Independent Institute Launches Second Amendment Book Bomb

by Staff
December 19, 2008

OAKLAND, Calif., (christiansunite.com) -- Monday, December 15, marked America's Bill of Rights Day, the anniversary of the ratification of the Bill of Rights of the U.S. Constitution. To commemorate this event, the Independent Institute is launching the Second Amendment Book Bomb in an effort to move constitutional rights to the top of national book bestseller lists and communicate the importance of the Second Amendment in the protection of liberty.

A historic victory was won for the Second Amendment in June when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in the landmark case of District of Columbia v. Heller that the Second Amendment protects an individual right to own and bear arms. However, the ruling in Heller was immediately attacked and efforts to undermine gun rights continue on a national level and across the country.

In The Founders' Second Amendment: Origins of the Right to Bear Arms, Second Amendment scholar and attorney, Independent Institute Research Fellow Dr. Stephen P. Halbrook, who represented more than 300 members of Congress in Heller, captures the intent of the Founders in their own words from newspapers, correspondence, and political debates and also draws on archival sources revealed for the first time ever. By placing historical events and their modern- day applications in context, Halbrook reveals how the meaning of the Second Amendment is hard to misinterpret.

More than 200 years later, the Supreme Court made it clear this summer that the Second Amendment is as essential to the Bill of Rights as is the First Amendment's defense of freedom of speech and religion.

In order to secure the Second Amendment now and for the future, it is essential that the American public understands the reasons why the Founders sought to protect this right and The Founders' Second Amendment is exactly the tool to do so.
