appropriate and has declared: “It certainly may be said
that the Bible is worthy of study for its literary and historic
qualities. Nothing we have said…indicates that such
study of the Bible or of religion, when presented objectively
as part of a secular program of education, may not
be effected consistently with the first Amendment.” See

Epperson v. Arkansas, 393U.S. 97 (1968); Stone v.

WHAT IS THE BEST APPROACH TO TEACHING THE BIBLE IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS?
APPROACH #1
THE NATIONAL COUNCIL ON BIBLE CURRICULUM IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS (NCBCPS)
The NCBCPS has had great success in returning the Bible to the classroom in a traditional, time-tested approach. Utilizing curriculum that has been in use for over 40 years, the NCBCPS elective course materials have been adopted by over 275 school districts in 35 states, and the numbers are steadily growing. The curriculum has never been
legally challenged. Since 1995, over 170,000 students have
taken the NCBCPS course on high school campuses. The curriculum is popular with both teachers and students, and it has been adopted to date nationwide in 92% of the school districts where it has been presented. The NCBCPS uses the Bible as its textbook (The King James Version is recommended) and, through a study of the Old and
New Testaments, focuses on its comparisons with, and impact upon, history and literature.
Following constitutional guidelines, the course emphasizes
that the Bible is the foundation document of our society and
is the single most influential book in shaping western culture,
our laws, our history and even our speech. It is a lesson in
America’s heritage.
APPROACH #2
“COMPARATIVE RELIGIONS”
Conscientious citizens should be wary of another approach to reintroducing the Bible in public schools. This second
approach seeks to implement Bible courses in the context of
world religions; subjecting the Bible to inter-faith criticism,
judging it by group consensus, and molding it to fit politically
correct standards. Such courses tend to promote faiths such
as Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and Taoism. While these
courses are also legal, they teach comparable religions rather
than a true Bible curriculum.
Who is behind this movement?
Some of the most ardent supporters of this second approach, more accurately described as a “Comparative Religions” course rather than a true “Bible Curriculum,” are groups and individuals with controversial pasts and questionable motives. Among the most troubling are:
THE FREEDOM FORUM/FIRST AMENDMENT CENTER:
Headed by the former director of the radical Americans United for the Separation of Church and State Research Foundation, who is also a board member of *The Pluralism Project. The Freedom Forum and its leaders consistently support controversial liberal causes.

* THE PLURALISM PROJECT:
This group is dedicated to the rejection of absolute truths,
the advancement of a “new world order”, and the blending
of all religions into one. Among its board members is a leading Wiccan witch who authored a popular book advocating contemporary Paganism along with a leader of the
Freedom Forum/First Amendment Center.

This group is closely allied with and even more radical than
the ACLU. PFAW openly advocates for such radical liberal
causes as homosexual rights and the desecration of the
American flag.
