THE FOUNDATION

“If by the liberty of the press were understood merely the liberty of discussing the propriety of public measures and political opinions, let us have as much of it as you please: But if it means the liberty of affronting, calumniating and defaming one another, I, for my part, own myself willing to part with my share of it.” —Benjamin Franklin (1789)

IN TODAY’S EDITION

“Some of [Trump’s] actions and words have been plainly racist,” says WaPo.1
China and the U.S. will now resume trade talks.2
    Daily Features: More Analysis3, Columnists4, Headlines5, Opinion in Brief6, Short Cuts7, Memes8, and Cartoons9.

IN BRIEF

Leftmedia Brands Trump a ‘Racist’10

Notwithstanding the cockamamie idea of impeaching Donald Trump, there are two primary strategies Democrats are using in the lead-up to the 2020 election: seeding a politically induced recession11, and personifying Trump as an unmistakable racist.

The Washington Post went full throttle12 this week with the latter method, unashamedly asserting that Trump “is vexed by a branding crisis of his own: how to shed the label of ‘racist.’” The Post pontificates, “As the campaign takes shape about 15 months before voters render a verdict on his presidency, Trump’s Democratic challengers are marking him a racist, and a few have gone so far as to designate him a white supremacist.” The article then claims:

Throughout his career as a real estate magnate, a celebrity provocateur and a politician, Trump has recoiled from being called the r-word, even though some of his actions and words have been plainly racist. Following a month in which he used racist remarks to attack four congresswomen of color, maligned a majority-black Baltimore district as a “rat and rodent infested mess” and saw his anti-immigrant rhetoric parroted in a statement that authorities believe was written by a mass shooter, the risk for Trump is that the pejorative that has long dogged him becomes defining. … Trump recently called himself “the least racist person anywhere in the world,” but his history is littered with racist and racially charged comments and actions. [Emphasis added.]

Importantly, the Post isn’t accusing Trump of having used racist language. It’s effectively saying with certitude that he has and is using racist language. Which effectively makes him a racist. We won’t debunk every incident provided by the Post, but some reflection on the first assertion — that Trump “used racist remarks to attack four congresswomen of color” — provides all we need to know about its universal lack of impartiality.

Recall that Trump stated, “Why don’t [Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, and Rashida Tlaib] go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came[?] Then come back and show us how it is done.” To which our Nate Jackson responded13, “Trump said what he said poorly, leaving himself wide open for the very assault he’s facing. He said what we think he meant far better in defending himself later. ‘These are people that hate our country,’ he said. ‘If you’re not happy in the U.S., if you’re complaining all the time, very simply, you can leave.’”

Jackson concluded: “Buried under Trump’s garbled prose is a legitimate point, and it has nothing to do with race. It has to do with loving or hating America and the political party guilty of the latter.” But the Post isn’t interesting in making that point, nor are any of the other Leftmedia outlets whose only agenda is portraying Trump as a racist to bolster support for Democrats in 2020 — the same strategy that’s behind the Left’s seeding a politically induced recession.

Amazingly, the Post in a separate piece14 claimed, “From race to plastic straws, Trump dials up culture wars in divisive play for 2020 votes.” It was the Left that dialed up the culture wars to obtain more votes. And it’s now steadfastly using the “racist” label to obtain even more votes.

Trump Delays New Round of China Tariffs15

On Tuesday, the United States Trade Representative office said that it was delaying the implementation of a third round of tariffs against China — tariffs that President Donald Trump had announced two weeks ago. The White House noted that the 10% tariffs on $300 billion worth of Chinese goods would now be put off until Dec. 15th, with the rational given of seeking to prevent Americans from having to pay higher prices on gift purchases prior to the Christmas holiday season.

While that explanation was certainly part of the calculation, as tariffs on foreign goods most impact consumers, in all likelihood the main reason for Trump’s tariff delay has much more to do with the recent news of an agreement to restart the stalled trade talks with China. It appears that both China and the U.S. are eager to get a trade deal done in the hopes of staving off a recession, fears of which have produced increasing volatility in the markets this month.

China is also clearly feeling pressure from the growing freedom movement in Hong Kong. The last thing Beijing wants is for these protests to spill out into mainland China, hence the recent movement of troops to the Hong Kong border. While China would love nothing more than to see Trump gone from office in 2020, with trouble growing in Hong Kong, Beijing can ill afford more economic contractions by putting off trade talks. Meanwhile, the tricky path Trump will have to navigate is to both vocally support Hong Kong’s freedom movement while at the same time work to secure a fair trade deal with China.

OPINION IN BRIEF

Star Parker: “My guess is if I ask which organization has more political sway, the NRA or Planned Parenthood, many would say the NRA — probably because of our left-wing media. But pull up OpenSecrets, the website of the Center for Responsive Politics, which tracks money in U.S. politics. What you will find is that in 2018, the NRA made political contributions of $873,071. Planned Parenthood made political contributions totaling $7,183,139, more than eight times greater than those of the NRA, 99.5 percent of which went to Democratic candidates or to organizations supporting them. The Center for Responsive Politics ranks Planned Parenthood No. 54 out of 19,225 making political contributions, and the NRA No. 543. Is it relevant to bring Planned Parenthood into this discussion about guns? Yes. As I have been arguing all along, we cannot get to an appropriate approach for dealing with guns without considering the culture that produces deranged, detached, violent loners.”

SHORT CUTS

Insight: “Strange times are these in which we live when old and young are taught in falsehood’s school. And the one man who dares to tell the truth is called at once a lunatic and fool.” —Plato (429-347 BC)

Friendly fire: “[Kamala] Harris and [Elizabeth] Warren have ignored the findings of the Justice Department to accuse [Darren] Wilson of murder, even though the Justice Department found no credible evidence to support that claim. … Harris and Warren both earn Four Pinocchios.” —The Washington Post’s Glenn Kessler

Alpha Jackass: “[Donald Trump’s] been fueling the flames of hate and … on the issue of El Paso … he obviously didn’t pull the trigger, but he’s sure been tweeting out the ammunition.” —Sen. Kamala Harris

Non Compos Mentis: “The fact is that Mr. [Jeffrey] Epstein took his own life. He died while he was in the custody of the Trump administration. Bill Barr directs the Bureau of Prisons, and they allowed, in some ways, they facilitated Mr. Epstein’s suicide.” —MSNBC legal analyst Paul Butler

Braying Jackass: “If Trump’s nose grew every time he told a lie he could use it as a zip line straight to Vladimir Putin’s bedroom.” —Jimmy Kimmel

Race bait: “Why is Donald Trump so interested in cutting off this generation of immigrants? … He wants a whiter, wealthier nation. That’s what’s he’s interested in.” —Julian Castro

The BIG Lie: “The [Republican National Committee] will be allowed to cheat and lie and go into polling places and scare voters, particularly voters of color.” —Stacey Abrams

And last… “I think [Democrats] live in a fantasy world. Reality is that the United States is lowering emissions, one of the only countries in the world. Matter of fact, I think of all the 194 [countries] that signed on to the Paris Accord, the U.S. is the one that’s leading the world in reducing emissions. That’s what they ought to be talking about — that America [is] transitioning away from old, inefficient power plants to natural gas plants [and] lowering emissions. … It is fantastical when you think about the true misrepresentation of the truth that the Democrats are spewing out there.” —Rick Perry
