ACRU plans to file briefs in favor of communities' attempts to curtail illegal aliens
A conservative alternative to the ACLU says it intends to file briefs in favor of two communities where federal judges struck ordinances designed to protect residents from illegal immigrants.
The American Civil Rights Union (ACRU) believes Hazleton, Pennsylvania, and Farmers Branch, Texas, both passed solid ordinances aimed at curtailing actions of illegal aliens. John Armor, legal counsel to the ACRU, says federal judges should not be able to usurp the will of local communities.
"You have elected representatives who reach the public decisions for you -- and if you don't like them, you can fire them in the next election," says the attorney. In contrast, he points out that federal judges are not elected and serve for life. "So they shouldn't lay a finger on a public issue that concerns the safety and welfare of the citizens of a town. It's as simple as that," explains Armor.
Armor believes both appeals will eventually wind up at the Supreme Court. He believes they will take the Hazelton and Farmers Branch cases simultaneously as they are working their way through different circuit courts at the same time.
"It's the kind of issue which I don't think the Supreme Court can safely duck," he remarks. "It's much too important, and it affects too many state as well as cities, of course. It's not just city laws, it's state laws -- and at some point the Supreme Court is going to have to rule on this," says the ACRU legal counsel.
Armor believes because these judges ruled in favor of the ACLU instead of local residents, there will be more rapes, robberies, assaults, and murders of citizens by illegal aliens. However, he is cautiously optimistic that the Supreme Court will overturn those rulings.
