Democrats suffer another blow in anti-war efforts

CAPITOL HILL- Congressional Democrats have suffered another blow in their efforts to challenge President Bush's Iraq war policies.

A proposal by Virginia Senator Jim Webb to give troops as much time at home as they spend deployed in Iraq or Afghanistan fell four votes short of the 60 needed to advance. The Webb bill was thought to have the best chance of a number of anti-war measure because of its pro-military premise.

Arizona Senator John McCain helped lead the opposition. He argued that troop deployments aren't up to Congress, saying the U.S. has only one commander-in-chief.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid charges the defeat shows that Republicans, quote, "have once again demonstrated that they are more committed to protecting the president than protecting our troops."

Hmmm....no I would read that as Republicans are more committed to keeping the integrity of the Constitution in place.
