Ex 20:7
7 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
KJV
This should be simple
,Should not cause any division
What does this verse mean to you?

Falsely, not true to His authority. Anything in His name that He does not approve of. A temporal calling, not spiritual as God is Spirit.

Thanks for your responces. I agree,
Here are my thoughts...
To take His name in vain would be to claim His fatherhood, when one is not His child.

And just as adultery can be committed in one’s mind – so can the taking of His name in vain.
Only Jesus was able to keep all of the Father’s commandments.
Praise Jesus for His grace.
Follow Him to salvation.

In vain: to no avail, without consequence.

Yes.
Psalms 11;9.
"He sent redemption unto his people: he hath commanded his covenant for ever: holy and reverend is his name."
So many of us who preach wear "reverend" as a title. Is that vain or what?

I believe that it means using His name in an empty manner.Like saying "Oh Lord" or "Oh God",when you
are not talking to Him,as if you are saying "Oh goodness"
is using it in vain, because you are using it in an empty manner.
The term Reverend means "to be revered" & there
is only ONE who is to be revered.
Yours in Yeshua,
