ANDERSON, S.C. (March 23) - A 7-year-old boy was apparently kidnapped from a Kmart as he looked at video games while family members were shopping elsewhere in the store, authorities said Tuesday.
Hunter Allen Thompson disappeared Monday night from the store in Anderson, in extreme northwestern South Carolina near the Georgia line, the State Law Enforcement Division said.
Officers are reviewing video tapes from Kmart and neighboring stores. ''We don't know how he got out of the store,'' Anderson County Sheriff's Capt. John Skipper said.
Authorities issued an Amber Alert, and said there is nothing in the boy's background to indicate he might have run away.
''We're treating this as an abduction at this time,'' Skipper said.
Hunter is white, with brown hair and blue eyes, and was wearing a green hooded sweat shirt, dark jeans and tennis shoes, state police said.
An Amber Alert for a missing child goes to media outlets and lottery retailers and activates traffic advisory signs along highways. The program is named for Amber Hagerman, a 9-year-old Texas girl who was abducted and killed in 1996.
