A chronological timeline of expeditions & sightings

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)--The search for Noah's Ark is by no means a new enterprise. Ron Stewart, author of "Noah's Ark: A Scientific Look, Past And Future," has documented more than 100 expeditions and Ark sightings, dating back as far as 2500 BC. Among the most notable recordings through 1990:

BC 475 -- A Chaldean priest reported the Ark's remains could be seen at the bottom of a mountain glacier.

30 -- The Egyptian historian Hieronimus said the remains of the Ark could be seen on Ararat.

AD 50 -- In the first century after Christ, historians Nicholas of Damascus and Flavius Josephus both told Noah's story in a way that agreed with the biblical account; both also reported that the remains of the Ark were still preserved in their time.

560 -- St. Isadore reported that the wood of the Ark could be seen on the mountain.

620 -- Byzantine Emperor Heraclius was reported to have climbed Ararat and seen the Ark after conquering the territory.

1269 -- Explorer Marco Polo reported finding the Ark after a three-day climb in "the snowy reaches of a very high mountain" -- at the bottom of the summit, not at the peak.

1647 -- Explorer Adam Olerius reported seeing the petrified remains of the Ark.

1829 -- Frederick Parrot reported seeing wood relics made from the Ark at the base of Mt. Ararat in a cathedral that was destroyed in an earthquake in 1840.

1832-1850 -- Multiple expeditions launched by Turkey, Russia and England failed to find the Ark.

1856 -- Two atheist British scientists climbed Ararat to disprove the existence of the Ark, but reported finding a "chest-like" shape made of petrified wood at 15,000 feet on the northeast side of Ararat. Efforts to burn the Ark reportedly failed because the wood was petrified.

1883 -- The Turkish government reported that an expedition located the Ark at 14,000 feet and saw animal cages and stalls.

1887 -- Indian explorer John Nouri made three expeditions, during which he claimed to have located the Ark -- and recommended removing it for the 1900 World's Fair.

1917 -- Photos and measurements of the Ark reportedly were taken by a Russian military expedition -- but were lost when Czar Nicholas was overthrown.

1945 -- Turkish soldier claimed to have photographed the Ark from an airplane.

1948 -- A Turkish farmer reported seeing a boxlike structure above 11,000 feet on Ararat.

1949 -- Aerial photograph recorded a formation on the mountain that resembles a ship, with dimensions that fit the biblical account of the Ark.

1952 -- Pilot claimed military took pictures of the Ark at 12,000 feet.

1990 -- Laser enhancement of satellite photo reportedly clarified a boxlike shape, broken in half.

I'm sorry, I meant one of those where you can "scan and pan" type. I have seen still photos of satellite images but for the most part they weren't to clear. The scan and pan type sights I have found so far don't cover that area.

It's kinda like looking at pictures of bigfoot and UFOs.

You hear about a "picture", then - after titillating anticipation - it turns out to be a grainy shadow that could be a picture of the 'fuzz' on a nonreception TV channel.

Not that I'm trying to make any correlation.

As an engineer I enjoy speculation concerning the structure and seaworthiness of the ark.  One note about the above website is their discussion of what a seaworthy ark would have looked like – and I can’t argue with their reasoning.  

Even though God could have told Noah to take his family and all the animals and go stand on a big rock (He IS GOD, after all – He could have made a rock float), God chose to have Noah build a ship.  I have to believe it would have been a VERY seaworthy vessel – a perfect design – a design by God!  Maybe that’s where my whole fascination about the ark has its roots.  “Designed by God”.  That, my friends, is WAY cool.  (Of course – EVERYTHING is designed by God – but you get my drift.)  For instance, I’d love to see how God had Noah fasten the joints from the hull ribbing to the keel timbers.  What did Noah use to waterproof (seal) the joints?  
Little "sink or swim" things like that...

While I am not an engineer I was an electrical and building contractor. As such I dabbled a bit in the engineer area so I can appreciate your interest in the design of Noahs Ark as it intrigues me also.

I was just reading the site you posted earlier today but haven't finished it yet.

As far as I'm concerned it has already been found. A Christian brother who has gone on to be with the Lord, found it, Check his website which is being maintained by his wife and children.

Check out his other finds. He has quite a story about the Ark of the covenant that'll blow you away. Apparently he found it in Jeremiah's grotto. Or rather, he was allowed to see it as some rabbis who went to retrieve were found stone cold dead in the tunnel on the way. This is his most intriguing adventure if you ask me. Especially the test about the blood he found. Too bad he gave that video tape to the angel, but it was necessary to preserve the resting place of the Ark. Sigh!

There's no doubt in my mind he found the Exodus crossing point, as well as very strong evidence of Sodom and Gomorrah. I've seen the "balls of sulphur" he found used in another program about the doomed cities. Sure would be nice to know what happened to Lot's wife's pillar. Apparently in Jesus' time, you could still see it.

Careful. While you may not agree doctrinally, I guarantee you this guy loved Jesus just as much as anyone. And his motivation for what he did was to provide scientific proof of the historical accuracy of the Bible.

There are plenty of dissenting opinions on Wyatt and his studies/work, such as http://www.isidore-of-seville.com/noah-ark/10.html, and I believe, as thinking folks, we should take them all into account and let Jesus lead us to the truth.  But even the above website says ‘don’t believe me – I’m only human, too’.

Concerning Seventh Day Adventists (SDA) one of the most comprehensive studies of Revelation I’ve ever attended (back in 1983, in Anchorage, AK, “Revelation Seminars”) is hosted by the SDA.  Their RS series has been drawing plenty of folks for at least 30 years.  It is great stuff taught directly from the KJV.

I do have some doctrinal differences, as you say – particularly concerning the SDA’s estimation of hell and the 144,000.  But I have some great personal friends affiliated with the SDA and I certainly expect to see them in heaven.

ZakDar – I read about Wyatt’s exploits searching for the Ark of the Covenant.  Sure is interesting – particularly how ‘James’ ran from the site in fright never to return.  What was THAT all about!

Careful. While you may not agree doctrinally, I guarantee you this guy loved Jesus just as much as anyone. And his motivation for what he did was to provide scientific proof of the historical accuracy of the Bible.

I have a video by Larry Williams and Bob Cornuke which documents there amazing discoveries. This is a fantastic video, and really convinced me that they had actually found all these amazing things, which is something, because I am very skeptical.

The video has some actual footage of the various sites they were at. It would be very hard for even a non believer to disregard this stuff, they would be forced to admit that some of the accounts of the Exodus can be corroborated at the exact locations the bible says they occured, and exactly as the bible describes them.
