THE FOUNDATION
“In Europe, charters of liberty have been granted by power. America has set the example … of charters of power granted by liberty. This revolution in the practice of the world, may, with an honest praise, be pronounced the most triumphant epoch of its history, and the most consoling presage of its happiness.” —James Madison (1792)

IN BRIEF
30 Years After USSR Collapse, Mindless Millennials Embrace Socialism10
November 9th marked the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall — and the precipitous disintegration of the tyrannical Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and its East Block gulags.
I remember well President Ronald Reagan’s forceful remarks two years earlier. On 12 June 1987 at the Brandenburg Gate in then-West Berlin, he spoke pointedly to the Russian leader of the USSR. He demanded: “General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization, come here to this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”
Reagan spoke near the location where John Kennedy delivered his “Ich bin ein Berliner” (“I am a Berliner”) unification speech on 26 June 1963, but it took President Reagan to crush the Soviet empire without firing a Cold War shot, at least in open warfare. There were a great many American lives lost endeavoring to contain the communist threat, most notably in Korea and Vietnam.
A military colleague on our National Advisory Committee11 recounted that the Brandenburg Gate officially opened on 22 December 1989. That night, he and a friend, both in military uniform, crossed into East Berlin. They received a very different welcome reception compared to the one for which they had spent their previous decade training.
President Reagan’s speechwriter, Peter Robinson, now a Hoover Institution fellow, observed that State Department officials wanted Reagan’s bold call for Liberty12 struck from his speech. However, notes Robinson13: “After the Berlin Wall toppled … Reagan’s words … came to define a turning point in U.S.-Soviet relations. What was once deemed audacious had become auspicious.”
A day ahead of this weekend’s anniversary, a statue of President Reagan was unveiled at the U.S. embassy in Berlin. Donald Trump’s14 U.S. Ambassador to Germany, Richard Grenell, dedicated the embassy terrace overlooking the Brandenburg Gate in President Reagan’s name, and that is where his statue will reside, despite objections from the German government15.
Some European nations have institutionalized historical ignorance…
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who was a young Army tank commander in West Germany at the time of Reagan’s Brandenburg remarks, channeled his advocacy for freedom16 in his own comments at the ceremony dedicating the statue. Pompeo rebuked “former KGB officer” Vladimir Putin and described how Russia continues to “invade its neighbors and slay political opponents.”
I have been in the belly of the Soviet beast more than a few times in my career and know firsthand the consequences of socialist tyranny. In stark contrast to the efforts to secure our southern border17, the Berlin Wall, like the rest of the Soviet block border, served the purpose of keeping people IN, not out.
However, today, largely because of the relentless leftward march of the Socialist Democrat Party18, almost 70% of Millennials19 say they would vote for a socialist candidate20, having been led far astray by presidential candidate Bernie Sanders21 and his socialist ilk. Fully a third of those young people say they approve of communism22.
Ignorance is bliss — until it is not…

‘Scientists’ Advocate Population Control to Save Planet23
Like something out of a dystopian science-fiction story, more than 11,000 “scientists” from 153 nations recently signed a petition declaring that climate change would bring “untold human suffering” that is “unavoidable” unless drastic action is immediately taken. And what is the drastic action these “scientists” advocate? A socialist tyranny that would end capitalism by stopping all economic growth and … human population control. Why is it that socialists’ solutions invariably call for less stuff, fewer people, and restricted freedom?
As David Harsanyi notes24, “Basically, these scientists are advocating for the Green New Deal: a collection of ludicrous solutions wholly unconcerned with economic tradeoffs or political reality. The plan treats nature and people as moral equals, imagining them in an apartment-dwelling, plant-based-food-eating, bicycle-riding society where well-being is administered ‘by prioritizing basic needs and reducing inequality’ — which doesn’t sound creepy or authoritarian at all.”
Oh, the glaring irony in warning of “untold human suffering.” That’s exactly what would be brought by the socialist “solutions” to climate change — solutions that are responsible for creating some of the worst human suffering and misery the world has ever known. So, in order to save the planet and keep humanity from suffering, millions must die.
It’s the overpopulation myth. Harsanyi observes, “‘Overpopulation’ is routinely cited by journalists — who often live in the densest, yet miraculously, the wealthiest, places on earth — as a problem. Yet, if density were itself causing human suffering, Monaco, as Nicholas Eberstadt once pointed out, with its 16,000 people per square kilometer, would be a far bleaker place than Bangladesh, with its 1,000 people per square kilometer.”
The truth, is the greater number of humans existing, the greater amount of human capital leading to greater intellectual capacity to find and develop solutions to the myriad of problems facing humanity and the world. Stopping all modern economics and artificially limiting and controlling the human population will only serve to greatly increase human suffering, not lessen it. Thanks in large part to the spread of capitalism, the number of individuals living in abject poverty across the globe has been halved since the year 2000, even as the population of the planet has continued to increase.

Today we pause to honor American Veterans. These Patriots form the heart and soul of The Patriot Post’s Mission of Service25 to our Armed Forces.
The Patriot Post, under the able leadership of many veterans now serving with our National Advisory Committee11 and staff26, has become one of the nation’s leading advocates for our Armed Forces and their mission. We provide millions of Americans with the right perspective on that mission and the demanding tasks our military personnel have carried out with characteristic humility. It is for that reason that we request no financial support from our military readers around the world, opting instead to provide our publications and resources to them as a small token of our gratitude for their service.
Today we are asking for the support of readers who wish to join us in ensuring that The Patriot Post’s encouraging message of Liberty reaches an ever-wider audience of military Patriots and their families. Please make a secure online donation toward The Patriot Fund’s Year-End Campaign today. Thank you for your support. —Christy Chesterton, Director of Advancement
