days, too.

Hey.......knock, knock.  Do you all remember going to your friend's house wanting someone to play baseball, ride bikes together or, just hang out?

Do you remember when it was ordinary to sit down at the dinner table together, EVERY night?

Do you all remember stay at home mom's?  What other kind were there?

Unbelievable change in the last 50 or so years.

Those are a few of things that haven't changed in my house. A number of kids always comes over to ask my son to play basketball or baseball or just hang out in the front yard.

My wife was/is a stay at home Mom. We used to sit at the table every night for dinner until we moved into this apartment where there is no room for a table!  :(

Believe it or not, the history of the moon pie was just on the food network.  I usually don't watch it, but it was on.  Matterhorn, out of Boise, Idaho is now making the moon pie with ice cream in the center.  Everyone interviewed said it is really, really good.  I guess Matterhorn went in with the moon pie bakery out of Chattanooga (sp?), Tenn.  Name of the game is now co-brands.

There was one about driving in your merry oldsmobile but I forget the jingle.

Remember Rice Chex and Wheat Chex?

Remember, we actually washed and dried dishes by hand?  And, they were dried with linen dish towels that had to be ironed, (linen didn't leave lint on the glasses).  No terry towels back then.

Monday was "wash day."  Ringer washers! Bluing and Lint starch.  Clothesline was our dryer. ;D  Then, on Monday evening, the clothes were sprinked for ironing on Tuesday. I remember my mom washing all day on Monday, and ironing all day on Tuesday.  And, those were the days of 100% cotton percale, resin free, crisp white sheets.  They smelled so good from the sunshine and outside air.

WOW! - I haven't thought about those baking powder submarines in a long time.  :D

How about the old crystal radios from Heathkit that you put together yourself? I made my own special antennae and could get all kinds of far away stations, especially at night. (No speaker - just an earphone).

Does anyone remember the ads about the 90 pound weakling being embarrassed on the beach. If I remember right, that was Charles Atlas trying to sell weight lifting equipment. Every boy in the neighborhood was trying to build muscles, drink milk, and do everything they could not to be that 90 pound weakling when they got older. The ads were for teens, but they worked on kids in elementary school. In fact, every kid in the neighborhood wanted a set of those weights.  :D

Our dish towels came from flour sacks. Once the flour was gone all you had to do was unravel the seams and you had an instant dish towel. Store bought jelly came in a glass with wax to seal the top. Once empty they became drinking glasses. After that we got glasses that came in the laundry soap.

Our pot and pans were cast iron. I got in trouble for washing them to well. I washed the baked on coating off of them and Mom had to treat them in oil and stick them in a bond fire outside to recoat them.

My Mom refused to let go of her cast iron. She still had and used them up till she passed away in 1994.

Nope I lived in a very, very small town. My Grandpa lived on a farm. The town was so small we had chickens in the back yard until an ordinance was passed where we couldn't have them anymore.

The jelly with the wax seals came from the local store but they could have been homemade. Once we got some fruit trees growing we made our own the same way.

I missed that one ... Tony was Kelloggs Frosted Flakes.

Does anyone remember Ice Boxes. Ice would be delivered in an old panel truck for it. I remember getting our first electric refrigerator with the motor sitting on top.

Post made Sugar Crisps with Sugar Bear. Sugar Smacks was made by Kelloggs and had a clown, then Smaxey the Seal followed by Quick Draw McGraw. Kelloggs also made Sugar Pops and had Wild Bill, Jingles (Wagon Train) and Pete the Prarie Dog.

Kaboom the cleanser probably would taste just as good.  :D

So, is Tony the Tiger, Post or Kellogs?

Wild Bill Hickcox....Jingles was his sidekick, right?

Oops, you're right Deputy Marshal Jingles P. Jones (Andy Devine) was Wild Bills side kick (just looked it up to be sure).

Oh yea, my grandmother had one on her back porch.  The ice man would deliver a huge block of ice.  That ice box had big hinges on it and a latched handle.  She used to use an ice pick to chop up the ice.  I think she may have gotten rid of it when she got a new electric refrigerator.  I'm not remembering the motor on top.  I remember she had a very strange looking stove.  Maybe it was a wood burner.

How about coal furnaces and shoveling it into the furnace. The coal delivery person would dump it down a chute into the cellar coal bin.  Oh my goodness, was that stuff ever dirty.

How about the paper rags man.  He would come down the street in his horse drawn cart yelling, "paper rags".  He collected paper and rags and sold them, I guess.

And we can't forget about "streetcars".

We had a wood burning stove and got our first gas stove in 1953. It looked almost like the wood burner. Remember coal furnaces? ... 5:30 in the morning feeding and stoking one until the house got warm enough for Mom to get the younger ones up.

I don't remember any paper rags man and our town was to small for a street car. The street cars in the "big city" close to us was done away with in the late 1930s maybe early 40s and I didn't get to go there until 1959. My folks were pretty much home bodies until then as they ran a green house business.

Remember how all TV programs were preempted for the space shots, for the duration of the shot. All channels nothing but the space shot. Our eyes were glued to it at home, at work, in front of TVs in the stores. Now it seems to be not so important as all that.

