Frozen U.S. Midwest Under Blizzard Warning
A northern swath of the U.S. Midwest already in a deep freeze was placed under a blizzard warning Tuesday by the National Weather Service.
An area south of Chicago was warned to expect up to 10 inches of snow by late morning and wind gusts of up to 40 mph. Metropolitan Chicago remained under a winter storm warning, and the city's Department of Aviation said more than 400 flights had been canceled at O'Hare International Airport, the Chicago Tribune reported. Midway Airport reported about 100 flight cancellations.
In Illinois, the Bloomington Pantograph said the city was also under a blizzard warning, and said once the storm passes, forecasters expect the temperatures to drop sharply, with wind chills reaching as low as 18 degrees below zero Fahrenheit.
Forecasters said a foot or more of snow is expected in central Indiana.
The Des Moines (Iowa) Register quoted forecasters as saying snowfall amounts will range from 4 to 6 inches from Interstate 80 to the Missouri border.
