“Industry is increased, commodities are multiplied, agriculture and manufacturers flourish: and herein consists the true wealth and prosperity of a state.” —Alexander Hamilton (1790)

IN BRIEF

Pelosi Sends Climate Alarmist Virtue Signal10

As the Democrats’ effort to convince the country that President Donald Trump deserves to be impeached falters and is on the verge of backfiring, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi decided it was time to change the subject. So, with a delegation of House Democrats in tow, Pelosi jetted off to the UN’s latest climate summit, known as COP25, in Madrid, Spain. She declared that, despite the fact that Trump initiated our official withdrawal11 from the dubious 2015 Paris Agreement, the U.S. is “still in.” Pelosi asserted, “By coming here we want to say to everyone we are still in. The United States is still in. Our delegation is here to send a message that Congress’s commitment to take action on the climate crisis is ironclad.”

The Democrats’ favorite boogieman is “climate change,” but they clearly don’t believe it’s real based upon their behavior and proposed “solutions.” Nevertheless, they love to ring the alarm bells, virtue signaling their “commitment” to “save the planet.” Of course, as we have repeatedly noted, the solutions Democrats offer would do nothing to mitigate climate change and in fact would cause greater local ecological damage, while at the same time destroying the American economy — which is their real agenda12.

The reality is that since 2007, CO2 emissions have fallen in the U.S. by 14%, thanks in large part to the natural-gas boom from shale fracking, which the ecofascists and Vladimir Putin13 want to shut down. Furthermore, as of 2017, America’s emissions were 5% lower than in 1990, despite a population increase of at least 75 million. And a majority of Americans recognize that the climate alarmists’ proposed solutions would only lead to less freedom and more government interference in their lives, followed by more suffering. They simply aren’t buying the Democrats’ “solution.”

Hence the climate alarmists’ push to rebrand “climate change” into something that sounds much more dire and imminent. “Global meltdown” or “global melting” are a couple of terms proposed by climate activist Aaron Hall. He explains, “After the global climate strike this past September, I found myself thinking about the terms ‘climate change’ and ‘global warming.’ Are these scientific terms too neutral? Do they do enough to grab attention and inspire people to take action?” While his proposed alternative terms sound silly, Pelosi has clearly bought into the concept, as she emphasized that climate change was a “crisis.” In fact, the term “climate crisis” has increasingly gained traction with the mainstream media. And former Secretary of State John Kerry continues the half-century leftist obsession with treating domestic concerns as warfare, insisting, “We’ve got to treat this like a war.”

The truth is, the Democrats’ problem isn’t with “climate change” or whatever new alarmist term they adopt; it’s with capitalism. This is demonstrated by their continual refusal to praise and recognize the American free-market economy as the most effective means of producing practical solutions to tackle the challenges caused by climate change, all while they turn a blind eye to the planet’s largest polluter, communist China.

‘Schiff Show’ Roundup: Republican Rebuttal14

“The Democrats’ impeachment inquiry is not the organic outgrowth of serious misconduct; it is an orchestrated campaign to upend our political system.” That’s the summation of a 123-page report15 issued by House Republicans Devin Nunes, Jim Jordan, and Michael McCaul. “The evidence presented does not prove any of these Democrat allegations, and none of the Democrats’ witnesses testified to having evidence of bribery, extortion, or any high crime or misdemeanor.”

“The Democrats’ impeachment inquiry paints a picture of unelected bureaucrats within the foreign policy and national security apparatus who fundamentally disagreed with President Trump’s style, world view, and decisions,” the report concludes. “Their disagreements with President Trump’s policies and their discomfort with President Trump’s actions set in motion the anonymous, secondhand whistleblower complaint. Democrats seized on the whistleblower complaint to fulfill their years-old obsession with removing President Trump from office.”

That pretty well sums it up. The Republican report is a “prebuttal” of sorts for the report expected later today from House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, who will attempt to make the case for impeachment as a layup to House Judiciary Committee hearings that begin tomorrow. Schiff says he’s rushing his report because of the dire circumstances: “This is a threat to the integrity of the upcoming election, and we don’t feel it should wait, in particular when we already have overwhelming evidence of the president’s misconduct.”

