Thank you, sincereheart.
This is a good wakeup call. As Christians we will be tempted to do many things in His name. The medieval Crusaders are a great, looming example in our present situation with Moslems--they DID commit heinous attrocities--with crosses emblazoned on their tunics and shields!
"And he said, 'Take heed that you are not led astray; for many will come in my name, saying, 'I am he!' and 'The time is at hand!' Do not go after them.'" Luke 21:8
But at the same time, we must remember that,
"For the time has come for judgement to begin with the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the end of those who do not obey the gospel of God? And, 'If the righteous man is scarecely saved, where will the impious and sinner appear?'" I Peter 4:17
So on the one hand there will be those who will mislead us; we must not fall for that.
But on the other hand, when others are misled, as this fellow, we will be blamed for it--by association. Jesus was asscoiated with criminals and crucified therewith.
So while we ourselves must be blameless, we will likely nevertheless find outselves being blamed and any number of associations.
This is why many fall away, and will fall away:
"After this many of his disciples drew back and no longer went about with him." (John 6:66)
The price of defamation is too high.
But, as Peter says, when this happens, "Therefore let those who suffer according to God's will do right and entrust their souls to a faithful Creator." I Peter 4:19
We are all under judgement, the African fellow included. He just apparently lost his first love--as would be easy to do for any of us.