You're right!  I had forgotten.  No, it doesn't seem to be as important..............guess the infancy of everything is what grabs our attention, after that, well, it's old news, I guess.

Our first gas stove didn't look like a wood burner.  It actually looked modern but it was A VERY HEAVY THING.

Remember the old toasters?  You had to put a slice of bread in each side and watch it very carefully.  Wow, the new "pop up" toasters were wonderful.  We were all fascinated that the toaster now watched itself. :)

Oh yeah, Roy Rogers used to be on TV on Saturday mornings.  My brother got up every Sat. morning at 6:00 to watch ALL the cowboy shows.  Couldn't get him up on school days at 7:00, though. ;D  I remember Roy, Dale, Pat (Ithink that was his name, Roy's sidekick) and Nelliebell (the jeep).  Both Roy and Dale were reborn Christians.  I watched them a few times on TBN.

The Mod Squad...............well, I just remember that Peggy Lipton was the lead female in that series.  Can't remember too much more.  She disappeared after that series ended.  Then, probably about 6 years ago, I saw her in a made for TV movie.  Haven't seen hide nor hair of her since.

Roy Rogers "King of the Cowboys". Born as Leonard Slye who started out in the  "Sons of the Pioneers".

Roy Rogers had many different sidekicks. Smiley Burnette as Frog Milhouse. Andy Devine as Cookie. Pat Brady as himself with Nellybelle.

I watched everyone of his shows if not the first run at least on reruns.

Pat Buttram was Gene Autry's sidekick that replaced Smiley Burnette. Smiley Burnette was also Frog Milhouse on Roy Rogers. Pat Buttrum also did a lot of various cartoon voices. He was somewhat like Andy Devine in that he had a voice that once you heard it you would never forget it. He also played on Green Acres as Mr Haney.

Anyone remember a show with Bobby Sherman?
Here come the brides?

 Game shows anyone?

Truth or consequences.
The dateing game

Wasn't that show called Seven Brides for Seven Brothers?

Remember the Pepsodent toothpaste jingle:  "You'll wonder where the yellow went, when you brush your teeth with pepsodent."

Does anyone remember when you could go down to the corner ice cream shop and get "real ice cream?"  Yum Yum, it was so good.  (I make ice cream at home with heavy cream and it tastes like ice cream used to).  There's probably a million calories in a scoop of that stuff. ;)  It's expensive to make.................a quart and a half costs about $6.50 if you use egg beaters instead of real raw eggs.  But, tis worth every cent.

We make real ice cream occassionally but it's with real eggs. :-X :-X   (Shhh! Don't tell my Heart Dr.)

We have an old fashioned type ice cream parlor here that makes their own ice cream, too. We go there once in a while, too.

I didn't watch "Here Comes the Bride". It came on when I first joined the Navy and I didn't see any TV during that time frame. I haven't seen the reruns either.

Here Comes The Brides.................that was from Bronzesnake.  I was wondering if it wasn't called Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.  I know there was a movie by that title though.  Maybe he's right about the title...........I dunno.

Your homemade ice cream............are you using the wooden bucket with the motor on the top that requires salt?  We used to have one of those and our ice cream was lousy.  Never could get it to turn out just right.  It did make 1 gallon at a time though.  I bought one of the new small 1 and 1/2 quart machines about 5 years ago.  It's so simple to use............no salt required.  They aren't expensive.......about $30.  You keep the bowl in the freezer and then when you want to make the ice cream you take it out of the freezer and pour in your cream, sugar, vanilla, salt, chocolate, eggs, etc.  Then you put a top on it (it has a paddle) and turn it on.  It takes about 12 minutes for soft serve.  If you want hard ice cream you just put it in the freezer till the next day or for several hours. It's soooo simple to use.

I just did a search on the net. Bobby Sherman showed in a TV series "Here Comes the Bride". Bobby and two other brothers were loggers in it. It ran from 1968 to 1970 right at the time I first joined the Navy.

The ice cream maker I use is an old wooden one but it has a metal bucket on the inside. It does have a motor on it. I couldn't use the old hand crank that was my mothers that my sister still has. I never use salt in the ice, just a lot of crushed ice. The recipe was my mothers. It uses whole cream not milk and not condensed milk. It takes about 45 mins and the ice cream comes out really solid.

That sounds like the one we had------------it had a metal bucket inside, too.  It came with a lid so that you could store it in the freezer in that same container.  We always used real cream too but the recipe said one had to put rock salt in the ice every so many minutes.  It was a real pain.  Think I just gave that away a couple of years ago.  Wish I had known it would have worked as well without the salt. That ice cream tasted like ice milk not ice cream.  It had tiny tiny ice crystals in it.  Even though it was electric, I seem to think it still had a hand crank.  I can't really remember because it wasn't used for years.

OK...........on the TV show.  I do think it was a spin off of the movie though.  I remember the guys (7 brothers) were loggers too.  They were always trying to impress the gals (7 brides) with rolling logs on water, etc.  That movie was a musical and I don't remember the big name stars in it...............I know several of them were great singers............seem to remember Gordon McCrea.  I'm not sure.

