Eartha Kitt, dies at 81

NEW YORK (AP) — A family friend says Eartha Kitt, a sultry singer, dancer and actress who rose from South Carolina cotton fields to become an international symbol of elegance and sensuality, has died. She was 81.

Andrew Freedman says Kitt died Thursday of colon cancer and was recently treated at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York.

Kitt, a self-proclaimed "kitten" famous for her catlike purr, was one of America's most versatile performers, winning two Emmys and getting a third nomination. She also was nominated for two Tony Awards and a Grammy.

I remember her in the role of Catwoman, in the old Batman series. That was in the mid 60's for you kids.

I do remember her, but I think it was from old movies. I still think that the old movies are better than the ones made today, and nearly all of them would get a "G" rating by the standards of today. So, I would probably be remembering several old movies from the 40s and 50s she appeared in.

I clearly remember the name as being very popular but I don't remember much of anything about her or what she did.

I remember her from Batman, and the song, "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes."
