THE FOUNDATION

"A universal peace, it is to be feared, is in the catalogue of events, which will never exist but in the imaginations of visionary philosophers, or in the breasts of benevolent enthusiasts." --James Madison

FOR THE RECORD

"Let us note that if supposedly all-powerful Israel is dedicated to exterminating the Palestinian people, it is doing a bad job. The Palestinian population has only grown since 1948. There are more Arab citizens living in Israel proper today than there were in all of Palestine the year Israel was founded. Perhaps one reason Israel fails at genocide is that it isn't interested in genocide? That would explain why Israel warned thousands of Gazans by cell phone to leave homes near Hamas rocket stockpiles. It would clarify why, even amid all-out war, it offers aid to enemy civilians. It would even illuminate the otherwise mysterious clamor from Israelis for a viable 'peace partner.' But no. For millions of Israel haters, the more plausible explanation is that the 'defiant' Palestinians have miraculously survived Israel's determination to wipe them out. Meanwhile, calls for the complete extermination of Israel are routine. ... A sick mixture of Holocaust envy and Holocaust denial is the defining spirit of Hamas. ... It's Palestinian Islamists who have ideological and political ties to Nazism stretching back to the days of 'Hitler's Mufti,' Haj Amin al-Husseini, a happy warrior for the Nazi cause. So why the obsession with casting the Israelis as the new Hitlerites? One answer is surely that critics know such charges are painful to a country largely born of the Holocaust and marked by its scars. It also grabs attention, galvanizes radicals, vents legitimate frustrations and anger, and helps demonize the enemy and, hence, justify the murder of 'Zionists everywhere,' as Hamas often declares in its communiqués. But I think the desire to cast the Israelis as Nazis is fueled, deep down, by the haters' need to see their own hatreds and ambitions mirrored in their enemy's actions. Hamas has an avowedly Hitlerite agenda. The only way to make such an agenda defensible is to convince yourself and others that the Israelis deserve it. ...With Hamas, Hitlerism comes to the Middle East wearing the mask of anti-Hitlerism." --National Review editor Jonah Goldberg

OPINION IN BRIEF

"The only acceptable outcome of this war, both for Israel and for the civilized world, is ... the disintegration of Hamas rule. It is already underway. ... The one-step-from-madness gangster theocracy in Gaza -- just four days before the fighting, the Hamas parliament passed a sharia criminal code, legalizing, among other niceties, crucifixion -- is teetering on the brink. It can be brought down, but only if Israel is prepared -- and allowed -- to complete the real mission of this war. For the Bush State Department, in its last significant act, to prevent that with the premature imposition of a cease-fire would be not just self-defeating but shameful." --columnist Charles Krauthammer

CULTURE

"More than any other game, football illustrates our virtues as a people, reflecting our national identity and values. ... Perhaps the most important value football can remind Americans of today is justice. Americans love football because it rewards those who deserve to be rewarded. It does this because its rules are well known, commonsensical, and unchanging during any particular game and season, and also because what it takes to win in football transcends the natural physical talents of those who play it. ... It is why Americans are perennially optimistic. We believe in ourselves. We believe in the efficacy of our own hard work and determination. We believe that if we don't let up and keep playing by the rules, we will eventually win -- perhaps not in this particular game or this particular season, but certainly over the course of an honorable career. We have learned this from our national history and from our personal histories. This is the way America works. This is why America works. And this is what politicians must never change -- the rules of the American dream." --CNS News editor in chief Terence Jeffrey

FAITH AND FAMILY

"A medical journal [recently announced] a study comparing teens who take a pledge of virginity until marriage with those who don't. Lo and behold, when they crunch the numbers, they find not much difference between pledgers and nonpledgers: most do not make it to the marriage bed as virgins. ... In other words, teens will be teens, and moms or dads who believe that concepts such as restraint or morality have any application today are living in a dream world. ... Most parents appreciate that a pledge of virginity -- a one-time event that might be made at an emotional moment in a teen's life -- is not some talisman that will magically shield their sons and daughters from the strong and normal desires that grow as they discover their sexuality. What these parents hope to do is direct these desires in a way that recognizes sex as a great gift, which in the right circumstances fosters genuine intimacy between a man and a woman and at its freest offers the possibility of new life. This is not the prevailing view, of course. And these parents know it. Far from conformists living in a comfortable world where their beliefs are never challenged, these families live in an environment where most everything that is popular -- television, the movies, the Internet -- encourages children to grow up as quickly as possible while adults remain locked in perpetual adolescence. ... For these parents, the good news here is that the striking behavioral differences between the average American teen and the two teen groups in this study show that homes and families still exert a powerful influence. That, alas, is not something you're likely to read in the headlines." --News Corp. vice president William McGurn

LIBERTY

"Legalized corruption is widespread and that's the job of 35,000 Washington, D.C., lobbyists earning millions upon millions of dollars. They represent America's big and small corporations, big and small labor unions and even foreign corporations and unions. They are not spending billions of dollars in political contributions to encourage and assist the White House and Congress to uphold and defend the U.S. Constitution. They are spending that money in the expectations of favors that will be bestowed upon them at the expense of some other American or group of Americans. ... The only way to reduce corruption and money in Washington is to reduce the power politicians have over our lives." --George Mason University economics professor Walter E. Williams

