THE FOUNDATION

“Let the American youth never forget, that they possess a noble inheritance, bought by the toils, and sufferings, and blood of their ancestors; and capacity, if wisely improved, and faithfully guarded, of transmitting to their latest posterity all the substantial blessings of life, the peaceful enjoyment of liberty, property, religion, and independence.” —Joseph Story (1833)

IN BRIEF

Goodell Concedes, Tells NFL Players to Stand for Anthem1

By Thomas Gallatin

This is what happens when you allow company employees to essentially give customers the middle finger and then defend your employees’ behavior as a right to express themselves, all while insinuating that it is customers who are in the wrong for finding the behavior offensive2. The business loses those customers, or in the NFL’s case, fans. Those fans, tired of being insulted by self-righteous NFL players, have begun rejecting the league in droves, not bothering to waste large sums of money for tickets and even tuning out of televised games. NFL team owners are beginning to panic. Hence the memo3 released by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on Tuesday.

The memo reads in part:

Like many of our fans, we believe that everyone should stand for the National Anthem. It is an important moment in our game. We want to honor our flag and our country, and our fans expect that of us. We also care deeply about our players and respect their opinions and concerns about critical social issues. The controversy over the Anthem is a barrier to having honest conversations and making real progress on the underlying issues. We need to move past this controversy, and we want to do that together with our players.

It’s also worth noting that the NFL has enjoyed huge tax breaks as a “nonprofit,” as well as substantial taxpayer assistance for the building of its stadiums. With NFL ratings continuing to tank, it’s likely this change of policy came about more out of concern over shrinking profits rather than any newfound patriotic conviction. Nonetheless, this policy change is a win for NFL fans and Americans in general.

What most Americans know and what it appears many NFL players need to learn is that whatever one’s grievance may be, protesting against America’s primary symbols — symbols that represent the only nation in the history of the world whose sole reason for existence is the promotion of Liberty — is to contradict the very notion of their protest. Moreover, if one’s protest is designed to shed light on a legitimate issue of grievance, broadly insulting the entire nation and those who have bled and died for the country they love only serves to offend and alienate people who might have otherwise listened.

Hollywood Hypocrisy on Weinstein Is Off the Charts4

By Nate Jackson

By now everyone knows the basic allegations against longtime Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein. After The New York Times exposed “decades of sexual harassment accusations” last week5, The New Yorker turned up the heat6 yesterday with three allegations of actual rape. (That’s after NBC News inexplicably passed on the scoop7.) And while Weinstein was the primary villain, The New Yorker adds this: “A female executive with the company described how Weinstein assistants and others served as a ‘honeypot’ — they would initially join a meeting, but then Weinstein would dismiss them, leaving him alone with the woman.” In other words, he had accomplices.

Aside from the actual alleged crimes committed by Weinstein, a sick man whose wife has left him and who’s now in Europe for sex addiction therapy, the primary theme here is hypocrisy.

Hypocrisy from those in Hollywood who knew about Weinstein’s behavior without speaking up (or, worse, who aided him), all while advancing the Left’s “war on women” nonsense as if Republicans are the real villains. And hypocrisy from Democrats who happily lined their own pockets with donations from Weinstein while politically advancing that same phony narrative.

Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama stand out, though we do note that, nearly a week after the story broke, both were finally shamed8 into speaking out against Weinstein. Obama’s daughter Malia interned for Weinstein, and the movie mogul raised millions of dollars for Democrats and Obama specifically. No wonder it took him a week to say anything about being “disgusted by the recent reports.”

As for Clinton, who made the bizarre assertion9 that Trump was a creep in the second presidential debate, she was “shocked and appalled” by the allegations. She did not — on record, anyway — fault Weinstein’s accusers for “bimbo eruptions” as with the women who accused her husband of rape10. Maybe she’s too busy coping with Chardonnay11.

A final note: Rather than simply return Weinstein’s money and wash their hands of the affair, Democrats are essentially laundering the money to leftist organizations like Emily’s List that work to elect Democrats.

FEATURED ANALYSIS
Californication Reaches New Lows28

By Lewis Morris

Never let it be said that the state of California lets logic get in the way of its decisions. Gov. Jerry “Moonbeam” Brown signed a law29 last week that reduces from felony to misdemeanor the act of knowingly exposing a sexual partner to HIV. Also, people who donate blood are no longer obligated to let blood banks know that they are HIV positive. The reason for doing this is because … well, let’s face it — there is no logical reason for doing this.