We pause to note that Schiff’s report waited while Democrats took a week-long Thanksgiving break.

Meanwhile, Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler finally released his first list of witnesses. According16 to The Wall Street Journal, “The Judiciary panel’s impeachment hearing on Wednesday will be its first on the matter, and it will hear from a group of experts on what constitutes an impeachable offense. Four academics are scheduled to testify on the opening day: Noah Feldman of Harvard Law School; Pamela Karlan of Stanford Law School; Michael Gerhardt of the University of North Carolina School of Law; and Jonathan Turley of George Washington University Law School.”

Finally, in a development that would be no surprise whatsoever, “House Democrats are debating whether to expand articles of impeachment to include charges beyond abuse of power in the Ukraine controversy,” reports The Washington Post. “Members of the House Judiciary Committee and other more liberal-minded lawmakers and congressional aides have been privately discussing the possibility of drafting articles that include obstruction of justice or other ‘high crimes’ they believe are clearly outlined in special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s report — or allegations that Trump has used his office to benefit his bottom line.”

Translation: Democrats think combining the fizzled impeachment coup 1.0 (Russia) with its 2.0 sequel (Ukraine) is really the way to win the fight. Color us skeptical.

OPINION IN BRIEF

Dennis Prager: “As I have said for years, the left destroys everything it touches: music, art, Christianity, Judaism, economies, universities, high schools, late-night comedy, pro football, women’s likelihood of finding happiness, men’s likelihood of maturing, the Boy Scouts and the innocence of children (think ‘Drag Queen Story Hour’ for 5-year-olds at libraries), to cite some of the more obvious examples. And while it destroys good institutions, the left never builds a viable replacement. Is there a left-wing equivalent to the Boy Scouts, a left-wing institution that helps mold boys into responsible men? Of course not. The left destroys, but it builds nothing — except state power. Or, to take the present example, is there a left-wing equivalent to The Salvation Army? No, there isn’t. … One of the great puzzles in contemporary American life is whether there is anything the left could do to make Americans understand how destructive it is. If suppressing free speech at colleges and on the internet, fomenting interracial anger, supporting those who wish to annihilate Israel, allowing (and even encouraging) teenage girls to have their healthy breasts surgically removed if they think they are a boy and trying to crush The Salvation Army don’t do it, probably nothing will.”

SHORT CUTS

Insight: “The object and practice of liberty lies in the limitation of government power.” —General Douglas MacArthur (1880-1964)

Nailed it: “Any foreign citizen who mistakenly overstays their visa for even just one day is considered an ‘illegal’ resident. If a traveler from India has no intention of staying in the U.S. but remains here for an extra week, his status is illegal. That’s not the type of person we’re worried about. We’re worried about the hundreds of thousands who are coming every month with the purpose of staying, and those people are making their way in by illegally crossing into the country from Mexico and then claim they are seeking asylum.” —Eddie Scarry

Political futures: “House Democrats are abusing their impeachment power for political advantage. It is a miscalculation: They will never remove the president, but they might well help him win four more years in power.” —Andrew McCarthy

Grand delusions: “My goal is to get elected — but I plan to be the last American president to be elected by the Electoral College. I want my second term to be elected by direct vote.” —Sen. Elizabeth Warren

Tone deaf: “The ultimate goal … is to defeat a president and a party that has … taken a sharp turn away from a lot of the core traditions and values and institutional commitments that built this country.” —Barack Obama, who’s actually describing Democrats very accurately

Friendly fire: “The field will narrow and there’s going to be one person, and if that is not your perfect candidate and there are certain aspects of what they say that you don’t agree with and you don’t find them completely inspiring the way you’d like, I don’t care. Because the choice is so stark and the stakes are so high that you cannot afford to be ambivalent in this race.” —Barack Obama

Hot air: “Our war against nature must stop, and we know that it is possible. We simply have to stop digging and drilling and take advantage of the vast possibilities offered by renewable energy and nature-based solutions.” —United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres

Village hypocrites: “It’s time for an economic revolution. Capitalism today is failing us, killing us, and robbing from our children’s future.” —multimillionaire actor Mark Ruffalo

And last… “How long before Bernie Sanders laments the variety of chicken sandwiches available in American fast food outlets?” —Erick Erickson
