IN BRIEF

Left Laments Trump’s Environmental Success10

On Monday, President Donald Trump praised11 his administration’s work on the environment. He spoke of the Environmental Protection Agency’s refocusing on its “core mission,” noting, “Last year, the agency completed more Superfund hazardous waste cleanups than any year of the previous administrations. … We have done tremendous work on Superfunds.” He also highlighted his signing of the Save Our Seas Act, a joint agreement with Canada and Mexico to combat the growing problem of ocean trash.

Meanwhile, Trump was critical of the Democrats’ Green New Deal12, asserting, “It’ll kill millions of jobs. It’ll crush the dreams of the poorest Americans and disproportionately harm minority communities. I will not stand for it. We will defend the environment, but we will also defend American sovereignty, American prosperity, and we will defend American jobs.”

He also highlighted the fact that even after he pulled the U.S. out of the Paris Climate Accord13, America leads all other signatory nations in emissions reductions. Trump argued, “A strong economy is vital to maintaining a healthy environment,” adding that he believes an environmental policy that penalizes Americans is counterproductive to both Americans and the environment. He cogently observed, “For years politicians told Americans that a strong economy and vibrant energy sector were incompatible with a healthy environment — that one thing doesn’t go with the other.” However, Trump declared, “That’s wrong.”

Predictably, leftists panned Trump’s speech and environmental record because he never acknowledged their pet alarmist issue: climate change. The Hill’s headline serves as case in point: “Trump touts environmental policies, but says nothing of climate change.” The fact of the matter is, Trump recognizes there are actual environmental policies that can be implemented that bring real, demonstrable change. Strangling the economy to fight alleged anthropogenic climate change is simply not one of them. This reality is demonstrated by the fact that the only solution offered is a massive government takeover of the economy to institute some form of socialism, which in turn offers no viable solution to pay for the $93 trillion price tag and for avoiding the certain bankruptcy such a policy would bring upon the nation. And even if we were to implement these drastic draconian policies, we are told that impact upon the global climate would be minimal at best.

So the question is: Who has the better environmental record? Trump has a far better case than do the ecofascists.

U.S. Women Win Whiner’s World Cup14

What’s worse than a whiny loser? A whiny winner. In a nutshell, the U.S. women’s soccer team had an incredible run to win its fourth Women’s World Cup. The American women turned in a dominant performance that, under normal circumstances, should make our nation proud. But instead of uniting the country behind the national team, the entire story has been the team’s griping, complaining, and general anti-Americanism. What a shame.

American midfielder Megan Rapinoe made clear her disdain for American President Donald Trump. Fine, an athlete doesn’t like Trump. What else is new? But she went out of her way to refuse a White House invite before it had even been given — indeed, before the team had even won. How self-righteous and presumptuous. After the victory, she said she’d be “very happy to accept” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s invite.

Then there was midfielder Allie Long, who dropped the American flag on the ground during her choreographed victory celebration with Rapinoe. Teammate Kelley O'Hara picked up the flag, but the disrespect had been shown.

And finally there was the championship celebration marred by tiresome chants of “equal pay!” According to The New York Times, “In recent years, that fight for pay equality has been the women’s team’s calling card. The players contend they are paid less by the United States Soccer Federation than the men — sometimes tens of thousands of dollars or more for top players in a given year — and that the situation has persisted for years even as the women’s team has collected more trophies and begun to produce more revenue than the men.” Never mind that six of the 12 top-paid U.S. players are women. The women’s team sued U.S. soccer for gender discrimination earlier this year.

It’s true that the U.S. men’s soccer team has never been as successful as the women. The men didn’t even make the World Cup in 2018. It’s also true that the women don’t bring home as much money as the men. But the women’s pie is a whole lot smaller.

Matt Walsh explains, “FIFA, the international soccer organization, will give about $400 million to male players in the World Cup, while female players will make around $30 million.” That sounds bad, but not when revenue is factored in. The Women’s World Cup earned in the neighborhood of $130 million. That’s great, but the 2018 Men’s World Cup brought in more than $6 billion. So the women’s slice of the pie (20% of revenue) is far larger than the men’s (7%), relative to the whole. But Rapinoe wants that $30 million for the women to be quadrupled to $120 million. How about quadrupling revenue first?

Why so much more money for the men? More viewers. Rich Lowry notes, “The women’s tournament this year may have had about a billion viewers across all platforms, nothing to sneeze at. But the 2018 men’s World Cup had more than a billion viewers just for the final game.”

We’re not making any judgment to assert the simple fact that not nearly as many people watch the women as watch the men. That translates to more money for the men. It’s not misogyny or some travesty of “social justice”; it’s simply the market at work.

PEROT DIES: “H. Ross Perot, an eccentric Dallas billionaire whose two independent runs for president in the 1990s tapped into voters’ frustration with the major political parties and foreshadowed the rise of the tea party two decades later, died July 9 at his home in Dallas. He was 89.” (The Washington Post26)

THE MORE THINGS CHANGE… “California Rep. Eric Swalwell became the first serious presidential candidate to drop from the Democratic primary on Monday,” reports Time magazine27. Or, as PJ Media28 alternatively headlines it, “BREAKING: Eric Swalwell has been running for president this whole time.”

