FEATURED ANALYSIS

The Border Wall Standoff: What Do Latinos and Hispanics Think?10

Mark Alexander

Donald Trump11 upped the ante Saturday in the poker standoff with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her gang of Democrat obstructionists.

In my analysis on the partial government shutdown showdown over the border12 three weeks ago, I predicted that Trump would seek “some concession from Democrats by using Barack Obama’s illegal Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals13 (DACA) deceit as a bargaining chip.” That could come by offering green cards to the children of illegal immigrants already in the U.S., but not a path to citizenship.

In exchange for the $5.7 billion he has requested for border security14, Trump formally put that DACA offer on the table, offering a three-year extension of protections for 700,000 immigrants who entered the U.S. illegally as children and protected from deportation under the Obama DACA political play. He also included an extension of protection for 300,000 aliens who have been granted Temporary Protected Status — those who can’t safely return to their home countries.

Endeavoring to corner Democrats, Trump noted, “Our immigration system should be a source of pride, not a source of shame as it is all over the world. … If we are successful in this effort, we will have the best chance in a long time at real, bipartisan immigration reform. And it won’t stop here; it will keep going until we do it all.”

Amid some protests from Republicans, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Trump had offered a “bold solution,” adding, “Compromise in divided government means that everyone can’t get everything they want every time. The President’s proposal reflects that. It strikes a fair compromise by incorporating priorities from both sides of the aisle.”

Predictably, Pelosi rebuffed the offer15, noting, “It is unlikely that any one of these provisions alone would pass the House, and taken together, they are a non-starter.” She then, in effect, provided a counteroffer, saying, “For one thing, this proposal does not include the permanent solution for the Dreamers and TPS recipients that our country needs and supports.” House Democrats plan to pass six bills to reopen government operations this week, which Pelosi insists Trump must sign before any further debate: “I am ready to sit down at any time after the government is opened and work to resolve all outstanding issues.”

According to Pew Research, the standoff has created the sharpest partisan divide16 on record. According to the survey, 88% of border-wall opponents “say it would not be acceptable to pass a bill that includes Trump’s request for wall funding, if that is the only way to end the shutdown,” while 72% of border-security supporters “say a bill to end the shutdown would be unacceptable if it does not include Trump’s funding request.”

But there is another poll from a reputable source that caught my attention last week. An NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll17 found that Hispanic and Latino approval of Trump surged 19 points in just one month18 and is now at 50%.

This finding seems counterintuitive. But Democrats, who are in effect advocating for open borders, hoping to appease their Hispanic and Latino constituencies while creating a future-voter pipeline, have run into a problem. A growing number of those constituents don’t want the deflationary job and wage competition from more illegals flooding in from Mexico and Central America. In December, the employment rate for Hispanics and Latinos fell to a record low. Democrats say they support a “living wage” but then advocate, in effect, an open border, which ensures that millions of working men and women will never break free of the minimum wage.

Media Badly Botches Story on Catholic Boys and Native American19

Thomas Gallatin

The Bible admonishes people to “be quick to listen and slow to speak” and to get the full story before judging a matter. Proverbs 18:17 observes, “The first to state his case seems right until another comes forward and examines him.” This past weekend demonstrated the wisdom of this warning, a lesson many within the mainstream media would do well to learn.

On the heels of the media biting on an uncorroborated anti-Trump BuzzFeed story20 only to have it reputed by none other than Robert Mueller, the MSM again swallowed another anti-Trump story hook, line, and sinker. On Saturday, many news outlets ran headlines similar to the Chicago Tribune’s, which stated21, “Catholic high school students in ‘MAGA’ hats mock Native American after D.C. rally, could face expulsion.” The Reuters headline read22, “Students in Trump hats mock Native American; school apologizes.”

Included in the reporting was an image of a young white man wearing a red MAGA hat and smiling while standing face to face with an old Native American man, who stands staring back at him while beating on a drum mere inches from his face. This, we are told, is “evidence” of both racism and bigotry on the part of the young white man. The MSM went on to report that a group of high-school boys from Covington Catholic High School in Kentucky had just attended the March for Life23 and while waiting for their bus at the Lincoln Memorial approached, surrounded, and mocked a group of Native Americans who were gathered there singing and drumming.

The Native American in the picture is Nathan Phillips, who says he’s a Marine veteran of Vietnam. Speaking about the incident, Phillips alleged, “I heard them saying, ‘Build that wall, build that wall.’” And that version of events was uncritically reported across the country, primarily because it fits the broader MSM Narrative™ that President Donald Trump is responsible for fomenting racism and bigotry in his supporters.

The trouble is that the story as it was originally reported quickly fell apart after two-plus hours of additional video footage of the event in question came out. First, the reporting that the high-school boys were the aggressors is patently false. The group of Native Americans confronted the boys, at first walking into their midst in such a way that the boys clearly did not understand what was occurring. Second, the widely reported narrative that the boys were chanting “Build that wall” is not evidenced by any of the video footage. Third, the charge that the boys were hurling various racist epithets is not borne out in the video footage, either, and in fact it was the boys who were themselves the recipients of abusive, vulgar, and racist taunts and insults. As Robby Soave from Reason writes24, “This is shaping up to be one of the biggest major media misfires in quite some time.”

