EDITOR’S NOTE

Via his favorite “official” platform, President Donald Trump announced this morning that there would be a “News Conference on the Census and Citizenship” this afternoon. A White House official intimated that he intends executive action related to the 2020 census. The road to getting a question about citizenship on the census has been a long and winding one full of roadblocks10. So stay tuned…

IN BRIEF

Pelosi vs. Ocasio-Cortez11

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is the very definition of the old guard. At age 79 and in Congress since 1987, to many, Pelosi represents “yesterday’s party.” Sure, she led Democrats to victory in the House in 2008, shoved ObamaCare down America’s throat in spite of the political cost, and then once again assumed the speakership after last year’s midterm win. But she’s increasingly having trouble reining in a few outspoken freshman Democrats who view themselves as the future. She even admonished the entire Democrat caucus in a closed-door meeting Wednesday for publicly airing grievances.

The most prominent among the newcomers is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the loudmouth former bartending Millennial socialist from the Bronx. The ubiquitous Leftmedia overload12 on “AOC” is mind-numbing, but pundits hang on her every word. The Right largely sees her as a poster child for everything foolish and idiotic about socialism.

At least publicly, Pelosi gives off the same vibe. In February, she dismissed the Green New Deal13 as “the green dream, or whatever they call it,” knowing full well what they call it. This week, she derided Ocasio-Cortez and her cohorts, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, and Ayanna Pressley, saying, “All these people have their public whatever and their Twitter world. But they didn’t have any following” in the House. Indeed, these sorts of comments are becoming regular for Pelosi, who seems to disdain the way AOC and her pals think they’re “the boss.”

“I have no regrets about anything,” Pelosi said when asked about her remarks. “Regrets is not what I do.”

In response, Ocasio-Cortez pulled out the race card, claiming it’s “the explicit singling out of newly elected women of color.”

Perhaps this represents a true rift14 in the Democrat Party. For Pelosi and the old guard, the way to get things done is through rigid unity of the caucus. Keep squabbles private, and when push comes to shove, fall in line and vote to advance an achievable agenda. That’s how they accomplished the radical takeover of one-sixth of the economy through ObamaCare. To “progressives” a decade later, however, that’s already old policy needing to be replaced by single-payer health care via Medicare for All.

The extreme Left is vying for control of the Democrat Party — indeed, it already does dictate most of the agenda. But Pelosi isn’t taking kindly to being pushed faster or farther than she wants to go. “If the Left doesn’t think I’m left enough, so be it,” she said. It will bear watching how this Democrat “civil war15” plays out.

Leftmedia Mocks Trump’s Social-Media Summit16

President Donald Trump is hosting his White House Social Media Summit today, an invitation-only event billed by the president as addressing the subject of “the tremendous dishonesty, bias, discrimination and suppression practiced by certain companies.” Those companies are assumed to be Big Tech — Alphabet (which owns Google and YouTube), Facebook, and Twitter — all of whom many conservatives and other non-mainstream news organizations have called out for anti-free-speech censorship practices.

The list of invites includes social-media personalities such as citizen-journalist Tim Pool, Project Veritas founder James O'Keefe, and Turning Point USA leader Charlie Kirk, as well as representatives from organizations like Prager University, Media Research Center, The Heritage Foundation, and several others.

In what has become standard practice, Leftmedia activists masquerading as journalists reported on the story by labeling the list of invitees as nothing but a bunch of “right-wing extremists,” “conspiracy theorists,” and “far-right agitators.” No wonder so many Americans are sympathetic to Trump’s calling the mainstream media what it is: “fake news17.”

The fact of the matter is that mounting evidence supporting the accusation that Big Tech is intentionally censoring conservative content is undeniable. However, in the same way that the MSM has claimed its own reporting is not impacted by bias, both the media and the tech companies assert that the charges of censorship are little more than the hyperbolic rambling of right-wing conspiracy theorists. MSM pontificators see themselves as the only legitimate arbiters of “news” and “journalism”18 and are loathe to acknowledge the legitimacy of any new media citizen-journalist whose reporting and viewpoints don’t comport with their own leftist worldview. Thus, the very fact that Trump would deign to take seriously and listen to the complaints of censorship voiced by various members of the new media induces only scorn and ridicule from the mainstream press.

Fortunately, Trump is not beholden to the whims of the mainstream-media establishment. Indeed, he relishes calling out the Leftmedia over its biased “fake news.” It will be interesting to see what comes of this summit today, although it is unlikely that any immediate action would be expected.

DETENTION CENTERS UNDER FIRE: “House lawmakers on Wednesday heard emotional testimony from a Guatemalan woman seeking asylum in the United States whose two-year-old daughter contracted a lung infection while at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center in Texas and died shortly after their release,” Fox News28 reports. Speaking of detention centers, the Washington Examiner29 says, “Border officials in El Paso, Texas, this spring began separating migrants in federal custody based on nationality due to hostility and tension between Central and South American detainees who were being held in the same cells and even areas of facilities, according to several federal agents. The practice continued at least into June.” It’s almost as if cultural differences and assimilation matter.