…THE MORE THEY STAY THE SAME: “Tom Steyer has changed his mind. The billionaire progressive activist and a leader in the drive to impeach President Trump said earlier this year he wouldn’t run for the White House. But on Tuesday, he announced in a four-minute campaign video that he’s launching a bid for the Democratic presidential nomination.” (Fox News29)

DEMO-PLUNDER SWEEPSTAKES: Federal $15 minimum wage would eliminate 1.3 million jobs, Congressional Budget Office says (National Review30)

BORDER ARRESTS DROP: “The number of people taken into custody after illegally crossing from Mexico into the United States dropped in June for the first time in six months, plummeting by more than 37,500 since May, according to two officials with first-hand knowledge of the data. Exactly 94,487 people were arrested crossing between ports of entry in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California last month.” (Washington Examiner31)

HISPANIC POPULATION SURGES: “The U.S. Hispanic population surged another 1.2 million last year and now is a record 59.9 million, according to newly released U.S. Census Bureau population estimates. The percentage of Hispanics as part of the overall U.S. population also jumped to 18%.” (Washington Examiner32)

‘GLOBAL HOT AIR’ AWARD: “A group of US lawmakers including … Bernie Sanders are proposing to declare the climate crisis an official emergency,” according to The Guardian33. Meanwhile, The Independent34 says that “France will introduce an ‘eco-tax’ … on tickets for all flights leaving the country,” which “comes amid an escalating planetary climate emergency which is disproportionally being caused by the tiny percentage of people who use planes for transport.” Will Bernie et al. do their part to ameliorate this “climate emergency” by refusing to fly airplanes? Don’t bet on it. But take solace by reading Trump’s remarks on America’s environmental leadership11.

NUCLEAR PROLIFERATION: “Iran said it had already begun enriching uranium beyond the cap set in the landmark 2015 nuclear deal and threatened to boost enrichment to 20% purity, escalating tensions with European partners who are struggling to salvage the accord in the face of tightening U.S. sanctions.” (Bloomberg35)

GUN-CONTROL DEFIANCE: “New Zealand’s government … is running into stiff resistance to new gun rules from firearms owners who are slow to surrender now-prohibited weapons and will probably never turn them in. … As of last week, only around 700 weapons had been turned over. There are an estimated 1.5 million guns — with an unknown number subject to the new prohibition on semiautomatic firearms — in the country overall.” (Reason36)

RACISM: “A local music festival in Detroit has moved away from ticket prices based on race after drawing international attention when a rapper pulled out of the show over the price discrepancy. The organizers behind Afrofuture Fest announced on their Eventbrite listing last week that tickets for people of colour would cost $20 US. Tickets for "non-people of colour,” however, were priced at $40 US.“ (CBC News37)

OPINION IN BRIEF

Hans von Spakovsky & Greg Walsh: "Enough is enough. The U.S. Justice Department needs to immediately open a criminal civil rights investigation of Antifa, an affiliation of radical activists and left-wing groups whose name, ironically enough, is short for ‘anti-fascists.’ Their attack on journalist Andy Ngo was beyond the pale. Federal law enforcement has an obligation to stop any extremist organization that is apparently organizing and precipitating violent attacks, especially if state and local authorities seem reluctant to take action against what has all the makings of a domestic terrorist organization. … It is shocking to assert that ‘rioters, blockaders, cop-fighters, and people in ski masks’ are the enlightened nobility who can save our constitutional republic from internal ruin. It is also plainly wrong. And it is time that federal law enforcement and Justice Department officials took notice of this potentially ominous threat to our civil society.”

SHORT CUTS

Insight: “Undoubtedly some think that the Second Amendment is outmoded in a society where our standing army is the pride of our Nation, where well-trained police forces provide personal security, and where gun violence is a serious problem. That is perhaps debatable, but what is not debatable is that it is not the role of this Court to pronounce the Second Amendment extinct.” —Justice Antonin Scalia (1936-2016)

Upright: “I don’t think that serves an important purpose dragging Bob Mueller up if he in fact is going to stick to the report. It seems to me the only reason for doing that is to create some kind of public spectacle.” —Attorney General William Barr

For the record: “A call to ban the Confederate Flag due to its association with slavery is akin to banning the Democrat Party’s Donkey and Islam’s Crescent, as both of those institutions were involved in the enslavement of Africans.” —William Federer

Re: the Left: “We don’t want to be seen as so-called Bible-thumpers. We have withdrawn from talking openly about our faith in part out of a recoiling from those who seem so absolutely certain that they know that Scripture demands this particular pathway in politics or policy.” —Sen. Chris Coons

Annals of the absurd: “Air-conditioning is unhealthy, bad, miserable, and sexist. I can’t explain how many times I’ve gotten sick over the summer b/c of overzealous AC in offices.” —The Atlantic’s Taylor Lorenz

Braying Jackass: “[The citizenship question] is about keeping — you know … his hat — Make America White Again.” —House Speaker Nancy Pelosi

Non Compos Mentis: “Starting over [on health care] would be, I think, a sin.” —Joe Biden

And last… “If you think [Eric] Swalwell took a hit [yesterday], just wait til he gets primaried by a bag of chips for his House seat."—Steven Crowder