Following the MSM’s reckless reporting, these young men, who as video evidence demonstrates behaved rather honorably given the verbal abuse they endured, have been branded as racist bigots and now may even face expulsion from their school.

The young man in the infamous photograph, Nick Sandmann, recently released a statement24 explaining his side, and the video footage clearly backs his account.

If Leftmedia pontificators wonder why so many Americans increasing question the accuracy of their news coverage, they need look no further than this ridiculous circus.

Publisher’s Note

Last Friday, I cautiously reported20 on allegations from a dubious media source that President Donald Trump had instructed his former attorney, Michael Cohen, to lie to Congress on his behalf. The caution was warranted.

In a rare response25 regarding what would constitute a leak about Cohen’s testimony, Peter Carr, spokesman for Robert Mueller’s office, said, “BuzzFeed’s description of specific statements to the Special Counsel’s Office, and characterization of documents and testimony obtained by this office, regarding Michael Cohen’s Congressional testimony are not accurate.”

According to Trump’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani, “Any suggestion — from any source — that the president counseled Michael Cohen to lie is categorically false. Michael Cohen is a convicted criminal and a liar. … Today’s claims are just more made-up lies born of Michael Cohen’s malice and desperation, in an effort to reduce his sentence.”

Andrew McCarthy writes26, “Clearly, Mueller did the right thing. The reporting had triggered a frenzy of commentary by Trump critics that impeachment was imminent, and even many chagrined Trump supporters conceded that, if the report was true, the presidency was in grave peril. Had Mueller stood idly by, the administration, and thus the governance of the nation, would have been engulfed in a ruinous storm of suspicion. It is not the special counsel’s job to correct bad reporting, but it would have been irresponsible to stay mum in these circumstances if the story was false.”

That notwithstanding, with Democrats in control Congress, expect to hear a renewed chorus of howls27 to investigate and impeach Trump.

OPINION IN BRIEF

Michael Barone: “Most Democratic politicians and, polls show, many Democratic voters favored border barriers before Trump’s victory. Now they insist walls are ‘immoral’ and ‘ineffective.’ The struggle over Brexit is more complex in Britain. One thing is clear: The incompetence of Prime Minister Theresa May, against whom Trump looks like a smooth operator. May voted against Brexit, and her pledge ‘Brexit means Brexit’ has been undermined, purposefully or by blunder, in her negotiations with the European Union. … Under 2017 legislation, Britain leaves the EU March 29 and, if there’s no agreement with the EU, will come under the low-tariff rules of the World Trade Organization. Elites predict that this ‘hard Brexit’ will produce dreadful economic woes. Their similar predictions after the 2016 referendum conspicuously failed to occur. … Diehard resistance by outraged elites, breathtaking incompetence by elected leaders: It seems to be a pattern on both sides of the Atlantic. Another similarity is the danger of a sudden empowerment of the left. … Perhaps the financial, political and media elites who haven’t yet given up on overturning Brexit and ousting Trump might give some thought to the alternatives. Perhaps they might even practice the acceptance that they preached to Brexit and Trump supporters before they knew the outcomes they themselves still feel no obligation to respect.”

SHORT CUTS

The Gipper: “It is not my intention to do away with government. It is rather to make it work — work with us, not over us; stand by our side, not ride on our back. Government can and must provide opportunity, not smother it; foster productivity, not stifle it.”

For the record: “If any Republican congressional leader had similarly rebuffed President Obama — disinviting him to speak before Congress in his State of the Union speech — he or she would have been savaged as a disrespectful, partisan monster, not to mention a racist.” —David Limbaugh

Non Compos Mentis: “I am calling for a total and complete shutdown of teenagers wearing MAGA hats19 until we can figure out what is going on. They seem to be poisoning young minds.” —Rep. John Yarmuth

And they would be correct: “The larger message that a lot of people are going to take from this [BuzzFeed] story is that the news media are a bunch of leftist liars who are dying to get the president and that they’re willing to lie to do it.” —CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin

Non sequitur: “I think that concerns of anti-Semitism with the current administration and White House are absolutely valid. And we need to make sure that we are protecting the Jewish community and all who feel vulnerable in this moment.” —Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez when asked, “What would you say to some of those people who have concerns about anti-Semitism within the Women’s March?”

The BIG Lie: “To Mike Pence29, who thinks it’s acceptable that his wife works at a school that bans LGBTQ: You are wrong. You said you should not discriminate against Christianity. You are the worst representation of what it means to be a Christian. I am a Christian woman, and what I do know about Christianity is that we bear no prejudice and everybody is welcome. So you can take all that disgrace, Mr. Pence, and look yourself in the mirror and you’ll find it right there.” —Lady Gaga

And last… “A LOT of journalists need to quickly apologize for their roles in spreading false information in recent days, be it the evidence-free BuzzFeed false report/wild speculation about Trump or leading a misinformed outrage mob against children, or both.” —Mollie Hemingway
