There is a movement by the National Council On Bible Curriculum In Public Schools to get the Bible back onto the curriculum list of our public schools. It has succeeded in doing so in at least 300 different schools nationwide so far. Following is a letter from the President of this organization.


Dear Friend,

A program is underway to serve the public through educational efforts concerning a First Amendment right and religious freedom issue. This is to bring a state certified Bible course (elective) into the public high schools nationwide.

The curriculum for the program shows a concern to convey the content of the Bible as compared to literature and history. The program is concerned with education rather than indoctrination of students. The central approach of the class is simply to study the Bible as a foundation document of society, and that approach is altogether appropriate in a comprehensive program of secular education.

The world is watching to see if we will be motivated to impact our culture, to deal with the moral crises in our society, and reclaim our families and children.

Please help us to restore our religious and civil liberties in this nation.

While President of the United States, Thomas Jefferson was elected the first president of the Washington, D.C. public school board, which used the Bible as a reading text in the classroom.
There was a secular study done by the American Political Science Review on the political documents of the Founding era, which was 1760-1805.

This study found that 94% of the documents that went into the Founding ERA were based on the Bible, and of that 34% of the contents were direct quotations from the Bible.

88% of students nationwide are educated in the public school system.

that the Bible is worthy of study for its literary and historic

A secular organization has been promoting a “World Religions” course, which teaches how other faiths interpret and critique the Christian Bible. These groups want school districts nationwide to believe that this is the only legal way to teach the Bible.

WHAT IS THE BEST APPROACH TO TEACHING THE BIBLE IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS?

APPROACH #1

THE NATIONAL COUNCIL ON BIBLE CURRICULUM IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS (NCBCPS)

The NCBCPS has had great success in returning the Bible to the classroom in a traditional, time-tested approach. Utilizing curriculum that has been in use for over 40 years, the NCBCPS elective course materials have been adopted by over 275 school districts in 35 states, and the numbers are steadily growing. The curriculum has never been
legally challenged. Since 1995, over 170,000 students have
taken the NCBCPS course on high school campuses. The curriculum is popular with both teachers and students, and it has been adopted to date nationwide in 92% of the school districts where it has been presented. The NCBCPS uses the Bible as its textbook (The King James Version is recommended) and, through a study of the Old and
New Testaments, focuses on its comparisons with, and impact upon, history and literature.

Following constitutional guidelines, the course emphasizes
that the Bible is the foundation document of our society and
is the single most influential book in shaping western culture,
our laws, our history and even our speech. It is a lesson in
America’s heritage.


APPROACH #2

“COMPARATIVE RELIGIONS”
Conscientious citizens should be wary of another approach to reintroducing the Bible in public schools. This second
approach seeks to implement Bible courses in the context of
world religions; subjecting the Bible to inter-faith criticism,
judging it by group consensus, and molding it to fit politically
correct standards. Such courses tend to promote faiths such
as Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and Taoism. While these
courses are also legal, they teach comparable religions rather
than a true Bible curriculum.

Who is behind this movement?

Some of the most ardent supporters of this second approach, more accurately described as a “Comparative Religions” course rather than a true “Bible Curriculum,” are groups and individuals with controversial pasts and questionable motives. Among the most troubling are:

Headed by the former director of the radical Americans United for the Separation of Church and State Research Foundation, who is also a board member of *The Pluralism Project. The Freedom Forum and its leaders consistently support controversial liberal causes.

This group is dedicated to the rejection of absolute truths,
the advancement of a “new world order”, and the blending
of all religions into one. Among its board members is a leading Wiccan witch who authored a popular book advocating contemporary Paganism along with a leader of the
Freedom Forum/First Amendment Center.

This group is closely allied with and even more radical than
the ACLU. PFAW openly advocates for such radical liberal
causes as homosexual rights and the desecration of the
American flag.

The Bible course curriculum has been voted into 312 school districts in 37 states. 92% of school boards that have been approached with this to date, have voted to implement it. It is not just in the Bible belt, but it has been voted into school districts from Alaska and California, straight across the board to Pennsylvania and Florida. 175,000 students have already taken our course.
