THE FOUNDATION

“To cherish and stimulate the activity of the human mind, by multiplying the objects of enterprise, is not among the least considerable of the expedients, by which the wealth of a nation may be promoted.” —Alexander Hamilton (1791)

IN TODAY’S EDITION

Who’s benefiting from Trump’s economy? Minorities and the poor.1
Good news on the border that an Obama judge wants to undo.2
    Daily Features: More Analysis3, Columnists4, Headlines5, Opinion in Brief6, Short Cuts7, Memes8, and Cartoons9.

IN BRIEF

Under Trump: Record Minority Employment, Fewer Food Stamps10

The Washington Post reports, “For the first time, most new hires of prime working age (25 to 54) are people of color, according to a Washington Post analysis of data the Labor Department began collecting in the 1970s. Minority hires overtook white hires last year.” If, as the Leftmedia loudly insists, President Donald Trump is a racist only interested in promoting white nationalism, he’s evidently doing a terrible job of it. In fact, under Trump’s leadership, black unemployment has hit record lows. And it’s not just blacks; minorities in general are enjoying record employment levels, as are white Americans.

Meanwhile, as the economy under Trump has surged, the number of Americans on food stamps has dropped by over six million since January 2017. The Daily Caller notes, “In February 2017, the first month after Trump took office, 42,297,791 persons were participating in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. As of June 2019, 36,029,506 persons were participating in the program.”

Yet during Barack Obama’s long “recovery,” the number of able-bodied adults on food stamps doubled, from 1.9 million to 3.9 million. One of the main factors for this increase can be tied to Obama’s waiving of the 1996 Welfare Reform Act’s work requirements. While Obama increased the number of Americans who depended on the federal government (and, by extension, the Democrat Party), Trump’s actions have reversed this trend and now fewer Americans find themselves on the government dole.

Good Border News but Bad Bench News11

Some good news from the border. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Acting Commissioner Mark Morgan reports, “During the month of August, CBP apprehended or deemed inadmissible a total of 64,006 people. For July, that number was 82,055. This represents a decline of approximately 22%. Moreover, the August number reflects a decline of 56% since the May peak, which was a staggering 144,255.” Stemming the flow of illegal border crossers is a key priority for President Donald Trump’s administration, so it’s good to see numbers going in the right direction, even if August’s apprehension numbers are still higher than any other August in over a decade.

Credit for that progress goes in part to ongoing work on border barriers12, albeit largely replacing old sections rather than constructing new ones. Credit also goes partly to Mexico and several Central American countries, which have at Trump’s behest made some changes in how asylum-seeking migrants are processed. More change is needed to deal humanely with the vast number of migrants. Many are indeed seeking refuge from terribly violent homes, but many more13 don’t actually meet any reasonable definition of asylum seeker14. In any case, they are also overwhelming the system.

Meanwhile, speaking of asylum, some bad news on the border. U.S. District Judge Jon Tigar, an Obama judge15 ensconced in the sanctuary city of San Francisco, re-issued a nationwide injunction “preventing the Trump administration’s ban on asylum-seekers who travelled through a so-called safe third country before arriving in the U.S.,” reports National Review. Not only is Tigar grossly exceeding his own authority to “check” Trump, he’s giving the middle finger to a higher court. National Review adds that he “issued the ruling after the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in August narrowed his previous nationwide injunction, allowing the Trump administration to implement the asylum-rule change in Texas and New Mexico but not in California or Arizona.”

The Wall Street Journal editorial board is exactly correct in arguing, “Nationwide injunctions are supposed to be an extraordinary remedy, not an automatic resort for plaintiffs who dislike a policy. The Supreme Court needs to step in and define the limits of this increasingly willful judicial intervention.”

The elected branches of government are responsible for securing this nation. Congress has entirely abdicated that responsibility when it comes to immigration (and, frankly, a host of other issues) for transparently political reasons. That leaves President Trump to do what he can. Unfortunately, he’s fighting for secure borders and reasonable Rule of Law immigration policy not only against caravans of migrants seeking to cross the border illegally but against judges who seem hell-bent on asserting their own despotic rule16.

OPINION IN BRIEF

Stephen Moore: “Of all the preposterous proposals put forward by the Democratic presidential candidates during the CNN climate change town hall meeting last week, the dumbest wasn’t outlawing plastic straws, incandescent light bulbs or air travel. It wasn’t the contention that climate change is the globe’s greatest threat since World War II. It wasn’t even the fantastical hypothesis that hurricanes are racist because they target "communities of color” more than white areas. No, the dumbest (and most dangerous) idea was a rehash of the widely discredited authoritarian idea from the 1960s and ‘70s: population control. … This is a fundamentally anti-Judeo-Christian ideology that disrespects human life and — as history proves all too well — can lead to dastardly consequences for basic human rights and economic progress. In regard to environmental problems and the constantly changing climate of our planet, human ingenuity is the solution, not the cause.“

SHORT CUTS

Upright: "If you don’t like the law, you go across the street. You change it. It’s not my job to do [Congress’s] job.” —Justice Neil Gorsuch

Observations: “The better you do and the happier you are, the more money you have in your pocket to spend, the more freedom you have to just live the life you want to live, the unhappier [Democrats] seem to get.” —Laura Ingraham

Friendly fire: “I think that the identity politics that are being used to further divide us, to further drive separations between us, and purely for selfish, political gain is a real danger.” —Rep. Tulsi Gabbard

Friendly fire II: “I think it’s important for us to think about what is in the best interest of the country and the American people, and continuing to pursue impeachment is something that I think will only further … tear our country apart.” —Tulsi Gabbard

Friendly fire III: “I don’t support open borders. Without secure borders, we don’t really have a country. And while some of the other Democratic candidates will say, 'Well, open borders, that’s a conservative argument and that’s not really what’s being advocated for,’ if you look at some of the practical implications of some of the things they are pushing for, it is essentially open borders.” —Tulsi Gabbard

Demo-gogues: “I really believe sincerely … [that] if the Bill of Rights … were put before the public today, I’m not too sure that we would hold onto [them].” —House Majority Whip James Clyburn

Alpha jackass: “[The El Paso assailant] drove 600 miles with that hatred, really at the invitation of our president, and opened fire with that AK-47 on innocent people in a Walmart, killing 22 of them and grievously wounding many dozens more.” —Beto O'Rourke

And last… “Are all the Democratic candidates really for abortion on demand at 39 weeks? That’s insanely evil. The average Ku Klux Klan member gets to look down on people who hold that position.” —Frank J. Fleming
