The opposite of edification is the A.C.L.U. (anti Christian lawyer’s union)
Well, Let’s define edify:
Thayer’s lexicon says:
Edify- oikodomeo, also oikodomos (Acts 4:11)-
1) to build a house, to erect a building:
a) to build (up from the foundation)
b) to restore by building, to rebuild, to repair
2) metaphorically:
a) to found, to establish
b) to promote growth in Christian wisdom, affection, grace, virtue, holiness, or blessedness
c) to grow in wisdom and piety[/u]
I think the two definitions I’ve underlined are what we mean as Christians. When I think of what represents the opposite to me, I come up with..foolish talking, unseemly entertainments (most that’s out there), theological knit picking, any distractions, chosen or unavoidable, that grieve the Spirit or quench the Life in me or others.

(KJV)If you vented hard on the brother, then you need to apologize and make peace. On the other hand a brother with any growth at all may have been edified by your admonishment.
