Anyone want to tell us about your hobbies?

 I collect vintage toy die cast cars. My favourites are the Corgi cars.
I have hundreads of die cast cars. Hotwheels, Corgi, Dinky, Matchbox and many others. My wife hates them!

I really look at them as beautiful works of art. Toy cars today are garbage compared with these models from the 50's and 60's.

 I thought it would be fun to show off a couple of my "babies" and some I'm looking to aquire.


 I have this model, but I don't have the box. The box and inserts add value to the car. This car as shown in the photo would sell from $350.00 to $500.00 U.S.

This Corgi Impalla State Police car is one I'm looking for. A perfect model with box and inserts will go for roughly $50.00 to $100.00

I posted this one for BEP!  





This one is another I'm after. It's a Commer Van, camera crew model from Corgi. made in the 60's. This van in excellent condition with box and inserts goes consistently for well over $1000.00!!



Here's one of the greats! I had this car when I was a young turk. It's the James Bond DB5 Astin Martin!!
This car has gadgets on it my friends! Can you flick a secret switch on your car which opens the roof and sends your annoying passenger flinging out? I doubt it! Can you push your front bumper pads in and have machine guns automatically appear through holes in the front bumper? NOT! Do you have a switch which raises a bullet proof shield that covers your rear window? You wish! This car has it all my envious friends!

Finally, the holy grail of Corgi cars, one all serious Corgi collecters drool over - Ladies and Gentlemen, the 1/24 scale 1960's first year issue model 267 Batmobile!!!



 This particular photo depics a car which is in fair condition without any box or inserts. This would run you from $100.00 to $200.00 a perfect example with box and iserts can be seen on my forum, which you can get to by visting my web site at  www.fifthday.2ya.com and sells for $1500.00 to $2000.00!!!!

With me the word hobbies is definitely plural. I have collected coffee cups from every state and every country that I have been to. I am missing one from the state of Washington II was broke when I was there) and missing one from Bahrain. I looked for one while I was in Bahrain but there wasn't any to be found.

I also collect eagle items, blankets, statues, etc. One of them that I have is a set of brass eagle bookends which is also part of my 1776 Bi-centenial collection that weighs 10 lbs each.

I also collect U. S. Navy memorabilia. This collection is about as complete as I want it to be except for a brass ships bell from any U.S Navy ship.

Now that I am not able to do much I do machine embroidery and make handmade quilts. So far I have made 4 eagle quilts, one with navy emblems, one for my granddaughter with Noahs Ark characters, one for my wife with an angel silhouette, and 5 with old fashioned style patterns (wedding ring, around the world, etc).

I made two sets of curtains with embroidered Navy emblems on them.

It all keeps me busy so I am not going stir crazy.

I collect, coffee cups, and hot wheels. I have several hot wheels, that were never released to the public. Way back in 1968-1970, my dad worked for mattel.

I have a coffee cup, from Mockba (Moscow) celebrating there 850th anniv. back in 1997. All-in-all, I have over 100 coffee cups. I need to clean alot of them, cause of the soot. They were in my bedroom, when the fire happened.

It's odd that you mentioned car collecting. I don't do it, but I helped my son start a collection for Christmas one year. I don't know the scale, but we made a small fortune on the first purchase. I bought a Dale Earnhart set about 6 months before his death, brand new and in the box. I thought the cars were very expensive, about $40 each. A friend owns the specialty store that sold them to me, and he wanted them back real bad for 10 times what I paid for them. I have no idea what they are worth now, but my son isn't selling, and the price is still going up.

   I also pay for the hobbies of other family members. My hobbies don't cost any money except for a single computer that works. I might add that my son-in-law now pays for the hobbies of my daughter.

I did have a baseball collection when I was a kid - the type that came with bubble-gum. I'd sure like to find it, but I'm afraid it's at the landfill. I could buy a house with what that collection is now worth. I've got a good idea. I'll sell it to you at a bargain price - you just have to find it.

My oldest brother collects Tonka toys. He has an original 1947 Tonka truck that our granpa got him as a christmas gift. All total he has about 250 of them. 15 of them are prior to 1950 that was his as a brand new toy.

The company that made the first Tonkas used to make shovels and rakes, etc. He has 2 of the shovels, 3 rakes and one hoe that he inherited from our grandfather.

He also collects antique pocket knives. I don't know what all he has in them but I do know he has at least one that was made in the mid 1700's.

