Ron Paul: Highways Claim More Than 9/11 Killed

Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul contends that the federal government has overreacted by limiting personal freedom in the wake of terrorist attacks six years ago, noting more people die on U.S. highways in less than a month’s time compared to the number who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.

“We have been told that we have to give up our freedoms in order to be safe because terrorism is such a horrible event,” Paul said today to more than 1,000 supporters who attended a rally at a downtown Chicago hotel ballroom.

“A lot fewer lives died on 9/11 than they do in less than a month on our highways, but once again, who owns the highways? Do we own the highways? No. It’s a government institution you know. …We need to put all this in perspective.”

More than 2,970 people were reported dead in the terrorist attacks in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania. Federal highway traffic statistics show an average of 3,509 people a month were killed on the nation’s highways in 2001.

Comparing car accidents to mass-murdering terrorists. Ron Paul really gets it. A candidate of credibility for sure.

Brother,

I've tried to listen to Ron Paul several times, and it's like listening to a lunatic. To say that he's an odd bird is an understatement.

He would be dangerous if anyone gave him more fatality numbers. As an example: should we wait until terrorists kill as many as cancer before we wake up and defend ourselves? Accidents and illnesses are horrible, and they do kill people, but they shouldn't be compared to intentional acts of terrorists! Maybe we should just wait until the terrorists start killing people in the millions!  NOT!

If we don't defend ourselves, the terrorists WILL be killing people in the millions because that's exactly what they want to do. It would be insane to sit back and do nothing while huge numbers of innocent people are killed. I think that Mr. Paul needs to be safely tucked away in a rubber room somewhere so that he can't hurt himself.

There is a huge difference between the two.

Highway death are usually because of people being drunk or careless, or because the car had sudden problems such as flat tire or breaks. Even bad timing of a heart attack.

September 11, 2001 was a planned action of hate.

How dare he compare the two!

Oh he dare.

Anyone remember Ross Perot and how people thought he was crazy?  Paul will have it even worse...with some of the same looks.

Ron Paul is much more radical in his ways so I agree he will have it much worse.
