THE FOUNDATION

“It will not be denied that power is of an encroaching nature and that it ought to be effectually restrained from passing the limits assigned to it.” —James Madison (1788)

IN TODAY’S EDITION

Pelosi hypocritically warns Democrats not to go too far left.1
Beto’s campaign flames out as he blames media.2
    Daily Features: More Analysis3, Columnists4, Headlines5, Opinion in Brief6, Short Cuts7, Memes8, and Cartoons9.

IN BRIEF

Pelosi’s Empty Warning to Her Party10

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has a message for Democrats: Rein in the unbridled run to the left. However, much like Barack Obama’s hypocritical lecture11 on “cancel culture,” Pelosi’s message rings hollow because of her sizable role in Democrats’ dramatic leftward shift.

“What works in San Francisco does not necessarily work in Michigan,” the San Francisco Democrat said. Pelosi offered a rebuttal to “progressives” like Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren hawking socialist policies, saying, “As a left-wing San Francisco liberal I can say to these people: ‘What are you thinking?’” She insists many in her party are “unhappy with me for not being a socialist.”

“Remember November,” she added. “You must win the Electoral College.”

A few thoughts. First, Pelosi is the (arguably reluctant) leader of the impeachment coup attempt12, a charade she attempted to legitimize with the veneer of guiding process rules — passed on a party-line vote13. Impeaching a duly elected president over what amounts to general derangement over his victory is about as left-wing as it gets.

Second, Pelosi perhaps realizes that Medicare for All isn’t popular with the overall American electorate, but she rammed ObamaCare through Congress on a party-line vote a decade ago. As we have long argued, ObamaCare was designed as a beachhead for single-payer government healthcare. That it took only a few years before Democrat presidential candidates were pushing for single-payer is, to the far Left, a feature of ObamaCare, not a bug. Pelosi cannot claim ignorance of that strategy, however restrained she publicly claims to be.

The same goes for climate change. Pelosi may deride “the green dream, or whatever they call it,” but her party insists “the science is settled” that humans are destroying the planet and drastic measures are needed.

Third, was her comment about the Electoral College what Leftmedia types would call a “dog whistle”? In other words, Democrats have been grumbling loudly about — and seeking to subvert14 — the Electoral College ever since Donald Trump lost the popular vote but won the presidency, as did George W. Bush in 2000. Pelosi just gave them a subtle reminder of their frustrations.

Finally, if Democrats wish to be the center-left party, perhaps their leader shouldn’t be a self-described San Francisco liberal. Pelosi may be more power broker than political ideologue, but she’s no moderate. Indeed, she is a big reason why her party has charged as hard and fast as possible toward socialism, so forgive us if we take the lectures on moderation with a big grain of salt.

Bye Bye, Beto15

The candidate who famously declared when he first jumped into the crowed field of Democrat presidential contenders that he was simply “born to run16” announced Friday evening that he is quitting the race. Robert Francis “Beto” O'Rourke, who enjoyed a wave of Leftmedia hype during his failed bid to unseat Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) in 2018, ironically faulted the media for his inability to gain any serious traction with his presidential campaign. Popularity is a fleeting thing, and O'Rourke offered little in the way of any substantive policy proposals. Instead, he ran a campaign that consisted largely of passionately and often vulgarly expressing social-justice platitudes.

From his declaration that he would tear down the walls that already exist on the U.S.-Mexico border to his support for slavery reparations and his repeated assertion that America is a racist nation to his plan to confiscate firearms17 (because Americans should not be allowed to own “weapons of war”), O'Rourke aimed to set himself apart as the most “woke” candidate.

The reality is that good political campaigns are run on more than passionately expressed platitudes. As Politico observes, “While other candidates were assembling campaign staffs and volunteer armies in early nominating states, O'Rourke lacked the infrastructure necessary to organize his own supporters. Lawmakers and major Democratic donors could not get calls returned. When the campaign’s skeletal staff promised to reach out, it sometimes forgot.” In other words, O'Rourke wasn’t much of a leader either.