Nevertheless, State Sen. Scott Wiener, one of the bill’s authors, tried: “Today California took a major step toward treating HIV as a public health issue, instead of treating people living with HIV as criminals. HIV should be treated like all other serious infectious diseases, and that’s what SB 239 does.”

Really? Was California treating HIV positive people like criminals before this law was passed? This statement sounds like an example from the Barack Obama Straw Man 101 manual.

There’s no question that carrying HIV is a significant burden. It’s a disease for which there is currently no cure, only treatments for symptoms. Patients must adhere to a lifelong diet of drugs and therapy to keep the virus in check. But thanks to medical advances, the effects of HIV can be reduced, and the virus is no longer automatically assumed to lead directly to AIDS, which just a few years ago was considered a death sentence.

Yet the price of carrying this illness is a responsibility to keep from spreading it to others. Some states carry heavy penalties for people who knowingly spread HIV to unsuspecting sexual partners. California is now saying that committing such a heinously selfish act is no big deal. It’s hard to comprehend a worse signal to be sent by the nation’s most populous state, though that’s not for the state’s lack of effort to send terrible signals.

The Golden State isn’t just sitting on the sidelines when it comes to issues of sex, however. California is totally on the case when it comes to “misusing” gender pronouns. Nursing home and long-term care facilities there can now be hit with $1,500 fines30 for “willfully and repeatedly” using the “wrong” gender pronouns with transgender patients. This is part of the state’s LGBT Senior Bill of Rights. It’s ironic that the state’s reduction in punishment for deliberately spreading HIV will probably lead to fewer people in senior care facilities, particularly given that sexual deviants are far more likely to contract it.

With this kind of backward thinking among the nation’s leftist elite, it’s no wonder that STDs are on the rise31 again after years of meaningful declines. Gonorrhea, syphilis and chlamydia were at historic lows just a few years ago, but the CDC warns that incidences of all three sexually transmitted diseases are rising again nationwide.

Part of the reason is because of a reduced lack of focus in communicating the ravages of these illnesses. But it cannot be denied that dumbing down the moral and medical cost of promiscuous lifestyles is also to blame. It’s often said that as California goes, so goes the rest of the nation. Let’s hope that’s no longer the case, because that state is going off the rails and the rest of the nation shouldn’t follow.

OPINION IN BRIEF

Walter Williams: “Let me ask you a question. Do I have a right to place my wallet on the roof of my car, go into my house, have lunch, take a nap and return to my car and find my wallet just where I placed it? I think I have every right to do so, but the real question is whether it would be a wise decision. Some college women get stoned, use foul language and dance suggestively. I think they have a right to behave that way and not be raped or sexually assaulted. But just as in the example of my placing my wallet on the roof of my car, I’d ask whether it is wise behavior. Many of our problems, both at our institutions of higher learning and in the nation at large, stem from the fact that we’ve lost our moral compasses and there’s not a lot of interest in reclaiming them. As a matter of fact, most people don’t see our major problems as having anything to do with morality.”

SHORT CUTS

Insight: “Justice without force is impotent. Force without justice is tyranny. Unable to make what is just strong, we have made what is strong just.” —Blaise Pascal (1623- 1662)

That’s racist! “[Cowboys owners] Jerry Jones … says he’s going to suspend any player who doesn’t stand [for the national anthem]. … ‘Plantation mentality.’ That’s what it comes off as.” —ESPN host Michael Wilbon

Village Idiots: “I feel very bad for Harvey Weinstein right now. I don’t think it’s right what’s going on. I think Georgina needs to take a stand and be there for her husband.” —Lindsay Lohan

Will he return campaign contributions? “Michelle and I have been disgusted by the recent reports about Harvey Weinstein4. Any man who demeans and degrades women in such fashion needs to be condemned and held accountable, regardless of wealth or status. We should celebrate the courage of women who have come forward to tell these painful stories. And we all need to build a culture — including by empowering our girls and teaching our boys decency and respect — so we can make such behavior less prevalent in the future.” —Barack Obama

Will she return campaign contributions? “I was shocked and appalled by the revelations about Harvey Weinstein. The behavior described by women coming forward cannot be tolerated.” —Hillary Clinton (Except, apparently, with her husband.)

Friendly fire: “It’s good Clinton broke her silence. Of course, it is too bad she was one of the last to do so.” —CNN’s Erin Burnett

And last… “The Left has finally found the only immigrant in history who had no right to come to America. The only one who didn’t improve the place by his presence. His name? Christopher Columbus. His crime? Violating the sovereignty of the people who lived here already. Plus, he was the wrong ethnicity. Try making that argument about any other immigrant to America and see how long you keep your job.” —Tucker Carlson
