The Foundation

"Labor to keep alive in your breast that little spark of celestial fire called conscience." --George Washington

Editorial Exegesis

"Nancy Pelosi said Monday that 'we haven't really gotten the credit for what we have done,' and the Speaker is right. However, it appears that her party will get that credit on November 2, which is why so many Democrats are now jumping the liberal ship, at least symbolically, to save their seats. ... Mississippi Democrat Gene Taylor ... [said] that he won't support Mrs. Pelosi for Speaker, another revelation considering his vote for her in 2009. 'I'm very disappointed in how she's veered to the left,' Mr. Taylor said, as if Mrs. Pelosi's ideological predispositions were ever hidden. Mr. Taylor joins a growing list of Democrats who voted for Mrs. Pelosi in 2009 but now profess to be shocked by her left turn. They include Idaho's Walt Minnick, Pennsylvania's Jason Altmire, Alabama's Bobby Bright and Texas's Chet Edwards, endangered incumbents all. Brett Carter, who is hoping to replace Tennessee Democrat Barton Gordon, has gone even further and requested that Mrs. Pelosi not even run again for the Speakership. 'Voters in my district believe that you do not represent their values, and my opposition has little to offer apart from critiquing your leadership,' Mr. Carter wrote in a September letter. ... Over in the Senate, the prize for distancing himself from his party goes to West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin, who ran the famous TV ad featuring him literally putting a bullet through the 'cap and trade bill.' Apparently that wasn't politically far enough away from the Washington Democrats he hopes to join, so Mr. Manchin declared on Fox News Sunday that he would have voted against ObamaCare too. ... Remind us again why these folks are running as Democrats?" --The Wall Street Journal1

Upright

"Either this is just the end of a big election that rolls back a few important mistakes, but basically changes little besides who gets the good parking spaces and whose staffers get to cash in for a few years. Or this is the beginning a great reformation that will take America back for liberty. It's up to the people. We are so close. In 50 years in politics, I have never seen as large a percentage of the public self-motivated for reformation. For those of us who believe we are a providential country, now is the chance for the public to demonstrate it." --columnist Tony Blankley

"The Democrats are about to be beaten by something they do not in their heart of hearts think exists, a huge national majority. ... That majority is amiable, sensible and believes in limited government. It is convinced that we face a catastrophic budget crisis and that measures must be taken against the spending and on behalf of growth. ... The liberals show no hint that they realize this, but the American majority does. Now that majority has to deal with the mess we are in. As for the liberals, they have to explain why they are summarily leaving office." --columnist R. Emmett Tyrrell Jr.

"Team Obama's message in the closing weeks of the campaign was completely eclipsed Friday by a union official who openly boasted in a story reported by The Wall Street Journal: 'We don't like to brag,' but 'we're the big dog' when it comes to campaign funding. Big as in $87.5 million. Big as in the biggest spender of any outside group -- all meant to protect the interests of unions, the new 'privileged class.' But wait a minute: Team O led us to believe that honor went to the vilified U.S. Chamber of Commerce and all of its alleged contributions from 'foreign money' sponsors." --columnist Mark McKinnon

"All of these [European] countries -- and many more -- are going through painful retrenchments because they spent too much money, made too many promises and expected too little from their own citizens. The era of European austerity is upon us, because the Europeans -- or at least those in charge -- understand the mess they've made of their economies. This should present a real problem for Barack Obama and the vast (though shrinking) chorus of experts, editorialists and activists who support his agenda. In broad terms, all of the policies Obama and the Democrats have pushed are the sorts of policies the British, the French and other Europeans had for years, even decades." --columnist Jonah Goldberg

The Demo-gogues

A call for conservatives to vote: "My name may not be on the ballot, but our agenda for moving forward is on the ballot, and I need everybody to turn out." --Barack Obama

Blame game: "[The recession] started long before I took office. ... [Republicans] figure you're going to forget, because you're angry. This election isn't about anger, it isn't about fear. This election is about a choice, and the stakes couldn't be higher2." --Barack Obama

The great divider: "If Latinos sit out the election instead of saying, 'We're gonna punish our enemies and we're gonna reward our friends who stand with us on issues that are important to us,' if they don't see that kind of upsurge in voting in this election, then I think it's gonna be harder and that's why I think it's so important that people focus on voting on November 2." --Barack Obama explaining on Univision why he hasn't passed immigration reform

"It's not enough to just play politics. You can't focus on the next election. You've got to focus on the next generation." --BO (By making them slaves to debt?)

Poor thing: "[W]e haven't really gotten the credit for what we have done." --House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), who doesn't realize that's exactly why Democrats are losing

Can you dig it? "We found ourselves in a hole that I didn't dig, but I have dug, dug and dug to try to get out of that hole." --Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), who forgot that when you find yourself in a hole (that Democrats did dig), stop digging

Another Biden gaffe: "I was amazed at the amount of money [for campaigns] -- this $200 billion of money that is -- where there's no accountability. When I say accountability, we don't know where it's coming from. There's no disclosure, so the folks watching the ad can't make a judgment based upon motive when you say it's paid for by so-and-so. ... I've never seen this before, so the only caveat I'd put in terms of the House is how much impact this $200 billion are going [sic] to mean." --Vice President Joe Biden3, who clearly meant to say "million," not "billion"

What a guy: "I've got to go home to tuck in the girls and walk the dog and scoop the poop." --BO explaining why he could not stay for a $7,500-a-plate fundraising dinner in Rhode Island

Rosa Parks he isn't: "We don't mind the Republicans joining us. They can come for the ride, but they gotta sit in back." --Barack Obama on "bipartisanship"

Editor's Note: After repeatedly quoting the Declaration of Independence without referencing "endowed by their Creator," Barack Obama finally discovered the Creator this weekend, correctly quoting the Declaration in four different speeches. See for yourself and let us know what you think4.

