How's your apples this year brother?
My sister just brought me a little over a bushel of Johnathon sweets. They are pretty riddled with the Codling Moth larvae and the larvae of some kind of fly.

About the same as your sisters brother.

I don't get it, but I do know that those moth and fly larvae are high protein and shouldn't be wasted. Eat 'um up. YUM! You can have my share, too. I'm not quite that hungry.

Well brother I've had a few folks here today already. They are picking the apples, and putting them in a burn barrel. That is the only way, I know of to get rid of the larvae inside. If I don't, I will have a bumper crop of larvae next year.

There is a number of things that you can do to get rid of a lot of them. Picking up all the apples off the ground and destroying them along with all the infested apples is just one of the ways.
Just before the larvae leaves the apples to go make their cocoons for the winter wrap cardboard or burlap or simialar material around the trees in various places ( main trunk and several bigger branches). Then later remove the cardboard and burn it and crush/remove all the cocoons that hid under the cardboard. check under the loose bark also because the larvae love to make their cocoons there also.
I have also found that putting a deep container with apple juice or watered down apple sauce in and around the tree before the eggs are layed that it helps because the eggs and newly hatched larvae will be attracted to it and will get stuck and drown, leaving the apples alone.
Other than spending a whole lot of money on moth/fly traps and other insecticides that is all I know to do to get them under control.
My sister usually does all that and comes out with some great apples but this year she has been sick, her husband is getting up there in age and can't do those things anymore and their son that usually helps them out is in Iraq.

I just came back in from burning apples. 9 burn barrels full of apples, and those on the ground. I always pick up apples that fall, to the ground.

Good morning All,
Haven't been around much. Glad to see Brother Bob is up and around.
Sipping a cup and heading out to work on my roof.
3 layers of shingles and a layer of cedar shakes have to come off, then sheet the whole thing........this is the worst roof I have ever been on.
10 pitch so I have to have my harness on all the time.
Catch ya all later

Hey Gary, long time no see, we've missed you. Glad to see that your roof is under repair, yes it is hard work, but I know it is well worth it. Hope to see more of you at the forum. Take care and be careful on that roof.

It's great to see you again brother. You have been missed.
Four layers??!! That would be a mess. Yes a 10 pitch is pretty steep. Please do be very careful up there brother.