BTW........I copied the piece about the NASB.  Did you read it?

Title: Re:Old TV Shows Remembered

The trick to the Ice Cream maker was to use fine crushed ice with a little water if you didn't use rock salt and to increase the time of making it. The recipe was important too. The person at my childhood church that took over making ice cream for the yearly ice cream social used the wrong recipe and it came out tasting like ice milk and had the crystals in it.

My mothers recipe came from her grandma and originally required for straight cream from a Brown Swiss (cow that is). It is a lot richer than any cream you can get in the stores now.

I read the post you made on the NASB.

I buy organic milk and cream..................it's still pasturized though.  The cream your grandma got was "raw" cream...........the best.  The states are not allowed to sell raw milk or cream (most states).  It MUST be pasturized.  It has to be this way because of what happened in the 1800's, people dying from supposedly bacteria laden raw milk.  From what I've read, that wasn't so.  It was because people milked cow after cow after cow with dirty hands.  That's what caused all those deaths.  PR, I don't know the differences in cows ;D.  They all look pretty much the same to me.  I never did do any research on this.  I just know there are milking cows and eating cows ;D, black angus is one, I think.

I read your post today on the NASB and KJV comparison verses.  They mean exactly the same thing to me.  I think you thought same.  I think you'd like reading the NASB.

Title: Re:Old TV Shows Remembered
Post by: Soldier4Christ on August 04, 2005, 12:27:43 AM
I'll have to check out the NASB some more.

The milk my great grandmother used probably was raw milk. I used to get milk from my Aunt before she died. She had a Brown Swiss also. She pastuerized her own milk through a machine that would pasteurize and separate (milk from cream) it. It worked just as well as the raw cream.

A good thing with the Brown Swiss is it is a big cow. About two foot higher than the Jerseys (black and white seen on the computer commercials) and about a foot and a half larger than a black angus. Another thing is the Brown Swiss was bred through natural selection without a lot of cross breeding and inbreeding.

The Brown Swiss is a less popular milk cow because its production level is lower even though there is more cream per gallon. A brown swiss gives about one to one and half gallons per milking and the Jerseys usually put out up to 3 gallons.

Smiley Burnette
Gabby Hayes

Dub 'Cannonball' Taylor
'Fuzzy' St. John
Watchfob Jones
Max Terhune
Jimmie Dodd

and of course any true western fan should know:

Walter Brennan
Buddy Ebsen
Slim Pickens

How many of the two above lists had their own show?

Pastor Roger,

You asked a tough one, and I stretched my memory banks.  :D

I can't remember:

'Fuzzy' St. John
Watchfob Jones
Max Terhune
Jimmie Dodd

Maybe I'll remember them later. In thinking back about the ones who had their own show, "own show" might be a matter of interpretation. Many of them were main characters. I first thought of:

Walter Brennan - The Real McCoys
Buddy Ebsen - The Beverly Hillbillies

The ones I remember were some REAL CHARACTERS. That was a time when there were real laughs without anything dirty or vulgar.

Sister Chris,

YES, I definitely remember the cat's eye marbles. I also remember the quest for a good and unique shooter.

Those were the days when every kid in the neighborhood had to be called in for supper. My wife and I were laughing the other day about the fairly common practice of getting a load of topsoil for your yard. It was like a magnet in drawing kids to play on it. It's amazing how many things could be done with a load of dirt, so the parents usually left it for a couple of weeks. (Roads, forts, "King of the Mountain", castles, etc.)  :D

Life was simple, and the best things were usually free. If not, we didn't have any money and didn't worry about it for long.

I was just laughing a little bit and wondering if the younger people here have a clue about playing marbles. They would probably want to know if you use a joystick or a gamepad to play.  :D

I've been there, done that, and I wasn't very good at it. I was usually taken advantage of by a marble shark.   :D
Some of the are scratching, their heads over that one.  ;D

Hey..............remember the one's with a cat's eye in them?  I remember those very well because you would only get 1 or 2  in a new bag of marbles.

Oh.............that simple life.............sighing. :)

Now that brings back memories. My first solo road trip away from home was on that road from Illinois to my uncles home in Texas. They don't make roads like that anymore.

One of these days, and not much longer. I'll have to finish my trip, down the mother road. Illnois, is the last one to drive on.

Route 66 through Illinois is no longer known as Route 66. However you can still drive it from Chicago to Los Angeles if you know the route (with a few detours. the detours are on new freeways that are over the old road). There is a map with driving directions:

Misunderstanding there Pastor Roger. What I meant was Illinois is the only state I haven't been in on Route 66.

Route 66
By Bobby Troop

If you ever plan to motor west,
travel my way, take the highway that's the best.
Get your kicks on Route sixty-six.

It winds from Chicago to LA,
more than two thousand miles all the way.
Get your kicks on Route six-six.

Now you go through Saint Louis
Joplin, Missouri,
and Oklahoma City is mighty pretty.
You see Amarillo,
Gallup, New Mexico,
Flagstaff, Arizona.
Don't forget Winona,
Kingman, Barstow, San Bernardino.

Won't you get hip to this timely tip:
when you make that California trip
Get your kicks on Route sixty-six.
