Storm threatens biggest Dec. 1 snow since 1978

The Chicago area, which has just closed the books on an unseasonable six-day spell of 60s, now appears threatened by one of its biggest early season snowstorms since the infamous winter of 1978-79. That's the season which began with a 7.8" snow December 1 and concluded the area's heaviest total ever-89.3".

As with any complex winter storm--especially the first major snow producer of the season--track adjustments could shift the axis of heaviest snowfall. But, Chicago appears near the zone of this system's most intense meteorological action Thursday night through much of Friday morning. Thursday's rainy spells mix with ice pellets and some snow at times as the air here continues to cool. But, its overnight snow turns heavy over all but eastern sections of the area. Though Streets and Sanitation reports road surfaces between 48-54 (degrees), snow intensity should permit accumulation.

______________

My own area is expecting up to 14 inches of accumulated snow in the next 24 hours. We haven't had that much here in a very long time.

Brother, I am praying for you and the entire state you live in where all this snow is expected. Having been raised in NJ and having lived there during the blizzard of 78, I know that power can go out and stay out for a good while. It is hard for trucks to get thru and replenish the stores and supermarkets, and many people end up stranded in various places. I have been living in Florida for 16 years and I must tell you, I was excited that we got a few snowflakes about a week ago, but I was equally as glad that there was no snow accumulation. Thank God for that.

Thank you, sister.

They are now saying 14 to 16 inches of snow for this area in the next 24 hrs on top of a layer of ice that we already have. It's 26 degrees right now with a wind chill of 17. Compared to what we had just yesterday that is really cold. This time yesterday it was already 60 degrees.

This has been a very strange day here for us. The schools are closed and we are iced in. We even had a very strange thunder-ice-storm about an hour ago. I don't think that I remember anything quite like it. The streets are a solid sheet of ice, and it's still coming down.

I remember some thunder ice and snow storms but it has been quite a long while ago. Back in the 60's if I remember right. The schools here don't seem to be closed yet at least not here in the city. Some of the smaller towns around here may have done so. If the weather looks like it's going to be bad the schools here usually send the country kids home first because the country roads get worse a lot quicker and don't get taken care of by the government quite as quick.

I wonder where global warming is?   Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

I will be praying for everyone who has to be out in the snow and ice.  Be safe!!  I am having ice and snow here myself but I don't have to go out side though.
