Taxpayer funds dry up for Planned Parenthood in MO

A pro-life group is applauding Missouri's governor for ending the flow of taxpayer dollars to Planned Parenthood abortion clinics.

For the past several years, low-income women in need of screenings for breast and cervical cancer were directed to Planned Parenthood clinics in Springfield and Joplin. However, Governor Matt Blunt has eliminated the funding streams to abortion providers and has redirected the funding for cancer screenings to other medical facilities.

Daniel McConchie, the Missouri representative of Americans United for Life, says it is not an easy task to uncover such funding.

"They're still on the look-out trying to find other areas [of funding], but as [Gov. Blunt's] chief of staff told me, he said it's like trying to find a needle in a haystack whenever you're searching for this stuff," he says, "because oftentimes you'll have bureaucrats working in state government who are interested in protecting some of these entities just out of their own personal, political interests."

McConchie encourages pro-life governors in other states to make sure that tax dollars are not going to abortion mills.

"Well, it's very important that good, pro-life state governors do what they can to examine their own administration -- not just trust anything that maybe the bureaucrats under them are telling them, but have somebody go through and look where's the money going, who is it going to, to verify and ensure that the proper recipient should be getting it," McConchie says.

It's about time. We need more government officials to wake up and take similar action. Not only is abortion wrong in the first place but it has been proven that increases the risk of cancer in women. A fact that groups such as Planned Parenthood refuses to accept and refuses to advise it's clients on this and other risks to women having an abortion.

I agree.  It would be great to see more gment official actively look for misappropriated funds and things of that nature.

The funds shouldn't have been allocated to Planned Parenthood in the first place.  Low income women in need of screening should have been sent to hospitals and clinics.  It sounds like a smoke screen to me.
