 June 6 2004, the 60th anniversary of D Day.
Thank God for all our vets and their families who risked life and limb in order to keep us free from evil.

My dad served aboard the HMS Illustrious, a British aircraft carrier, during WWII. Their battle group destroyed the entire Italian fleet in port. During the war mom worked at a munitions plant, and everyone sacrificed much. Mom talks about the bombings, death and destruction, so I have a pretty good idea about how much suffering even civilians had to endure. Dad won't talk much about the war. He tried to throw his medals out one day, many years ago. Thank God that mom saw him, and took the medals back. He never even told her that he had any medals. I will inherit them, proudly.

I want to thank all our vets from WWI, WWII, Korea, Desert Storm, Afghanistan, and those who at present are fighting to this day in Iraq and around the globe...

Thank you from the depths of my heart and soul. May God richly bless you all. Myself and my family will never forget those who faught, and those who lost their lives in the name of freedom. We will always remember the families also, who sacraficed their loved ones, and those who did their part in any number of ways, without them, our boys couldn't have done what they did...Thank you all.

p.s. Not all Canadians agree with our cowardly governments refusal to back up our brothers and sisters in the recent fight on terrorism in Baghdad. In fact, the great majority of my circle of friends are downright ashamed.

My grandfather was also very silent about his war days; when he died, my dad held an auction and sold a lot of the stuff in the house he inherited. A man came up to us with a box of my grandfather's junk that was being sold, and told us there was something in there that my dad might want to keep. We had never seen this man before; he was black, in a community of white people. We never saw him again. When we checked the box he showed us, we found a purple heart medal that my grandfather had received. It would have been auctioned off with old tools. We are grateful to have it.

Thank you, veterans and your families. You sacrificed much.
