Russia Working on Secret Weapons — Defense Minister

Created: 04.05.2005 12:38 MSK (GMT +3), Updated: 12:38 MSK

MosNews

Russia is working to create weapons that no other country possesses, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov said in an interview with the Rossiyskaya Gazeta daily.

“Many countries are working on…modern weapons systems, including us. Naturally, not a single partner or ally of ours knows anything about it and nor will they until they are tested,” he told the paper.

Ivanov said that modern Russia does not need the kind of army that the Soviet Union used to have. “We do not want and we will not be a scarecrow for the whole world,” he stressed.

In recent years Russia’s army has been reduced from more than three million servicemen to 1.2 million, and the military forces should be developed not by increasing the number of soldiers but by high-tech weapons, the minister said.

Russia yields to no one with regards to nuclear weapons, Ivanov believes. He explained that Moscow is not an aggressor as it was portrayed during the Cold War. However, although the possibility of a nuclear war is minimal, to ensure Russia’s security the development of nuclear weapons will not be halted, he stated.

He said that power is respected by everyone, and Russia has to be a powerful military state relative to its size. “Some say 200,000 (servicemen) would be enough, like in European countries. But let’s look at a map and compare their territory and their neighbors with ours. This is a geopolitical answer,” the minister said.

In Ivanov’s opinion, the armed forces should be modified depending on the kind of threats the world faces. After the end of the Cold War “the abruptness factor has increased many times in size”, and no one knows where the next local religious or ethnic conflict will arise, he said.

Putin Restoring Soviet System Says Former Russian PM

Created: 19.05.2005 16:58 MSK (GMT +3), Updated: 16:58 MSK, 17 hours 44 minutes ago

MosNews

President Putin is restoring the Soviet system with elements of capitalism, former Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov, who may run in the presidential elections of 2008, said at a press conference Thursday, Interfax reports.

Kasyanov’s reaction was prompted by the recent changes to the electoral system. The former PM said the new law is against the Russian Constitution, as it makes politics a monopoly of the current authorities and allows no alternative parties to enter the fray.

Moreover, the new law is against democracy and provides an opportunity for falsifying election results, Kasyanov said.

“It looks like the authorities are securing the possibility for falsification in future,” he was quoted by Intefax as saying.

Kasyanov did not make any official statements regarding his possible participation in the future presidential elections, but said “everything is possible”, Interfax added.

“If people have a need and desire that I run in the presidential elections, I will do so. If not, I will find other things to do,” he said.

Speaking about Mikhail Khodorkovsky’s trial, Kasyanov called it “a farce” and said such actions were inadmissible.

“My opinion is this: it is a demonstration that anyone can be treated in the same way,” Kasyanov said.

Khodorkovsky’s case has brought Russia to a critical point, and after the verdict is announced, the consequences may be negative and enduring, he added.

 [qoute]Wow, Roger, you ARE old![/qoute]

Only the body. Cheesy Cheesy

The "official" time frame for the Cold War is 1945-1991. I was born in 1951. The Cold War really escalated though in the early 1960s when I was in grade school.

You don't have any PhDs over 35?

They didn't call it that in my school but I do remember what it is. Hiding under your desk. (Like that would do any good) Maybe it was because the desks in my school had no room to hide under. They were the old cast iron type with a swivel chair attached in such a fashio you couldn't get under them.

I also remember the air raid drills where we all had to go into the service area under the new gym and sit on the cold damp cement floor down there.
