How Much does a Prayer Weigh?

Louise Redden, a poorly dressed lady with a look of defeat on her face, walked into a grocery store. She approached the owner of the store in a most humble manner and asked if he would let her charge a few groceries. She softly explained that her husband was very ill and unable to work, they had seven children and they needed food.

John Longhouse, the grocer, scoffed at her and requested that she leave his store. Visualizing the family needs, she said: "Please, sir! I will bring you the money just as soon as I can."

John told her he could not give her credit, as she did not have a charge account at his store. Standing beside the counter was a customer who overheard the conversation between the two. The customer walked forward and told the grocer that he would stand good for whatever she needed for her family.

The grocer said in a very reluctant voice, "Do you have a grocery list? Louise replied, "Yes sir". "O.K." he said, "put your grocery list on the scales and whatever your grocery list weighs, I will give you that amount in groceries."

Louise, hesitated only a moment with a bowed head, then she reached into her purse and took out a piece of paper and scribbled something on it. She then laid the piece of paper on the scale carefully with her head still bowed. The eyes of the grocer and the customer showed amazement when the scales went down and stayed down.

The grocer, staring at the scales, turned slowly to the customer and said begrudgingly, "I can't believe it." The customer smiled and the grocer started putting the groceries on the other side of the scales. The scale did not balance so he continued to put more and more groceries on them until the scales would hold no more.

The grocer stood there in utter disgust. Finally, he grabbed the piece of paper from the scales and looked at it with greater amazement. It was not a grocery list, it was a prayer which said: "Dear Lord, You know my needs and I am leaving this in Your hands."

The grocer gave her the groceries that he had gathered and stood in stunned silence. Louise thanked him and left the store. The customer handed a fifty-dollar bill to the grocer and said, "It was worth every penny of it."

It was sometime later that the grocer discovered the scales were broken; therefore, only God knows how much a prayer weighs.

Whether the story is true or not.................we serve an awesome God.  I wouldn't doubt that it IS true.

This story reminds me of my mom who said she really believed God multiplied food on the supper table at times when she didn't think there'd be enough.  She was very serious.  Our family did go through some lean times but God always provided what was needed.

If this story was made up then it was made up based on true events. God keeps His promise to us. The story of the fishes and loaves is not a fictional story.

There has been many times that my family has experienced the Hand of God both in receiving and in giving.

One instance I had lost a job due to the company going out of business. The alternator quite working on my car. I had no job offers even though I had put in many, many applications for about a month. We were down to nothing but popcorn to eat for two days. We fed our kids the last of the popcorn at night the second day of it. I planned to walk the 30 miles the next morning to the nearest town where I might be able to get some temporary help and to check on some jobs I had applied for.

That morning while I prepared for the long walk there was a knock on the door. When I opened the door there was a women that I had never met that had three large boxes sitting on my porch. These boxes were full of food. Enough for my family for two weeks. She said that she didn't know why but felt led by the Lord to stop there and give us that food.

My wife and I talked with her for awhile. She asked about our car and I told her it was broke down and needed a part I didn't have. She said she didn't know anything about cars but there was parts in her car trunk and if one of them was what I needed I could have it.

Now figure the odds of her just happening to have an alternator that would fit my very car. She did have one and it worked just great. My wife had told her that I was looking for work but had not found anything yet. She said she had a friend that was in desperate need of a right hand man for home remodeling. She gave me the address and told me to be there the next morning at 7 AM. I showed up and was put to work immediately.

To this day I have never seen this lady again and the man that hired me said he didn't know who it could be.

Brothers and sisters, the Lord does take care of us and sometimes he uses us to help take care of others if we but listen.

What a wonderful testimony to our Father.  Don't ya just love to see Him do what he said He'd do?  This is a beautiful story for your kids to remember, PR.  What a legacy to leave them!!  I've heard similar stories.................not a whole bunch but I have heard of people so much in love with our heavenly Father that they say, "I just can't wait to see what He's going to do next."  They're so excited about Him.  It's really contagious to be around people like that.

Hey PR........write down that story.  Put it in your bible......tape it in there!

Even though my kids were very young at the time, they all remember this and more just as if it happened just yesterday. Any time things get just a little bit tough for them they bring it up again.

Brothers and Sisters,

The original post came from my aunt, and I posted it as I got it in email. From my own personal experiences, I know that many stories like this are true in my own life. God does hear our prayers.

I know some lost people who make fun of prayer, but I also know some lost people who show the proper respect and pay attention when prayer is offered. I've always thought that those who showed respect were either about to make a decision for Christ or they were at least wondering if Jesus Christ is real.

I've had some folks ask me why I don't pray for a million dollar house and a fancy car. I guess this really shows how little the world knows about prayer.

Love In Christ,
Tom

Hebrews 11:1-3 ASV  Now faith is assurance of things hoped for, a conviction of things not seen.  For therein the elders had witness borne to them.  By faith we understand that the worlds have been framed by the word of God, so that what is seen hath not been made out of things which appear.

Amen Brother Tom.

Jam 4:3  Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.

God promised to meet our needs not to meet our worldly desires.

I don't think the story is true. But I like it anyway, and I wouldn't say its impossible...
