6 held on terror conspiracy charges in N.J.
Ethnic Albanians allegedly plotted to attack Fort Dix military base

Six men from the former Yugoslavia were arrested on charges they plotted to attack the Fort Dix Army base and “kill as many soldiers as possible,” federal authorities said Tuesday.

The suspects were described as “Islamic radicals,” said U.S. Attorney’s Office spokesman Greg Reinert.

They were scheduled to appear in U.S. District Court in Camden later Tuesday to face charges of conspiracy to kill U.S. servicemen, said Michael Drewniak, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in New Jersey. Five of them lived in Cherry Hill, he said.

“They were planning an attack on Fort Dix in which they would kill as many soldiers as possible,” Drewniak said.

A law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity because documents in the case remain sealed, said the attack was stopped in the planning stages.

Authorities believe the men trained in the Poconos for the attack and also conducted surveillance at other area military institutions, including Fort Monmouth, the official said. The official said that the men had lived in the United States for some time.

The six were arrested trying to buy automatic weapons in a sale set up by law enforcement authorities, the official said.

State Police Capt. Al Della Fave said Tuesday that the investigation had been in the works for about a year. The arrests were first reported by WNBC's Jonathan Dienst. WNBC is the flagship NBC television station for the New York tri-state area.

Fort Dix, which is run in part by the U.S. Army, is a reserve training center but active units also take part in training at the base, some of which is focused on counter-terrorism. It also housed refugees from Kosovo in 1999.

No attack imminent
Investigators told NBC News’ Pete Williams that the plot was in the planning stages but no attack was imminent.

Acting on a tip, and with the help of an informant, the men were placed under surveillance.  Investigators said some of the group's members -- all men and all believed to be Islamic radicals -- went to the Poconos over the past several months to practice firing guns.

The official said that the men had lived in the United States for some time and were arrested as part of a joint federal and local investigation.

The Star-Ledger of Newark reported on its Web site that the men had agreed to buy AK-47 assault rifles from an arms dealer who was secretly cooperating with the FBI. It cited a law enforcement person who spoke on condition of anonymity because the source was not authorized to speak about the arrests.

Intelligence officials told NBC's Robert Windrem that they do not believe the plot was directed by al-Qaida because it did not match the key al-Qaida tenet: spectacular multiple simultaneous attacks.

However, the idea that the men were using al-Qaida training films and following al-Qaida goals shows that there is a large number of people who can create such plots inspired by the terrorist organization, the officials said.

FBI spokeswoman Jerri Williams said U.S. Attorney Christopher Christie and J.P. Weis, FBI special agent in charge in Philadelphia, planned a news conference later Tuesday to discuss the arrests.

Plotter Calls Planned Ft. Dix Massacre 'Service of Allah'...

Heavily armed terrorists wanted to storm a US military base and kill as many soldiers as they could. And for a while, they had Dover Air Force Base in the cross hairs. But luckily, the FBI says it was able to break up the plot before anything happened.

Early Tuesday morning, the FBI raided a home in southwestern New Jersey. Agents arrested 6 men. They say they were part of a home grown, al-Qaeda inspired terror cell, and wanted to kill US soldiers.

Chris Christie, the US Attorney, says, "my intent was to hit a heavy concentration of American soldiers, at the same time, he said on tape that he was prepared to die in service of Allah."

Federal prosecutors say the men chose Fort Dix because one of the suspects delivered pizzas to the base and "knew it like the back of his hand."

Col. Damien Johnson of Fort Dix says, "soldiers are targets everywhere. No, it doesn't make me anxious."

Before deciding on Fort Dix, agents say the suspects considered several sites, including Dover Air Force Base, home to some 3,500 airmen and women.

Master Sgt. Steven Marciniak of DAFB says, "we always have security measures in place to deal with situations that could come up and it is our goal to ensure that the people who live and work at Dover Air Force Base do so in the safest environment that we can provide."

For now, the suspects are charged with conspiring to kill US servicemen. And prosecutors say the US military dodged a bullet.

Prosecutors say the suspects had footage of themselves firing weapons. They wanted it put on DVD. So they took it to a store, and the store clerk contacted police. They say that's how the whole plot unraveled.

Thank God for the store clerk who alerted the police!!  I heard about this and also read a news article on it.  We really need to be aware.

Praise God their plans were thwarted.  Unfortunately, this is only one group of many who are illegally in this country with evil intentions.  Even this will not convince our government to secure our borders.

Even more of a problem is "home grown" terror cells....where they have been raised in the USA and get drawn into the terrorist mindsets.  Remember the Caucasian man from So. California who joined Al Qaeda and does those video tapes now and then threatening us?

This is why in my small way, I try to help those ministering to Muslims (besides wanting them to know the peace and forgiveness of God through Christ).....if they come to know Christ as their Savior and His love for others, they won't be trying to kill us.
