THE FOUNDATION
“Let me now take a more comprehensive view, and warn you in the most solemn manner against the baneful effects of the Spirit of Party generally.” —George Washington (1796)

IN TODAY’S EDITION
Trump gets some of the funding he sought, but not much. Is it still a win?1
Ilhan Omar is a symptom of a greater problem for Democrats.2
Daily Features: More Analysis3, Columnists4, Headlines5, Opinion in Brief6, Short Cuts7, Memes8, and Cartoons9.
IN BRIEF
Congress on the Cusp of a Border Deal10
Thomas Gallatin
Monday night, following early fears that a second partial government shutdown may be unavoidable, lawmakers emerged from closed-door meetings announcing that they had reached an agreement … in principle. The deal includes $1.38 billion in funding for 55 miles of new physical border-barrier construction, which is well below the $5.7 billion in funding for 230 miles of barrier that President Donald Trump had requested. Yet it is clearly a compromise wherein Democrats finally conceded to give some funding for the border barrier they had labeled “immoral.”
Fortunately, Republicans were able to block the Democrats’ effort to reduce and place limits on the number of detention beds available to Immigration and Customs Enforcement for holding illegal aliens. This final sticking point was an attempt by Democrats to secure greater restraints on ICE, an agency they have increasingly targeted, with some Democrats even openly advocating its abolition11.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) wasn’t about to concede to Democrats on these limits. “This is a poison pill that no administration — not this one, not the previous one — would or should ever accept,” he said. “House Democrats want to set a limit on how many criminal aliens our government can detain.”
Prior to the agreement, Trump argued, “If we cut detention space, we are cutting loose dangerous criminals into our country.” He also pledged, “I will never sign a bill that forces the mass release of criminals into this country.”
As we have noted before, any funding for the construction of a border barrier is a win for Trump, and while the $1.38 billion is far from what is needed, it is the proverbial crack in the door that Trump will continue to lean on. Some conservatives have blasted the deal for not allocating enough funding, which is true, but this needs to be weighed in light of the overall long-term battle. Small steps forward still move the ball in the right direction. If Congress passes this spending deal, it is likely Trump will sign it.

Ilhan Omar: The Effluent of Leftist Identity Politics12
Nate Jackson
Minnesota Democrat Ilhan Omar appears to think her roll as a freshman member of Congress is to troll the president, tell lies about Catholic boys13, and peddle anti-Semitism. After already facing rebuke for a 2012 tweet asserting that “Israel has hypnotized the world,” Omar suggested Israel’s American political allies were motivated solely by money, saying, “It’s all about the Benjamins baby” — clearly a nod to old stereotypes about Jews and money. Given her own Muslim faith, associations with other anti-Semitic individuals, backing of the socialist and anti-Israel Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS)14 movement, and general support for the Palestinians terrorizing Israel, Omar’s comment is more than just misspeaking. There’s a hate-Israel pattern15 here. The same can be said of her fellow Muslim congresswoman, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan.
Stung in recent years by valid charges of rampant anti-Semitism16 in their ranks — not to mention the whole racist fiasco in Virginia17 — Democrats may have had enough. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Democrat leaders quickly issued a statement condemning Omar’s “use of anti-Semitic tropes and prejudicial accusations about Israel’s supporters” and demanding an apology.
That apology was soon forthcoming, but Omar couldn’t resist a wink and nod to make clear it wasn’t sincere. “Anti-Semitism is real and I am grateful for Jewish allies and colleagues who are educating me on the painful history of anti-Semitic tropes,” she said. “My intention is never to offend my constituents or Jewish Americans as a whole. … I unequivocally apologize.” But then she added, “At the same time, I reaffirm the problematic role of lobbyists [like] AIPAC” — the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.
Translation: Sorry not sorry.
At least she has the support18 of former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke.
From a larger perspective, the growing anti-Semitism on the Left could become a political problem for Democrats. More than 75% of American Jews voted Democrat in the 2018 midterms, and that’s roughly in line with most of the last century. There are 34 Jews in Congress, and all but two are Democrat.
Dennis Prager19 and Don Feder20, both conservative Jews, have attempted to explain this seeming paradox. The situation may be unlikely to change anytime soon, but Democrats must also be careful to sweep their anti-Semites under the rug where they won’t cause too much voter bleed. That also explains their effort to elevate a small rabble of anti-Semitic “alt-right21” loudmouths and tie them to President Donald Trump. Like blacks or women, if Democrats ever begin to lose Jews in serious numbers, they’ll be in serious trouble.

Dispatcher Takes Her Dad’s Final PD Sign Off Call26
“A special moment was recorded between a Chattanooga police officer and his daughter, a dispatcher. Chattanooga Police Lt. Austin Garrett retired this week after 25 years with the department. A video posted online shows the moment he signed off for the last time this week. The dispatcher on the other end was his daughter, Haley Garrett.”