Village Idiots

You don't say: "There's too much at stake to turn back now." --Michelle Obama, offering yet another reason to vote Tuesday2

Taking all the credit: "I almost gag when I hear these Republicans lambasting the president and the Democrats in Congress, 'Oh, they're such big spenders, they're just crazy, they're quasi-socialist.' I have a simple question: Who's the last president to give you a balanced budget? ... [F]rankly there are a few things about this election that have gotten me somewhere between disturbed and ticked off." --Bill Clinton

Gratuitous Hitler Reference: "You never get into a political discussion unless you bring the word Hitler in. ... He wasn't a majority guy, but he was charismatic and they were having bad economic times -- just like we are now -- people were out of work, they needed jobs and a guy came along and rallied the troops. My fear is that the Tea Party gets a charismatic leader, because all they're selling is fear and anger and that's all Hitler sold. 'I'm angry and I'm frightened and you should hate that guy over there.' ... And that's what they're doing." --director Rob "Meathead" Reiner

Keep beating the same drum: "Republicans are cynical about politics from the jump. Political cynicism fuels them. Democrats are idealistic about politics. When they become cynical they tend to drop out. Message to Obama: Whatever happens Nov. 2, don't move to the center. Push even harder for what you believe in. Message to Democrats: Whatever happens, keep the courage." --former Clintonista Robert Reich

Dezinformatsia

"[Juan Williams'] remarks were inconsistent with our editorial standards and practices, and undermined his credibility as a news analyst with NPR." --Statement issued by NPR

So how do others measure up to those standards?

"I think he ought to be worried about the -- about what's going on in the good Lord's mind, because if there's retributive justice, [Sen. Jesse Helms will] get AIDS from a transfusion, or one of his grandchildren will get it." --NPR's Nina Totenberg, July 1995

"I just want to say: Who are we? We are people who have always been for inspections of prisons, for some degree of human rights, and now we're defending neither.... We have now violated everything that we stand for. It is the first time in my life I have been ashamed of my country." --Nina Totenberg discussing secret CIA prisons for captured terrorists, Nov. 4, 2005

"[Glenn] Beck is worse than a clown. He's more like a terrorist who believes he has discovered the One True Faith, and condemns everyone else as a heretic. And that makes him something else as well -- a traitor to the American values he professes loudly to defend." --Cokie Roberts, March 2010

"It made me feel pretty good. I thought it was a great speech.... You know, a friend of mine said, 'Oh my God, we have a President again!' Now, in some ways, that's not fair to Bush, but that's the way you felt. You felt this was a guy who was totally in charge." --Nina Totenberg discussing President Obama's address to Congress, Feb. 27, 2009

"Israel has used Gaza as a bombing target practice." --NPR's foreign editor Loren Jenkins

Obama didn't spend enough! "America needed a much stronger program than what it actually got -- a modest rise in federal spending that was barely enough to offset cutbacks at the state and local level. This isn't 20-20 hindsight: the inadequacy of the stimulus was obvious from the beginning. Could the administration have gotten a bigger stimulus through Congress? Even if it couldn't, would it have been better off making the case for a bigger plan, rather than pretending that what it got was just right? We'll never know." --New York Times columnist Paul Krugman

"[I am touring] this great unwashed middle of the country. ... American voters are slightly schizophrenic -- they want compromise, and yet some of them are ideologically so fixated to one point of view.... There are a lot of moderate Americans who are just fed up with negative campaign ads, fed up with the vitriol, fed up with the paralysis." --CBS's Katie Couric

Newspulper Headlines:

Questions Nobody Is Asking: "Is Public Radio the Cure for Local News?" --Crosscut.com (Seattle)

Too Much Information: "Harry Reid: 'I've Never Had to Prove My Manhood to Anyone'" --Las Vegas Review Journal

Out on a Limb: "If Dems Lose, Obama Will Blame Everyone but Himself" --Washington Examiner

The Lonely Lives of Democrats: "Democrats Try to Woo Women as More Embrace GOP Candidates" --Washington Post website,

Life Imitates the Onion: "Democrats Could Lose Up to 8,000 Seats in Upcoming Midterm Election" --The Onion • "Republicans Put 99 Democrat-Held House Seats in Danger" --Politico.com

Bottom Stories of the Day: "Trial Lawyers Donate Millions of Dollars to Democratic Candidates" --ABA Journal

(Thanks to The Wall Street Journal's James Taranto5)

Short Cuts

"In 2008 Obama promised us the moon if elected President. Instead ... gullible Americans got mooned." --columnist Doug Giles

"National Public Radio is a monument to political correctness. Its acronym might better be thought of as 'not professionally responsible.' It is not a left-leaning organization. The Leaning Tower of Pisa leans. NPR has fallen over completely for the 'progressive' agenda. It is supine. Horizontal." --columnist Ken Blackwell

"The Chamber of Commerce ridiculed the White House claim Friday that it funnels foreign money to GOP candidates. The president made a point he didn't intend to make. We can't allow foreign money to steal our democracy, we need it to fund our debt." --comedian Argus Hamilton

"Why would anyone blame Obama for the deficit when all he did was double it?" --Wall Street Journal columnist James Taranto

"People you wouldn't trust around heavy machinery or sharp tools should never be trusted to run America. The only place they'll run it is into the ground." --columnist Burt Prelutsky

(Please pray for our Armed Forces standing in harm's way around the world, and for their families -- especially families of those fallen Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsmen, who granted their lives in defense of American liberty.)
