THE FOUNDATION
“Let the American youth never forget, that they possess a noble inheritance, bought by the toils, and sufferings, and blood of their ancestors; and capacity, if wisely improved, and faithfully guarded, of transmitting to their latest posterity all the substantial blessings of life, the peaceful enjoyment of liberty, property, religion, and independence.” —Joseph Story (1833)
IN BRIEF
Goodell Concedes, Tells NFL Players to Stand for Anthem1
By Thomas Gallatin
This is what happens when you allow company employees to essentially give customers the middle finger and then defend your employees’ behavior as a right to express themselves, all while insinuating that it is customers who are in the wrong for finding the behavior offensive2. The business loses those customers, or in the NFL’s case, fans. Those fans, tired of being insulted by self-righteous NFL players, have begun rejecting the league in droves, not bothering to waste large sums of money for tickets and even tuning out of televised games. NFL team owners are beginning to panic. Hence the memo3 released by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on Tuesday.
The memo reads in part:
Like many of our fans, we believe that everyone should stand for the National Anthem. It is an important moment in our game. We want to honor our flag and our country, and our fans expect that of us. We also care deeply about our players and respect their opinions and concerns about critical social issues. The controversy over the Anthem is a barrier to having honest conversations and making real progress on the underlying issues. We need to move past this controversy, and we want to do that together with our players.
It’s also worth noting that the NFL has enjoyed huge tax breaks as a “nonprofit,” as well as substantial taxpayer assistance for the building of its stadiums. With NFL ratings continuing to tank, it’s likely this change of policy came about more out of concern over shrinking profits rather than any newfound patriotic conviction. Nonetheless, this policy change is a win for NFL fans and Americans in general.
What most Americans know and what it appears many NFL players need to learn is that whatever one’s grievance may be, protesting against America’s primary symbols — symbols that represent the only nation in the history of the world whose sole reason for existence is the promotion of Liberty — is to contradict the very notion of their protest. Moreover, if one’s protest is designed to shed light on a legitimate issue of grievance, broadly insulting the entire nation and those who have bled and died for the country they love only serves to offend and alienate people who might have otherwise listened.
Hollywood Hypocrisy on Weinstein Is Off the Charts4
By Nate Jackson
By now everyone knows the basic allegations against longtime Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein. After The New York Times exposed “decades of sexual harassment accusations” last week5, The New Yorker turned up the heat6 yesterday with three allegations of actual rape. (That’s after NBC News inexplicably passed on the scoop7.) And while Weinstein was the primary villain, The New Yorker adds this: “A female executive with the company described how Weinstein assistants and others served as a ‘honeypot’ — they would initially join a meeting, but then Weinstein would dismiss them, leaving him alone with the woman.” In other words, he had accomplices.
Aside from the actual alleged crimes committed by Weinstein, a sick man whose wife has left him and who’s now in Europe for sex addiction therapy, the primary theme here is hypocrisy.
Hypocrisy from those in Hollywood who knew about Weinstein’s behavior without speaking up (or, worse, who aided him), all while advancing the Left’s “war on women” nonsense as if Republicans are the real villains. And hypocrisy from Democrats who happily lined their own pockets with donations from Weinstein while politically advancing that same phony narrative.
Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama stand out, though we do note that, nearly a week after the story broke, both were finally shamed8 into speaking out against Weinstein. Obama’s daughter Malia interned for Weinstein, and the movie mogul raised millions of dollars for Democrats and Obama specifically. No wonder it took him a week to say anything about being “disgusted by the recent reports.”
As for Clinton, who made the bizarre assertion9 that Trump was a creep in the second presidential debate, she was “shocked and appalled” by the allegations. She did not — on record, anyway — fault Weinstein’s accusers for “bimbo eruptions” as with the women who accused her husband of rape10. Maybe she’s too busy coping with Chardonnay11.
A final note: Rather than simply return Weinstein’s money and wash their hands of the affair, Democrats are essentially laundering the money to leftist organizations like Emily’s List that work to elect Democrats.

FEATURED ANALYSIS Californication Reaches New Lows28
By Lewis Morris
Never let it be said that the state of California lets logic get in the way of its decisions. Gov. Jerry “Moonbeam” Brown signed a law29 last week that reduces from felony to misdemeanor the act of knowingly exposing a sexual partner to HIV. Also, people who donate blood are no longer obligated to let blood banks know that they are HIV positive. The reason for doing this is because … well, let’s face it — there is no logical reason for doing this.