TOP HEADLINE SUMMARY
According to The Hill29, “Eight immigrant families separated under the Trump administration’s immigration policies filed claims Monday for millions of dollars in damages for what a lawyer called ‘inexplicable cruelty’ that left lasting damage.” Left unmentioned is the cruelty these heads of families recklessly bring upon their children by illegally immigrating.
The Washington Post reports30, “Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) is pushing for a debate on the substance of her Green New Deal resolution after her staff distributed an erroneous fact sheet regarding the proposal, leading to confusion over a plan supported by many of the Democratic Party’s leading candidates for president.” But is it actually confusion, or is it, as Gary Bauer more reasonably suggests31, damage control?
Color us shocked: “Strict voter ID laws do not suppress turnout, a new paper finds, regardless of sex, race, Hispanic identity, or party affiliation. … In total, 10 states, ranging from Georgia to Wisconsin, require voters to show ID in order to vote. … The new research, from an economics professor at the University of Bologna and another at Harvard Business School, indicates that ‘strict’ voting laws of the type implemented in those ten states do not have a statistically significant effect on voter turnout.” (The Washington Free Beacon32)
A contentious citizenship question that is being included on the 2020 Census won’t be removed despite a lawsuit against it. The Epoch Times says33, “The legal victory for the Trump administration came Feb. 8, when Judge Dabney Friedrich of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia threw out an application for a preliminary injunction filed by the Electronic Privacy Information Center.”
Quality of life is increasing34, which undoubtedly stems from enhanced financial confidence. According to Gallup35, not only do “69% expect their financial situation to improve over the next year,” but “optimism about finances over the next year is almost at a record-high level.” Moreover, half of Americans “say they are in better shape financially than a year ago.”
Not confined to the Catholic Church: “A new investigative piece by the Houston Chronicle and San Antonio Express-News has revealed an alleged 20-year-long sex scandal within the leadership of several Southern Baptist churches. According to the investigation, about 380 leaders and volunteers within the church have been accused of sexual misconduct.” (Townhall36)
Humor: Virginia Democrats announce they would only resign for a real scandal like getting caught wearing a MAGA hat (The Babylon Bee37)
Policy: It’s the one-year anniversary of the Parkland school shooting. The Heritage Foundation’s Amy Swearer dives into “The Role of Mental Illness in Mass Shootings, Suicides38.”
Policy: In The Daily Wire, Josh Hammer reminds us that Monday was “the fortieth anniversary of Iran’s disastrous Islamic Revolution — in which the last Shah of Iran, Reza Pahlavi, was overthrown in favor of a totalitarian, anti-Western, zealous, theocratic Islamist terrorist regime.” Read more on why we should “Stand With The Iranian People Against Their Tyrannical Regime39.”

OPINION IN BRIEF
Rich Lowry: “There were two victims in the horrific attack earlier this month on Jennifer Irigoyen in New York City. But the state’s law recognizes only one of them. Anthony Hobson allegedly dragged his pregnant former girlfriend into the stairwell of her Queens apartment building and stabbed her in the stomach, neck and torso. Irigoyen was in her second trimester. Neither she nor her unborn child survived. The Queens district attorney initially announced that Hobson would be charged with second-degree murder and abortion, reasonably enough, considering that he stands accused of killing both Irigoyen and her child. Then he dropped the abortion charge in light of the state’s radical new pro-abortion law. … It doesn’t take much moral insight to realize that stabbing to death an unborn child is a profound wrong that deserves to be treated as a crime. But America’s abortion advocates specialize in moral obtuseness. They are opposed to recognition of personhood of any sort for the unborn child, worried that such a concession might undermine the premises of our sweepingly latitudinarian abortion regime. Such protections raise the question: If an assailant can’t kill a fetus, why can anyone else?”
SHORT CUTS
Upright: “Just because the Democrats do not go on random Twitter tirades does not mean they are better characters. Despite all the President’s flaws, the Democrats are okay with killing kids. They’ve actually shifted to the left on this issue pretty dramatically. They are way more openly hostile to people of faith than they were just four years ago.” —Erick Erickson
Blame Game: “This is spurred on by the president, and until the Republican Party is willing to address that real threat, they have no business weighing in on [Rep. Ilhan Omar’s anti-Semitic tweets].” —former Hillary Clinton campaign official Jess McIntosh
Blame Game II: “We need to think about doing what’s right and what’s right for Virginians and what’s right overall. The race issue in today’s day and age with the president at the helm who has been one of the most divisive presidents and, frankly, racist himself, is a conversation we do need to have, but looking at just the line of order and saying, ‘No we’re not going to do that because of the consequence,’ is not the right way to do this.” —Rep. Nanette Barragan (D-CA) on whether Virginia’s top three Democrats should resign because of scandal
Non Compos Mentis: “The average tax refund is down about $170 compared to last year. Let’s call the President’s tax cut what it is: a middle-class tax hike to line the pockets of already wealthy corporations and the 1%.” —Kamala Harris (If refunds are down, it’s because people paid less all year long.)
There’s egg on your face: “Sen. Cory Booker (D., N.J.) said the planet ‘can’t sustain’ people eating meat, as the 2020 hopeful aims to become the first vegan president. Booker told the vegan magazine VegNews earlier this month that he became vegan after coming to the realization that eating eggs ‘didn’t align with my spirit.’” —The Washington Free Beacon
And last… “Good that some Dems have condemned the disgraceful anti-Semitic remarks of Rep. Omar — but their words are empty unless Dem leaders remove her from the Foreign Affairs Committee. No one with her anti-Semitic views should be allowed to represent US foreign policy on that committee.” —Steve Scalise