The one service O'Rourke provided was his aforementioned gun policy, which exposed the Democrats’ long-term but rarely spoken agenda on firearms. While his calls for gun confiscation caused his fellow Democrats to issue words of caution about political feasibility, notably, none of them stood up against O'Rourke’s blatant assault on Americans’ Second Amendment rights. In this respect, Americans can thank O'Rourke for running.

OPINION IN BRIEF

Gary Bauer: “The so-called CIA ‘whistleblower’ and many of the people who have testified behind closed doors are mostly saying the same thing, according to the leaks. They were deeply concerned that the president was going to withhold aid from Ukraine until he got the information he wanted about corruption in the 2016 election. Here’s what I want to know: Where were all these leakers and ‘whistleblowers’ when Barack Obama was actually withholding aid from Ukraine? In the spring of 2014, Ukraine had just gotten its teeth kicked in by Vladimir Putin and Russian special forces. But Obama was unwilling to do anything more than send food and socks. Why didn’t these Deep State ‘patriots,’ deeply concerned about U.S. national security policy, file whistleblower complaints and leak to the media then? Well, it has nothing to do with Ukraine or Russia really. Donald Trump sent Ukraine the lethal military aid that Obama never would! No, these unfounded concerns for Ukraine and national security have everything to do with the Deep State’s hatred for Donald Trump and Mike Pence.”

SHORT CUTS

Insight: “Excellence demands competition. Without a race there can be no champion, no records broken, no excellence — in education or in any other walk of life.” —Ronald Reagan

For the record: “It’s kind of like Al Gore condemning climate hysteria, or like Beyoncé denouncing the over-sexualization of modern music. That’s how I felt watching former President Obama’s recent condemnation of so-called ‘cancel culture.’ Keep in mind, it’s not that I would be bothered by Gore’s renunciation of the climate cult or Beyoncé’s censuring promiscuous lyrics, it’s that I would find the whole thing surreal. When you instigate, fuel, and participate in something, it’s an odd spectacle for you to turn around and criticize it.” —Peter Heck

Non compos mentis: “My ideas are not far left. They are the ideas that the American people want.” —Sen. Bernie Sanders

Friendly fire: “I’m not a big fan of Medicare for All. I mean, I welcome the debate. I think we should have healthcare for all. I think the Affordable Care [Act] benefit is better than the Medicare benefits.” —House Speaker Nancy Pelosi

Grand delusions: “No one gets left behind. Some of the people currently working in health insurance will work in other parts of insurance. In life insurance, in auto insurance, in car insurance. Some will work for Medicaid.” —Sen. Elizabeth Warren on the hundreds of thousands who will lose jobs under her version of Medicare for All38

Bloviating: “It doesn’t raise taxes on anybody but billionaires. You know what? The billionaires can afford it, and I don’t call them middle class.” —Elizabeth Warren

Braying jenny I: “I am beyond honored and excited for a president [Bernie Sanders] who will fight against Western Imperialism and fight for a just world.” —Rep. Ilhan Omar

Braying jenny II: “Together we are going to send a powerful message [to Trump]: Your efforts to coddle White Supremacy, to ban Muslims from entering the United States, to call people at neo-Nazi rallies ‘very fine people’ will fail!” —Ilhan Omar

The BIG Lie: “Anyone who questions extreme weather and climate change is just delusional at this point. We have seen in the State of New York … weather patterns that we never had before. We didn’t have hurricanes, we didn’t have super storms, we didn’t have tornadoes.” —New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo

And last… “There are 607 billionaires in the United States. There are ZERO living trillionaires in the United States. Elizabeth Warren expects 607 people to pay for her $52 trillion plan. Do you really think those people are going to stick around if she tries to roll that plan out?” —Caleb Hull
