Master and Commander is a prime example of showing how a movie doesn't need a lot of action and pretty explosions to make it good. Russell Crowe does a superb job playing the vengeful captain of the Surprise, which is huting down the superior French frigate after a pre-emptive surprise attack against them. Sandwiched between the explosive beggining and similar end, is shown the lives of the crew aboard a war galley in the 19th century.

Whoever enjoys good filmaking needs to see this movie, especially if you like movies such as Braveheart, Gladiator (and not just because of Russell Crowe), or Pirates of the Carribean.

4 out of 4 stars.

funny that you mentioned "Pirates of the Caribbean", me and my friends refer to "Master and Commander" as a serious version of POTC, without Johnny Depp in eyeliner (*sigh*)
anyway, I'm not usually a fan of big battle movies like MaC, but I enjoyed it, for what it was.  it got a bit gory for me at times (all those surgeries!), but I thought the movie was very well done.

Yeah, it was a GREAT movie. A friend of mine didn't like it because htey didn't board ships enough. Finally, someone grew a pair and decided to do something other then a mindless action! It was a great movie. A must see.
