Buried on the Cross
William R. Newell

Nearly all theological teaching since the Reformation has failed to set forth clearly our judicial end in death with Christ on the Cross.  The fatal result of this terrible error is to leave the Law as claimant over those in Christ: for 'law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth' (Romans 7:1).  Unless you . . . believe . . . that you died unto sin with Christ, that you were buried, and that your history before God in Adam the first came to an utter end at Calvary, you will never get free from the claims of the Law upon your life and conscience.

Christ didn’t come to do away with the law but to fulfill it.

Matt 5:17  Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

We are still to keep the commandments.

Matt 19:17  And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.

John 12:50  And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.

John 14:15  If ye love me, keep my commandments.

John 14:21  He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

John 15:10  If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.

Rom 7:12  Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.

1John 2:3-4  And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.  He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

The commandments will be around until the end of time

Rev 12:17  And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.

Rev 14:12  Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.

Rev 22:14  Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

We are dead to law so we can be wed to another. That other is Christ and His new commandment

Rom 7:4  Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.

Gal 2:19  For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God.

We serve Christ in the spirit of the law not in the letter of the law.

Rom 7:6  But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.

2Co 3:6  Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.

Christ’s new commandment is to love one another

John 13:34  A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

John 15:12  This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.

1John 3:23  And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.

1John 4:21  And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.

Love fulfills the spirit of the law

Rom 13:10  Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

Gal 5:14  For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

Matt 22:38-40  This is the first and great commandment.   And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.  On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

1John 5:2-3  By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.  For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

2John 1:5-6  And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another.  And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.

We are not to try to get ourselves or our consciences out from under the law, or to teach others to do so.

Matt 5:19  Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

1Tim 1:5  Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:

Very Good...

Reminded my of two scriptures;

Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief. (Mk 9:24)

The Lord helps us with our unbelief.

And, it is essential to believe He came and died to take away sin.

I go my way, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sins: whither I go, ye cannot come.
And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world.
I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins. (Jhn 8:21-24)

Only when one is saved can he know he has been losed from the Law, that he might be married to another. (Rom 7:1-3)

Speaking of the church (the bride of Christ), of which those who belong to Jesus are members in particular.

All others can never understand these things.

Blessings,
Petro

Good point Petro, the Lord helps us with our unbelief but He doesn't do it alone we must be involved.

I couldn't agree more, as long as we realize that isn't all that is essential.

Quote
Only when one is saved can he know he has been losed from the Law, that he might be married to another. (Rom 7:1-3)

But of course that is not what Rom 7:1-3 says.

Rom 7:1  Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth?
Rom 7:2  For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband.
Rom 7:3  So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man.

This says to those who know that law that they should be aware that as long as the law liveth in them they are bound to do it.  That only when they are dead to the law can they be bound to another set of instructions (the new commandments of Jesus and the message of the Gospel that must be obeyed).  It says nothing of being saved and/or knowing it.

michael,

When you get done with Galatians, you may want to read the bbok of Romans.

Notice;

Rom 7
4  Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.
5  For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.
6  But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.

You really should study scripture, rather than other mens writings (the catechisms do not teach scripture), you won't stumble around at the word if you do.

the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Heb 4:12

And above all things, it can;

make you wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.  (2 Tim 3:15)

That makes two praying for you...

Petro you and Crusader should read the whole Bible and stop focusing so narrowly on Paul's writings that you interpret them in a way that is contrary to the rest of the Word of God.

Read some of what Christ taught you will get a much better understanding of what Paul was trying to say.  After all it is His Gospel not Paul's so if your understanding of it is contrary to what Jesus taught, it is you and not I that are preaching another Gospel.

Crusader:

I think I understand what William Newell is trying to say, but he has only presented half the truth.  The Scriptures which Michael Legna has posted are the other half, and unless we teach both halves, we are preaching only half the Gospel.

Christ lived the Law perfectly, and He also fulfilled the Law and all it's just demands perfectly. He then nailed the Law to the cross by taking upon Himself the curse of the Law.

But He also established the Law of Christ, the Law of Love, the Royal Law, by first summarizing the entire Law and Prophets with the two greatest commandments, then giving us the final commandment -- that we love one other as Christ loved us.  Thus love becomes the fulfilling of the Law in each of our lives by the power of the Holy Spirit :

"Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: FOR HE THAT LOVETH ANOTHER HATH FULFILLED THE LAW.  For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment IT IS BRIEFLY COMPREHENDED [included] IN THIS SAYING, NAMELY, THOU SHALT LOVE THY NEIGHBOUR AS THYSELF.  Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: THEREFORE LOVE IS THE FULFILLING OF THE LAW" (Rom. 13:8-10).

The Law of Love has claims upon all our consciences and lives, and unless this is clearly taught, we are misrepresenting Christ. The "Love Chapter" is there in 1 Corinthians 13 to teach us this Law of Love and to show us that ultimately Love -- Agape -- is God's greatest spiritual gift, and it is a gift given to every child of God by the indwelling Holy Spirit.