THE GIPPER

"Is there anyone that isn't concerned with the energy problem? Government caused that problem while we all stood by unaware that we were involved. Unnecessary regulations and prices imposed -- price limits -- back in the '50's are the direct cause of today's crisis. Our crisis isn't because of a shortage of fuel; it's a surplus of government. ...[W]hen they tell us about the conservation -- of course we should save. No one should waste a natural resource. But they act as if we've found all the oil and gas there is to be found in this continent, if not the world. Do you know that 57 years ago our government told us we only had enough for 15 years? And 19 years went by and they told us we only had enough left for 13 more years. Now, we've done a lot of driving since then and we'll do a lot more if government would do one simple thing: get out of the way and let the incentives of the marketplace urge the industry out to find the sources of energy this country needs." --Ronald Reagan

GOVERNMENT

"Every critical decision that will be made regarding the economy will be made by Insulated Americans whose assets are substantial enough to keep them from being unduly affected by whatever folly they foist on the rest of us. No matter what kind of stupidity, short-term thinking, political correctness, or corruption emanates from the Oval Office or halls of Congress, our political ruling class will never want for all the necessities and most of the luxuries life affords -- even if the rest of America is standing on bread lines or living in tent cities. ... The sad reality is that the term 'citizen government' has become an oxymoron. Our political class has never been more removed from the average American and their interests. ... Perhaps we should concentrate on electing Exposed Americans to office: nothing concentrates the mind like having a direct stake in the decisions one makes. We already know how Insulated Americans run things -- right into the ground. Ground their feet will never touch." --columnist Arnold Ahlert

POLITICAL FUTURES

"Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has an identity problem. In blocking the lawful and legitimate appointment of Roland Burris -- admittedly tarnished by its maker, Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich -- the Nevada Democrat apparently thought that he was the king of Illinois, with the veto power over whom Illinois could send to the Senate. Yes, this is the new ethics-enriched Congress under Democratic leadership. Be it noted, this whole Burris mess could have been avoided if the Democratic-led Illinois Legislature had called a special election when ... Obama's seat was vacated. But Illinois solons were not willing to risk losing to a Republican win in a fair election. Thus, they handed Blagojevich an opening to wreak mischief by naming Burris.... Then Reid added to the damage. Burris has not been implicated in the Blagojevich corruption probe, yet King Harry impugned Burris -- then refused to seat him based on dubious Senate rules. Reid was acting as if the Senate is a club in which happily ensconced long-time members can refuse to admit entering riffraff. But it doesn't work that way." --columnist Debra Saunders

RE: THE LEFT

"After NBC canceled me 'for life' [last] Monday -- until seven or eight hours later when the ban was splashed across the top of The Drudge Report, forcing a red-faced NBC to withdraw the ban -- an NBC insider told The Drudge Report: 'We are just not interested in anyone so highly critical of President-elect Obama, right now,' explaining that 'it's such a downer. It's just not the time, and it's not what our audience wants, either.' In point of fact, I'm not particularly critical of Obama in my new book. I'm critical of the media for behaving like a protection racket for Obama rather than the constitutionally protected guardians of our liberty that they claim to be. So I think what the NBC insider meant to say is that NBC is not interested in anyone so highly critical of NBC right now. It's such a downer, it's just not the time, and it's not what their audience wants right now, either." --columnist Ann Coulter

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

(To submit reader comments visit our Letters to the Editor page.)

"Kudos for one of the best Patriot Post Digests yet! The questions asked of BHO, along with his elusiveness, lies and deception will come back to haunt him and his corrupt administration. Unfortunately, before that happens, it will haunt us, the American citizens." --Redmond, Oregon

"In your 09-01 Digest, you raised the issue of whether Obama is a natural-born citizen, since we do not have proof that he was born in Hawaii. However, one does not have to be born within the United States to be a natural-born citizen, as John McCain's own birth circumstances in the Panama Canal Zone prove. While we may dispute whether Obama was born in Hawaii, there is no dispute that his mother was an American citizen at the time of his birth, and based on that fact, Obama is a natural-born citizen irrespective of his place of birth." --La Mirada, California

Editor's Reply: McCain, yes (born on a U.S. military reservation), but not true with BHO. The only exceptions to the Article II and 14th Amendment constitutional prerequisites are defined by law. If Obama was born in Kenya and his mother (age 18 ) had not resided for the previous five years since the age of 16 in the U.S., then according to the legal exception to the constitutional mandate, he is not a citizen. But the real issue here is that BHO and his ilk do not care about the Constitution or the law. The BHO cult is all about the man. We believe Obama was born in the U.S., but are confounded by the fact that he does not authorize the release of his U.S. birth certificate, if there is one. And by the way, the "Certification of Live Birth" floating around on the Internet is not it.

"I am not very pleased with your lack of reader feed back on your new Web site. Let me know when it is back up and then I may return." --Olympia, Washington

THE LAST WORD

"Anyone who has ever run for office knows this: Running FOR an office is far, far different than serving IN an office if you win. ... During the recent campaign for President, candidate Obama pledged to close the prison at Guantanamo. The American Civil Liberties Union ran a full-page ad in the New York Times to remind one and all of that promise. In the accompanying press release the ACLU wrote: 'Obama, as a candidate, pledged to "close Guantanamo, reject the Military Commissions Act and adhere to the Geneva Conventions."' The ACLU, also called for President Obama to foreswear anything stronger than reduced potty breaks in interrogations, saying, 'The ACLU calls on President-elect Obama to sign Day One executive orders banning the use of torture and abuse.' In case you didn't think they were serious, the ACLU wrote: 'There is no room for patience or delay in these areas. We have to hold President-elect Obama's feet to the fire if we're going to turn hope into reality.' Let's take a moment to examine that phrase: 'Feet to the Fire.' In one sentence the ACLU's demands that unsavory techniques be banned from questioning suspected terrorists. In another, the ACLU urges putting the feet of the President of the United States into a flame to force him -- torture him, if necessary -- to do what they want. Interesting, huh!?" --political analyst Rich Galen
