There are some important things to know about Prophecy, specifically Bible Prophecy from God. First, let's read a key portion of Scripture that definitely applies:
1 Corinthians 13:8-13 KJV 8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. 9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. 10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. 11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. 12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. 13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.
Prophecy is one of the "sign gifts" given directly by God. 1 Corinthians 13:8-13 mentions things that will "cease" (end) when that which is perfect is come. The perfect has already come: the completed Holy Bible - God's Word to mankind.
However, there are two kinds of Prophecy:
Forthtell: Share the Word of God from the Holy Bible that is already recorded Bible Prophecy. This type of Prophecy has not ceased. Recorded Bible Prophecy is a difficult topic that requires considerable study and maturity to share it. Those who care deeply about God's Word do not add to or take away from God's Word. In fact, God tells us not to add to or take away, especially in the area of recorded Bible Prophecy. So, forthtelling Bible Prophecy should be done carefully and as accurately as possible - true to God's Word. An obedient servant of God should have no shame in saying "I don't know" or "there could be numerous interpretations" to many details in Bible Prophecy. In fact, this would be the only right answer in many cases.
Foretell: A Prophet is chosen by God to share God's Word for the future. This office has been closed (ended) for almost 2,000 years. A True Prophet speaks on behalf of God with 100% accuracy. So, do many men want to call themselves Prophets? The answer is obviously no. Think about John and the Book of Revelation.
Revelation 22:18-21 KJV 18 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: 19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. 20 He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus. 21 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.
