Joy the Duty of the Believer

Joy to be Sought Through Christ

Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full. John 16:24

Dark and cheerless is the morn,
Unaccompanied by thee;
Joyless is the day's return,
Till thy mercy's beams we see:
Day-spring from on high, be near;
Day-star, in our hearts appear.

Believer's Joy Is Satisfying

Blessed is the man whom thou choosest, and causest to approach unto thee, that he may dwell in thy courts: we shall be satisfied with the goodness of thy house, even of thy holy temple. Psalm 65:4

These are the joys which satisfy,
And sanctify the mind;
Which make the spirit mount on high,
And leave the world behind.

Believer's Joy Is Abiding

These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full. John 15:11

Art thou not mine, my living Lord?
And can my hope, my comfort die,
Fix'd on thine everlasting word--
The word that built the earth and sky.

Believer Has Joy in Death

Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: for mine eyes have seen thy salvation. Luke 2:29, 30

When we have number'd all our years,
And stand, at length, on Jordan's brink;
Though the flesh fail with mortal fears,
Oh! let not then the spirit sink:
But strong in faith, and hope, and love,
Plunge through the stream to rise above.

Heaven the Consummation of Joy

Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy Lord. Matt. 25:21

Rest in thy Saviour's joy.

Believer Forewarned of Sorrow

These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. John 16:33

The path of sorrow, and that path alone,
Leads to the land where sorrow is unknown.
No traveller e'er reached that bless'd abode,
Who found not thorns and briars in his road.

Sources of Sorrow -- Loss of Divine Favour

Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free Spirit. Psalm 51:12

Ah! why, by passing clouds oppress'd,
Should vexing thoughts distract thy breast?
Turn, turn to Him, in every pain,
Whom never suppliant sought in vain.

Sources of Sorrow -- Indwelling Sin

I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. Rom. 7:23

Nature may raise her fleshly strife,
Reluctant to the heavenly life:
But grace omnipotent at length
Shall arm the saint with saving strength,
Through the sharp war with aids attend,
And his last conflict sweetly end.

Sources of Sorrow -- A Deceitful Heart

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? Jer. 17:9

With flowing tears, Lord, I confess,
My folly and unstedfastness;
When shall this heart more stable be,
Fix'd by thy grace alone on thee?

2Co 11:3  But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.
2Co 11:4  For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.


Yes, Lord give me that old time Gospel. The Gospel of the Bible is just as relevant today as it was in the time of Paul. There are those coming out today that claim new revelations, a change in the Gospel. We have been forewarned of these and told not to take heed of them. These individuals bend toward "itchy ears", telling them what is pleasing to them and their desires.

We must be born again, not according to mans word but by the word of God. This is the word that last forever, unchanged (incorruptible). It is this word that the Gospel comes to us and not by new revelations of men.


1Pe 1:23  Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.
1Pe 1:24  For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:
1Pe 1:25  But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.


Rom 10:9  That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
Rom 10:10  For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Rom 10:13  For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Sources of Sorrow -- Ingratitude of the Ungodly

They that render evil for good are mine adversaries; because I follow the thing that good is. Forsake me not, O Lord: O my God, be not far from me. Psalm 38:20, 21

If wounded love my bosom swell,
Deceived by those I prized too well;
He shall his pitying aid bestow,
Who felt on earth severer woe:
At once betray'd, denied, or fled,
By those who shared his daily bread.

Sources of Sorrow -- Reproach of the World

Let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach. Heb. 13:13

If on my face, for thy dear name,
Shame and reproach shall be,
I'll hail reproach, and welcome shame,
If thou remember me.

Sources of Sorrow -- Persecution

Though I walk in the midst of trouble, thou wilt revive me: thou shalt stretch forth thine hand against the wrath of mine enemies, and thy right hand shall save me. Ps. 138:7

Man may trouble and distress me,
'Twill but drive me to thy breast;
Life with trials hard may press me,
Heaven will bring me sweeter rest.

Sources of Sorrow -- Earthly Losses and Bereavements

Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord. Job 1:21

Oh! blessed be the hand that gave;
Still blessed when it takes:
Blessed be he who smites to save,
Who heals the heart he breaks
Perfect and true are all his ways
Whom heaven adores, and earth obeys.
