 Israeli warplanes violate Lebanese airspace
2007-09-18 22:33:52

BEIRUT, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- Israeli warplanes on Tuesday violated Lebanese airspace in mock attacks over several South Lebanon areas, Lebanese police said.

Six Israeli warplanes violated Lebanese airspace from 10am (0700 GMT) and made low-altitude passes over the southern port cities of Sidon and Tyre where they caused sonic booms, police said.

They also over-flew the Bint Jbeil region, a stronghold of the Hezbollah militant group, local Yalibnan news website reported.

Israel has continued to carry out flights over Lebanese territory despite the UN-brokered ceasefire on August 14, 2006, which halted a 34-day war between Israel and Hezbollah.

UN Resolution 1701 called for the disarming of all militias in Lebanon, the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the south of the country, and the deployment of a beefed-up UN peacekeeping force.

Israel has repeatedly said that the Jewish country would continue its controversial flights over Lebanon, saying they were needed to stem alleged arms smuggling to Hezbollah.
