Do you remember, "tuck, and duck"?
In my area it was "duck and cover". In the early 60’s I was a grade-schooler living on a ranch 20 miles west of Amarillo. Amarillo has 90% of the world’s supply of helium which made (makes?) it a ‘first strike’ target. I was a go-lucky kid but I remember the tense times – often the news guys on TV looked like they were going to cry… many, many folks were sure that the end was at hand.
We laugh at the naivety of “duck and cover” in the face of the pure force of a nuclear attack, but recent thought reveals that it would have actually saved lives. For instance, did any of you ever see the “duck and cover” film with the kids lying flat in the gutter when they heard the disaster siren? That would actually be a reasonable life-saving action if the explosion is curb-side and several miles away...
Maybe it’s time to take a fresh look at the things we used to do in the 60’s. Here in sunny CA, just as when I lived in Alaska, earthquake preparedness is a simple fact of everyday life. Maybe it’s time to start digging “root cellars” again…
But of course when this all comes about – the Christians who survive the nukes will still have the guillotine to contend with…
Now, THERE’S a cheery thought!