DOUBLE STANDARDS: “The Democratic-led House Oversight and Reform Committee deleted tweets this week that used Obama-era photos of border detention facilities in an effort to slam President Trump’s treatment of illegal immigrants.” (The Washington Times30)

A ROYAL HASSLE: “Iranian boats tried to impede a British oil tanker near the Gulf — before being driven off by a Royal Navy ship, the Ministry of Defence has said. HMS Montrose, a British frigate shadowing the BP-owned tanker, was forced to move between the three boats and the tanker, a spokesman said. … Iran had threatened to retaliate for the seizure of one of its own tankers, but denied any attempted seizure.” (BBC31)

ACOSTA ACCOSTED: “Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta defended his actions in the 2008 plea deal arranged for accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein in a Wednesday news conference,” The Federalist32 reports. “Acosta argued that his office proceeded appropriately based on the evidence that got Epstein jail time and registration as a sex offender.” Meanwhile, “House Democrats summoned … Acosta to an oversight hearing to explain his role in helping accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein escape a major prison sentence more than ten years ago,” according to the Washington Examiner33. The hearing will occur on July 23.

ON SECOND THOUGHT… “The Trump administration is dropping a plan to curb billions of dollars in annual rebates that drugmakers give middlemen in Medicare, a proposal it had said would drive down the prices consumers pay for prescription drugs.” (The Wall Street Journal34)

HANDOUTS FOR ILLEGALS: “California has become the first state in the country to offer government-subsidized health benefits to young adults living in the U.S. illegally. The measure signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom on Tuesday extends coverage to low-income, undocumented adults age 25 and younger for the state’s Medicaid program.” (NPR35)

TAXING TECH: “A French tax on tech companies was approved by parliament on Thursday after the Senate approved a final version of the bill in defiance of a U.S. investigation. … U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer on Wednesday announced an investigation … amid the Trump administration concerns that the measure unfairly targets U.S. tech firms. The digital services tax would apply a 3 percent levy on tech firms with at least 750 million euros (about $845 million) in global revenue and 25 million euros (about $281 million) of digital sales in France.” (Fox Business36)

POLICY: Is there a future for nuclear power in the United States? (Manhattan Institute37)

OPINION IN BRIEF

Cal Thomas: “Two summers ago on a visit to Budapest, I asked the spokesman for the Hungarian government about the growing problem of migrants coming into Europe. He told me Hungary doesn’t have a migrant problem because they don’t have welfare programs. So, he said, migrants continue their travels to other European countries that do. That’s not the end of it, though. Hungary has created programs to help migrants stay in their own countries so they won’t feel the need to flee to Europe. It is a model the U.S. should consider adopting beyond dwindling and often misdirected foreign aid.”

SHORT CUTS

For the record: “The U.S. Census Bureau’s global population clock reports more than 7.5 billion people on our planet. For those wondering about the potential financial impact of offering insurance coverage to all of humanity … the population of the world is roughly 23 times as large as the population of the United States.” —James Freeman

Food for thought: “So here we have the captain of the American women’s soccer team reluctant to sing the national anthem. You know what I think [Megan Rapinoe] may be angling for? Kaepernick. She wants a Kaepernick deal with Nike. … She’s showing Nike she can be just as anti-American as Kaepernick. Give me a chance. Let me do the LGBTQ angle of Kaepernick.” —Rush Limbaugh

Belly laugh of the week: “With the 4th World Cup title now secured by the USWNT, what should Megan Rapinoe do next? One recommendation would be to enter the Democratic Primary for president.” —Democrat strategist Kevin Walling

Non Compos Mentis: “Patriarchy has no gender.” —Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Intraparty infighting: “When these comments first started, I kind of thought that [Nancy Pelosi] was keeping the progressive flank at more of an arm’s distance in order to protect more moderate members, which I understood. But the persistent singling out … it got to a point where it was just outright disrespectful … the explicit singling out of newly elected women of color.” —Ocasio-Cortez

Braying Jenny: “Fox News is now giving a nightly platform to white supremacist rhetoric. It’s dangerous. Advertisers should not be underwriting hate speech.” —Rep. Ilhan Omar (“Omar is an anti-Semitic, anti-American bigot who is far more likely to defend the character of convicted ISIS terrorists than she is the character of the nation that saved her from the war-torn Islamist hellhole that is Somalia.” —Sean Davis)

Race bait: “This country was founded on white supremacy. And every single institution and structure that we have in the country still reflects the legacy of slavery and segregation and Jim Crow and suppression even in our democracy.” —Robert Francis “Beto” O'Rourke

And last… “If white supremacy is woven into American democracy as Beto claims, why isn’t he doing something about it by stepping aside and endorsing Kamala Harris or Cory Booker?” —Erick Erickson
