Find someone hurting today and try to comfort that hurt so someone is better for it?

The Lord says "love one another"

Can anyone name the ways a Christian loves one another?

What are they? I seldom see such discussed. Does scripture define this love/charity that we should have for one another above all other things?

Thank you, ollie, for this reminder.
The best place to begin is in prayer for others. Then a phone call or letter and a visit. Sharing material goods is a practical way of showing God's love. Also reading the Bible together. It's been awhile but I used to go to the county jail and go into the cell blocks. I would find a table and sit and open my bible. Invariably someone would come and sit with me and we'd have a fine time in God's word.

Love is the greatest of all things. That is why loving God with all you are is the greatest commandment. The second is love your neightbor as yourself. It is actually love that is the greatest commandment for you cannot love God and hate your brother. You are a liar if you say you love God and hate your brother, for the bible says how can we love God whom we have not seen and hate a brother whom we have seen.

The most powerful act of love is forgiveness. Have you given your entire heart and being to a woman and found her sleeping with your enemy? You have given her everything and sacrificed everything for her. Yet she refuses to turn to you and instead turns to something that is bad for her. Can you forgive her and continue to seek her?

This is what God has done for us. God is love. He seeks us no matter what we have done. He is more faithful to us than our faith to Him. Everytime we sin we can confess it and God is faithful to forgive.

God is love. Our goal is to become like Him. So let us do everything in love, not with selfish ambition or in vain conceit. But imitate Christ's humility and consider others better than yourselves. Consider other's interests over your own. In the end only three things remain: that is hope, faith, and love. But the greatest of all is love. Love surpasses all things.

Amen!

We are becoming a blessing so we may bless others...we are becoming like Christ.

So that when people touch our humanity they will also touch God's divinity. So let's gain as much of Christ as we can! Be likeminded in Christ.

Phillipians 2:1-2
If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion,

then make my joy complete by being likeminded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose.

Praise God.

Let's live these words...

1 john 4:16
And we know and have believed the love which God has in us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God and God abides in him.

1 john 4:19
We love because He first loved us.

1 john 4:20
If anyone says, I love God, and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen.

1 john 4:21
And this commandment we have from Him, that he who loves God love his brother also.

Ephesians 5:2
And walk in love, even as Christ also loved us and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling savor.

This is what love is:

1 Cor 13:4
Love suffers long. Love is kind; it is not jealous. Love dos not brag and is not puffed up;

1 Cor 13:5
it does not behave unbecomingly and does not seek its own things; it is not provoked and does not take account of evil;

1 Cor 13:6
it does not rejoice because of unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth;

1 Cor 13:7
it covers all things, believes all thigns, hopes all things, endures all things.

1 Cor 13:8
Love never falls away...

Nice post Brother Ollie!  It's nice to see you around as I haven't seen you in a while.  In answer to your question, I'd say one of the best ways to show our love for one another is by excersising the spiritual gifts God has given each of us.  I think we tend to think of those gifts personally, rather than corporately.  God has gifted us to help one another.  It is love to use those gifts in that fashion.

1 Corinthians 13, the "Love Chapter" is placed conspicuously right smack dab in the middle of Paul's instruction concerning some of these gifts.  Why?  Because...

Quote
If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.

1 Corinthians 13:1-3

Paul is listing a few spiritual gifts here, and emphasizing that you be used in love to be worth anything at all, and to accomplish anything at all.  If you have the gift of giving, then give a brother or sister in Christ what they need.  If you have the gift of encouragement, then encourage those brothers and sisters who are down and out.  If you have the gift of teaching, don't wait for pews and a pulpit to come along side those who don't know, and give them the knowledge in a way God has gifted you to do.

I can have all these gifts and more, but if I don't love my brothers and sisters enough to use them in their lives, what good are they?   Smiley

Glad to be of an encouragement!  I like your name too.  He was a great, wise Psalmist who loved God.

AMEN BROTHERS!

This is a beautiful thread with many precious portions of Scripture that put a smile on my face.

Love is giving to others, not as a duty, but in joy. Giving can be many things, and much has already been mentioned. Maybe a good way to think about this is what we all need as individuals that we can provide to others:

food, drink, clothing, shelter and other necessities that sustain life

affection, companionship, support, encouragement, kindness

Prayer has been mentioned and that would be at the top of the list.

It's important to note that money is not involved in many of our needs, so a Christian who is very poor can still give much. The gift of time, effort, and caring is just as important as the gifts that cost money. I consider prayer to be a beautiful gift that is never wasted.

Matthew 22:36  Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
Matthew 22:37  Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
Matthew 22:38  This is the first and great commandment.
Matthew 22:39  And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Matthew 22:40  On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Love In Christ,
Tom

Ephesians 4:32  And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.

The gift of giving.

Whether we are an Evangelist, a Pastor or a Church Janitor, a Soldier, a Police Officer, Firemean, Store Clerk or a Box Boy as Christians we all should have the gift of giving. Giving of ourselves to the work of the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus gave of himself out of love for us. Should we do any less.

This just about says it all. We can give of ourselves in the Lord's work without having to spend a penny. A simple smile to someone who is down and out. A helping hand to someone in need whatever that need is. Changing a tire for someone along side the road. Opening a door for someone that is having difficulty doing it themselves. The old grouch next door or the young neighborhood trouble maker all need the love of Jesus through us. Not begrudgingly, but joyfully, willfully loving all.

No matter what it is nor how insignificant it may seem it can have a great impact on those around us and may be the seed planted to bring yet another one to Him.

Psa 71:8  Let my mouth be filled with thy praise and with thy honour all the day.