This sounds like a fun thread.  I like the car pics too.   BEP sounds your son could probably make fortune some day on those cars too!   I'm afraid my hobbies cash flow is going in the wrong direction  


I've got quite a few hobbies.  Too many in fact!  

RC/planes and heli's - very fun!

Chess - took this very seriously for a time, but haven't played much as of late.

Photography - Not really great at it, but I still like trying.

Astronomy - another fun hobby, observing Gods great universe.

Storm Chasing - A seasonal hobby, comes around every spring.

Music/Guitar - Haven't touched this one in a while, but have been playing for 20+ years.

Ham Radio - Storm Chasing lead me to this one...they go hand in hand, but Amateur radio is a pretty nifty hobby all of its own.


I've tried to think of ways of combining all of these into ONE hobby, and thought....

If I could mount a camera on my RC plane, fly it into a tornado while soloing on the guitar, "really feeling it" by looking at it through a telescope, I just just might check mate a super cell, and change my name to....

My husband's hobbies are tinkering with computers and collecting DVD's.   It is good we don't collect other things because there is just not enough room.

Hobbies are great because it is much better to come home and have something to work on than just watch tv all the time.  Sometimes the supplies for hobbies can be expensive but some wonderful gifts can be created.

I totally agree with you that hobbies can give us more productive time than TV.
I am disabled, and I found myself glued to the TV, I had to find soemthing better to do - something to keep my mind occupied. I started to paint landscapes in oil and I love it. I've been painting for about eight or so years now.

Then I got into die cast toy cars. I had loads of them when I was a boy. My depated brother Jim and I spent many quality hours with them, so it brings back some very joyous memories. I began collecting the Corgi cars which my Grandpa brought me when he moved in with us from England. I remembered each and every car I had, and I am attempting to get them all. I also have an extensive Hotwheels collection.

I came across some web sites that have step by step instruction as to restoreing and or customizing die cast cars. There are places to get all the replacement parts you could ever need. This is my next hobby!   The cars are totally dismantled - stripped of paint - body work - repaint - repair and re assembled!

I don't spend a lot of money on my cars. Some people spend hundreads even thousands on a single car!! My top linit is $25 and that's pushing it. So now that I can make the old look new again, I'll have a fantastic collection in no time!!

I actually managed to buy a Corgi 1/24 scale Batmobile off e-bay acouple of days ago. I never dreamed I would get one for so cheap! Only $20 !!! This is a steal! you hear of people finding treasure at auctuions and getting them for next to nothing, but e-bay?? It's in fair condition, and I have seen batmobiles in much worse shape go for $90 to $100 these cars have sold for up to a couple of thousand! mind you, that's in perfect condition with all origional boxing, instructions and inserts etc. One went for $1500 the other night!

I am going to restore this car.

Yes, that does look cool. Do you mind telling me which program you used to make that? I'm playing with several freeware graphics programs now, trying to avoid spending more money for software (i.e. Paint Shop). If you can do that with text, I'm sure that many other interesting graphics would be possible.

Hey BEP definately hang onto the Dale Earnhart stuff, you're right, that stuff is pure gold! I have a 1/64 scale stock car series which is still unopened on the bubblecard, and comes with a Dale Earnhart trading card. It's funny, I also bought this car from a friend who owns a collectables store!

The 1/64 scale is the same size as the Hotwheels cars. If your sons car is bigger, then it's most likely a 1/24 scale which is about 41/2" to 6" long or close to it. It might also be the larger 1/18 scale, which would be about 11" to 17" long.

 The baseball cards you had would be worth a small fortune Tommy...ummm, where did you say that dump was!

 My sons and I also collect hockey cards, we have a couple of thousand of them. When I bought the boys their first box, it was at a time when cards were not popular - these things swing back and forth on a popularity pendulum, and I got three complete sets of each NHL team I can't recall the exact price but it was cheap! I can't afford expensive stuff!
I also have several autographed pucks by some Maple Leafs of old. I have four pucks signed by Johnny Bower (my favourite all time Leaf) Three pucks signed by Wendel Clark ( second all time favourite) Three by Paul Henderson (he's a Christian, but he's extreemly rude!) three by Rick Vaive and four by Eddie Shack. I have an NHL Golie Stick signed by Grant Fuhr some Team Canada bobble Heads - the list goes on and on. It's a collection that has taken many years to accumulate. My most prized collection is still my goofy little die cast cars though.
