Author says GOP finished; contemplating third-party presidential run himself

An author and investigative journalist believes President Bush's support of amnesty for illegal immigrants and desire to create a "North American Union" has basically destroyed the Republican Party. As a fallout of that, Dr. Jerome Corsi believes many conservatives are unhappy with the GOP – possibly opening the door for a successful third-party presidential run.

Corsi believes the United States is currently experiencing a fundamental realignment of politics that the nation’s citizens are only barely aware of because they are right in the middle of it.

"The only other time I can think of in American politics where similar fundamental realignment went on was just before the Civil War, when the Whig Party was destroyed," Corsi shares. "And George W. Bush has managed virtually to take the final steps, I think, to bring about the destruction of the Republican Party."

The conservative journalist says a "major groundswell" that he believes is beginning to take place makes him believe the time might be ripe for the emergence of a successful third party, capable of winning the White House. Members of the Constitution Party from "all over the country," he shares, have actually approached him about running as their candidate -- and he says he is considering it.

"There's a lot of anger right now. I think that it's time for a third party," he states. "I, myself, have been approached by the National Veterans Coalition, the Constitution Party. They would like me to run for their presidential candidate."

But Corsi says he would not do it for any other reason than to win. "My analysis is that this is one year, one time, when a third-party candidate could emerge as the winner -- and I would not undertake to even consider it if I thought it was just going to be an interesting ride, but not successful," he says. "I think a third party can, and may, just win."

And why would this election cycle cause him to expect that? "I can see strong possibilities that the conservatives are going to tell the Republican Party that they are either going to sit it out or they're going elsewhere," Corsi predicts. "I think the Republican Party may be at an end."
