Sen. Johnson's health status upgraded to 'fair'
Brain surgery prompted speculation Democrat majority could be in jeopardy

The condition of Sen. Tim Johnson -- whose emergency hospitalization last month prompted speculation the Democratic majority in the Senate could be in jeopardy -- has been upgraded from "critical" to "fair," a sign the South Dakota Democrat is recovering from brain surgery.

"I can confirm that he has been upgraded from critical to fair condition," Johnson aide Julianne Fisher said on Tuesday in an e-mail message.

Democrats hold a narrow 51-49 majority in Senate. If Johnson had to leave Congress, South Dakota's Republican governor would likely appoint a Republican to finish the last two years of his term. That would make for an evenly split chamber, with Vice President Dick Cheney able to cast tie-breaking votes in his role as president of the Senate.

Johnson could be out for months but still holds his seat. A Senate seat becomes vacant through death or resignation.

According to George Washington University Hospital, where Johnson was admitted on December 13 following a brain hemorrhage, a health status of "fair" means that vital signs like blood pressure and temperature are stable and within normal limits.

His previous health status indicated that vital signs were unstable and outside normal limits.

Doctors at the hospital performed emergency surgery to stop a brain hemorrhage caused by malformed blood vessels.

He was kept under sedation following surgery, and placed on a ventilator after fluid developed in his lungs as a result of the hemorrhage.

A Conservative Christian's Conundrum

Fifty year old Tim Johnson, D, SD, is in critical condition in hospital unable to talk or walk.  He is able to send messages to his wife by pressing her hand.  Stricken with a stroke he is not sitting with his newly won Democratic Congress in Washington, DC.

His Republican Governor will replace him, at his demise, with a Republican, thereby putting the Congress into the Republican's hands for the next 20 months.

Federal judgeship appointments, Supreme Court replacements and all Congressional committee chairmen will revert to the Republican parties influence in an instant.

Our compassion and prayers go out to him and his family.

Should our political intentions become paramount when it comes to prayer for our government?

How should we pray, Brothers and sisters?

Heed the words of Jesus:

"Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.  John 5:24  NKJV

Amen doc. Politics should not have an effect in such things. Our prayers should be with him and his family.
