Manila - Philippine authorities on Sunday raised the alert against possible floods and landslides as typhoon Cimaron bore down on a large portion of the country.

Cimaron was expected to make landfall in the evening in the northern province of Isabela, the weather bureau said.

It has maximum sustained winds of 175 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 210 kilometres per hour.

The weather bureau said Cimaron 'has gained more strength' as it moved west north-west at 15 kilometres per hour.

Storm warnings have been raised in more than 20 provinces in the northern, central and eastern Philippines, the bureau added.

'Residents in areas under storm warning signals are alerted against possible flashfloods and landslides,' a weather bureau bulletin said.

'Residents along the eastern coast are advised to be alert against storm surge or big waves generated by the storm,' it added.

In late September, almost the same portion of the Philippines, including Manila, was devastated by Typhoon Xangsane, which killed at least 219 people.

Xangsane, the worst typhoon to hit Manila in a decade, caused massive power outages, landslides, floods and other accidents as it toppled trees and other infrastructure.

It destroyed an estimated 26.6 million dollars worth of crops and infrastructure, including more than 200,000 houses, according to disaster relief officials.

Threat of more floods if Typhoon Cimaron hits Thailand

BANGKOK, Oct 29 (TNA) – Senior officials of the Royal Irrigation Department (RID) and related government agencies were scheduled to meet Sunday and assess the current flooding situation in the country as well as floods which could worsen with the approach of Typhoon Cimaron early next month.

RID Director-General Samart Chokkanapitak said irrigation officials had been instructed to closely monitor water levels in reservoirs which now are at over 80 per cent capacity in preparation for heavy rains which could come hand-in-hand with the approaching tropical storm.

Typhoon Cimaron is reportedly forming now in the Pacific near the Philippines and expected to reach the Vietnamese coast on November 1.

The typhoon will possibly impact Thailand afterwards, said Samart.

According to Mr. Samart, if Typhoon Cimaron moves to the North, major water retention sites in the region such as the Bhumibol Dam in Tak province and the Sirikit Dam in Uttaradit may have to release water within the next few days because they have already reached their maximum level. The water, if released, will further worsen flooding situation in central Thailand.

Meanwhile, Suparerk Tansriratanawong, Director-General of the Meteorological Department, said it was still difficult to predict the strength of the new typhoon and more accurate forecasts can only be made after the storm hits the Philippines.

Hi Al. This one is expected to hit the northern province of Isabela the same area that was hit by Typhoon Xangsane in late September. Is that the same one that hit your family?

I will be praying for them also.
